It's your typical bowling alley. We've all been to one before. I've been here once and it looked like any other one i've been too. There's an arcade, a bar with food, and lanes of course. I think there is laser tag too. Everything is in nice condition. The patrons were very friendly and made nice conversation with me. They invited me to join their league which sounded interesting and fun. The bar is Poor Richards pub from The Office. It's nice for a bowling alley bar. Better than most. They had some good loaded fries, and a cool Office themed drink too. read more

The cooks were super rude. We ordered and we kept getting looks from them because we ordered food. The Lena lady kept giving us an attitude every time we wanted to order and the coke doesn't even taste like coke. The front desk ladies were great but don't come here for the food! South Side bowl is great. They are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The prices are reasonable (cheap, really), the bar (Pour Richard's) is more than adequate, and the snack bar is THE BOMB! Best cheesesteak, best BLT, great burger...no lying, it is shockingly good and affordable. Every now and again the lanes are unevenly oiled, but I think that had more to do with the amount of bowlers on any given day on that lane. We go a few times a week. I love that they are open 24 hours. Which is great since I work nights and I go after work. The snack bar does have great food just the pizza tastes like high school pizza. And the staff at snack bar are so laid back it does take awhile to give your order or get the food. The same goes for the bar. So slow. read more

In an early scene in the Farrelly brother's overlooked classic, "Kingpin", Roy Munson (played by Woody Harrelson) wakes up in a run down flophouse in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is hungover, dirty, disheveled, and maimed; a past his prime former prodigy derailed by fate- in short, he is a human embodiment of Scranton- he is it's perfect hero, and Southside Bowl is it's perfect bowling joint. Like Scranton itself, the Southside Bowl is loved because of, not in spite of, it's flaws. It is the best place to bowl in Scranton, and not just because there are no other bowling lanes in Scranton. Southside Bowl is the only place in town that features "cosmic bowling" on the weekend: a frenzied, black light lit, saturnalian romp- when the lanes are alight with swirling psychedelic colors emanating from every object- when wild tribes of feral children run around screaming as Hanna Montana blares from the jukebox, while their parents get ossified on cheap beer from Poor Richard's pub (the Lane's in-house watering hole.) Cosmic Bowling night is a trip; it feels like the present time having a foursome with 1981, 1967 and Satan. Warning to epileptics: Cosmic Bowling night may trigger seizures. If that sounds like too much excitement, you'll find weekday nights much quieter, and the place is practically empty during the daytime. If you tire of bowling, you will find other activities to keep you occupied. Along with Poor Richard's pub, there is a pool room of about a dozen full size tables and a small arcade. The poorly maintained pool tables, have surfaces littered with cigarette ashes, chipped paint, and food particles, which add to the fun and challenge of the game. In between shots, you can take time to admire some of the most brilliantly horrible pool-themed paintings ever rendered on canvas. All in all, it is a very special, very ordinary place. I like South Side Bowl! It's an ideal location for a bowling alley, just off of Washington really close to downtown. And it's a big bowling alley with solid food options and reasonable prices. You also have Poor Richards attached so that's an added bonus for a little beer to quench your thurst once you finish destroying your friends in a great game of bowling. I WAS DISAPPOINTED I asked for a six pound ball for myself (I am ten and I'm small for my age) they said I should be using an eight pound ball. I go back to my seat carrying an eight pound ball I could barely carry.I was crying at my seat.My dad goes back to the counter and asked for a six pound ball.The guy looked at me and said,"how about a seven,"my dad asked for his money and we left.Never going back there again.$26 games+$10 drinks+$10 pizza x 12 per year=$558 a year lost over one pound read more

THis place as the most unprofessional staff that exists. I went here with my Nephew and Family and a Staff Member by the name of "Emma" constantly harrased us, making sure we didnt bowl more than we were supposed to. She made us feel like leaving without a refund, just so I didnt have to deal with it again. I dont understand her picking on us, it was only 3adults and a 7 year old kid, no need for the harrasment. ANd to top it all off, she ept acting like she knew it all, by correcting every single thing I said, speaking over me. Never will I return. Which is a shame cause I spent ridiculous amount of money on summer passes to bowl there atleast 3 times a week. read more

Not a good experience at all. They have a policy of not allowing bumpers for ages 8 and under, which is totally understandable considering the neighborhood and the 24/7 atmosphere. However, since this policy was not posted anywhere, we did not know about it, and had already purchased two games and shoe rentals for myself and my 5 children and entered everyone's names into the computer before we saw that there wasn't an option for bumpers. Once we were informed of the policy, I asked if we could get some of our money refunded because 3 of my 5 boys have autism and were getting quite agitated with all the gutter balls they were getting. I was willing to pay for one of the two games, even though the boys were so upset I didn't think they would be able to finish one. The woman at the desk was quite rude. Once she heard me say the word "autism" she loudly announced "You didn't tell me they had SPECIAL NEEDS! They don't look like they do!" Then she proceeded to march over to the lane and walk in front of the kids... while they were bowling... and still she carried on about how she was "sensitive" to kids with special needs because she had grandchildren in wheelchairs". How about you not embarrass my kids!! We were mortified with how this woman carried on. We will NEVER step foot in this place again. We bowl quite often at their sister site, Idle Hour Lanes, with never an issue with bumpers or anything, and thought since they were owned by the same people it would be a similarly awesome experience. How wrong we were!! That woman single handedly ruined my day out with my kids by embarrassing us all. Shame on South Side Bowl. read more
