I have seen stories about Ignite Neon Sign museum, but didn't know where it was. Today I left the new Trader Joes off Broadway and drove by. I stopped and took a look see with my husband. It's currently closed due to a fire ( a big banner posted at the entrance says this ). I am looking forward to coming back once they reopen to see the inside. 106 degrees - wanted to do something indoors since we couldn't go hiking. It's a really cool place to learn about the history of neon lights. A lot of the items around are from the 50s to the 70s. It bought back a lot of childhood nostalgic memories for me. The scavenger hunt was the best part. My son found all of them and I found none. Lol. Once you are ready to venture outside, make sure to grab an umbrella by the door so you can shield yourself from the dangerous dry heat. Even with the umbrella I was dying. I went back inside one shade darker. Don't forget to visit the gift shop. I always collect magnets wherever I travel, happy that I finally found a Tucson magnet that I liked. I finally made it to Ignite and was so excited to find such a fun blast to the past right in the middle of town. The neon demonstration was very cool and I loved taking a tour of Tucson's history through some of its iconic signs. It was fun to reminisce about lost favorites like the Grill and Bedroxx, and discover some businesses I never knew about. This is a great place to escape the summer heat or take out of town guests. I found this museum listed under "Iconic Places" in Tucson while searching the Google Maps app on my visit. I'm happy I did, too, since one of the friends I was visiting didn't know it existed! If you're a fan of neon, hand-painted signs or old memorabilia of the days gone by, this museum is a lovely little collection of just that. They've done a great job of taking you through history, and they have a scavenger hunt if you're into that, too. I admittedly gave up and wanted to admire the artistry of it all. There was also a neon-bending workshop happening on the weekend I stopped by. So, if you're local to the area, look into that. The gift shop was surprisingly filled with all kinds of things: Ignite merch, magnets, postcards, jewelry, random (single) letters for decor, and whatever knickknacks for your friends and family back home. The bonus was that the owner had neon pieces for purchase! I would've gotten one if I weren't on a road trip since it's such a unique souvenir. read more

I'll cut to the chase. If I could give this place 6 stars I would. Go and support a local business and learn about Tucson history at the same time. Ignite just hit its 5th year anniversary and I hope to see it around for at least twice as long. The museum was started by Jude Cook, whose career has been around signs for at least 40 years. He started restoring Tucson none signs 9 years ago. I got to meet Jude and his partner on a Friday afternoon. Jude gave me tips about neon signs to see around town. His partner actually gave me a private tour as I showed great interest in the signs. I learned so much from these two but also the signs in the museum. Also, there is much more to this place than the signs. There is an old retro TV and juke boxes and a small diner setup, a small gas station setup, etc. Tip#1: Prepare to spend at least 2-3 hours here if you want to read all the signs , as questions, watch the demo, and take pictures. At least one of the signs is interactive too. Tip#2: check out the website and come on a day they are doing a neon glass bending demo. Learn about how it's done, how they get the Neon or Argon gas into it, how they get the different colors, and the equipment used to do the work. Tip#3: sign up on their mailing list for special events. I heard they might actually turn on some of the signs in the evening for an event. Tip#4: Do not skip the gift shop. See works of art made in the museum that you can purchase, buy letters and numbers that came from signs, get Tshirts that have a story behind them, and much more. I can't believe I've lived in Tucson for 14 years and never been here before. What a secret gem, nestled into the south side of Tucson just past 2nd and 4th. Good off-street parking, excellent value at $10 for us cotton-topped seniors. We spent almost 2 hours here just wandering around and gawking, taking picture, etc. Do NOT miss the video on how neon signs are made, it makes the exhibit of neon-making gear right behind it much more meaningful. We'll be back when we have the right visitors come to town that enjoy this kind of Americana. read more

A gem of a museum, very quaint and full of local history. Lots of cool neon signs and memorabilia. Lovers of retro and vintage will love this place. The staff is super-nice, and there is a little scavenger hunt game you can play while there if you feel like it. Tons of free stree parking around. Cute smaller museum. There's a lot of neon signs and tons to read about them. They have a few interactive activities which is nice. They have a short video on an iPad but it would be nice if they put it on a TV and with a few chairs so people can sit down. There's a lot of reading so that would give people a break from reading. They also do private events. This would be such a unique venue to have a private event at! read more

It was great learning about local and other collected/donated signs. The owner was really nice & shared his stories about his collection. My older daughters had a fun time (and helped keep them focused) doing the sign scavenger hunt. There was also a glass bending demonstration on the day we visited (Friday after Thanksgiving). For $12 you get to check out this museum dedicated to signs, mostly neon, from Tucson and sometimes beyond. Most signs have some information about them posted so you can navigate the place yourself and take your time. They also have some interactive stations for kids and adults alike. Most signs are in the warehouse section lit up. Also on the warehouse section is a giant lite brite board you can play with. They also have a few larger signs outside in the back for you to see. It's no Vegas neon sign graveyard but it's a cool collection with some local history and very nice people working. It's definitely worth a visit if you want to learn something new or get some history. Signs can actually be pretty fascinating. There is also a small gift shop at the end with some local goods and art. We were both glad we visited! read more

If you love old neon signs - I certainly do - then this is a place worth visiting in Tucson. It'll only take you about an hour to go through the collection, including watching the film that provides background about how neon signs are made (which is well worth viewing). If you have a bit more time, I would recommend doing the scavenger hunt, which will get you (or your kids) to pay more attention to what you're seeing. My favorite part of the museum is out back where several signs are in a yard in various conditions and states, some of which perhaps are in process of being restored. read more

What a unique place. I was walking in this neighbor killing time and came upon the museum. Admission was not expensive so I decided to check it out. Great vintage sign, lots of neon and a demo on creating the glass for the neon signs. I even got a sample of the glass to take home. The employee are very nice, they have a scavenger hunt to get you more involved and some additional signs out back. This is for sure one of these odd ball places you need to experience for your self. Ignite Sign Museum is a hidden gem, while we were there we saw a few small scale and full size neon signs. Learned the history of some iconic signs around town and saw sign restoration in progress with hand painting. This is a wonderful Tucson experience and hope this exhibit only grows. The staff stopped to talk to us as we were in the gift shop and we learned even more about the history from them, absolutely talk to their team and learn all you can. the ignite sign art museum was such a unique and fun experience! they have a huge amount of all different kinds of signs, including quite a few mini replications of iconic tucson neon. they also had a really great scavenger hunt that made it really interesting to go through the museum, and it was just the right amount of hard. it's easy to get sensory overload in a place like this, but because of the scavenger hunt i feel like i saw every single sign in the place! they also had quite a few other activities you could choose to participate with while going through, which made it feel like a choose your adventure experience. long story short, i had a great time here and can't wait to bring friends and family to see this tucson treasure! read more

Ignite Sign Art Museum is a collection of not only signs, but a lot of other mid-century artifacts as well. Most of the signs are from around Tucson, so longtime locals will see some familiar icons, but nostalgia is not a prerequisite for enjoyment! They have different scavenger hunts going at different times--we had a blast obsessively hunting for ampersands (&) for Ampersand Awareness Week. This museum is a good activity that can be done in a couple of hours, tops, so if you're visiting you can schedule this with other Tucson sights. read more
