Love this place. We go a couple times a year and this visit was exceptional as we had the opportunity to see most of the wildlife. Really enjoyed seeing Strawberry the Bear, the wolves, coyotes, fox, coati, bobcat, otter, and new mountain lions. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Tucson!

This is an amazing museum! If you visit Tucson, do NOT miss this museum and allow half a day. There's tons of activities for kids, but our group of adults had a fabulous time and learned a lot. I didn't love the reptile house. But snakes really freak me out. It was cool to see them, but not my personal favorite. They had docents stationed around with things to show you. For example, someone was holding a raptor on the way in and teaching everyone about him. Another docent introduced us to a 34 year old parrot named Dreama who loves men with beards. Another docent taught us all about Saguaros and showed us what a birds nest looks like, along with the seeds the Saguaros produce and what the ribs look like. There's a section on caves where you go inside and let your eyes adjust to light- this portion reminded me of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. There's even a narrow cave path you can follow, which is fun until someone starts feeling claustrophobic (me, I am someone). It was cool and fun down there. There's tons of animals to see too- javelinas, big horned sheep, otters, beavers, wolves, sting rays, an more. The big horned goats were especially perky and demonstrative. We enjoyed the labyrinth, the hummingbird house, the pollinator garden, the cactus garden, and so much more. Highly recommend this museum!

The Tucson Desert Museum is a cool mix of botanical garden and zoo right in the Arizona desert. The landscapes with all the cacti and native plants are really pretty. I liked seeing the North American beaver in its habitat. Theyve also got javelinas, coyotes, mountain lions, and so much more Almost missed the aquarium on my way out but Im glad I caught it. Its tucked away and has some really interesting things there are such as the seahorse ... Dont skip it. It's right near the main entrance and it is indoors so great relief from the heat. Great spot overall, especially if you like the desert. Definitely worth it. 5 stars for sure

Spent a beautiful day out in the desert one morning while in the area. This desert museum is such a unique and evolving place. It had been close to 30 years since my last visit to this museum and it has grown into quite a facility in that time. You can easily spend hours here, or longer. There is a huge multi sectioned parking area that allows for ample parking though parts of it are a distance from the entry. With my military discount tickets were $25 bucks each. Regular admission is $30. We started at the front and wandered our way through the open park area and structures on it for over five hours. The hummingbird aviary is still one of my favorites. Just sitting quietly inside on one of the benches these tiny winged streaks of lightning will actually stop and visit with you if you are still enough and quite. Most people just walked through without enjoying the little birds. You have to sit and be still. We explored cactus gardens, underground caves and the different desert ecosystems built within the grounds. Saw raptors, snakes and mountain goats. Explored the numerous hidden areas within the compound that each held something unique to the area. Butterfly gardens, native flora and fauna, water features and trails to private spots. There are several independent animal houses that provided shelter and security for all the native species in the desert. This one of a kind museum is worth the time to drive out to and difinitely shows all the desert has to offer in nature. It can be crowded at times, as it was on the day of out holiday visit. But once inside the grounds you can create your own sanctuary by simply finding a selcuded spot and just sitting. There are docents everywhere throughout the park to answer questions, share information and answer questions about the museum and grounds. 4.5 Stars rounded up for the hummingbird sanctuary 01189

EXCELLENT EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE! My family and appreciated that everyone who visited The Desert Museum was excited to be there. I can tell the staff did an excellent job getting everyone excited and intrigued by the beauty around them! I know I certainly was, although I'm biased and love nature already haha. I didn't get a chance to spend too much time here as we arrived close to closing so I need to come back! However, they have many activities for the community and this would be a perfect place to bring families and friends!

Wow! The Avian Adventure experience at the Sonora Desert Museum was mind-blowing and better than we could have ever expected! Up close and personal with nature's most amazing and awe inspiring creatures, the interactive time spent with the stunning Great Horned Owls must be experienced to fully comprehend the wonder and awe that awaits you. Our guides, Amanda, Haley and Hannah were nothing short of fantastic and made the experience that much better. Super knowledgeable, friendly and outstanding educators. 10-star experience and 10-star guides.

This is my favorite museum I've ever been to!!! It's well worth the ticket price. It's not just a museum -- it's literally a museum, a zoo, an aquarium, an art exhibit, a botanic garden, a desert walking trail, and more. There's so much going on here and it's HUGE. You definitely need the map. I spent all day here until closing time, and I still didn't see every part of the museum. There's a lot of live activities like animal encounters at the Orientation, and they have a daily animal show in the theater. At the theater that day, I got to see a gila monster and 2 rattlesnakes! Super fun and educational. The art exhibit here is also beautiful and features art of the desert and wildlife. Outside, there's an amazing desert trail where I saw a squadron of javelinas! The javelinas are sooo cute. Apparently, you can see coyotes on this trail too but I didn't spot any. I also recommend the hummingbird aviary -- it's the first time I've been to an aviary featuring hummingbirds. There were many hummingbirds in there and it was a magical experience! They're so fast, it's hard to capture photos or videos, but I recommend just being in the moment and enjoying the presence of these wonderful birds. Arizona is snake country, so of course, LOTS OF BEAUTIFUL SNAKES in their reptile zoo. I loved seeing the milk snake, the king snake, the rattlesnakes, and more. I also did the stingray experience, which isn't included in the ticket but it was just $4 extra. I thought it was worth it to be able to pet the stingrays! Stingrays are beautiful creatures. Every zookeeper I met there was very knowledgable and kind. I also had lunch at the food court, and was impressed by the quality of the food. The quesadilla I had was yummy! And the guacamole tasted fresh.

Beautiful landscape of cactus and desert animals. The sheer size and colors of the cactus are just stunning. A great place to wander around and immerse yourself into a world of desert beauty. It's a full day of exploring!

Brilliant museum, the highlight of our Tucson trip. Loved how it has an aquarium, botanical garden, stingray bay (to feed & touch), views, hiking, a zoo, art gallery, and daily animal spotlight in its theatre with a zoo keeper. Also, has a gift shop, cafe, coffee shop, and restaurant all on site. Price point was worth it. We loved every minute.

We stopped here upon recommendation from local tourism guides. It was not entirely what was advertised. It was informative and had a lot of potential but did not live up to the hype as seen in advertisements. Definitely not worth the price paid for admission.

The Sonora Desert is like no place on earth. I hope my pictures capture the beauty and essence of this magnificent place. A MUST DO IN TUCSON.

One of our favorite spots we visited! In fact, we didn't give ourselves enough time to finish it before it closed. What a great way to learn about the desert landscape and creatures. Highly recommend this as a stopping point for your visit to Tucson.

I spent Thanksgiving at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and had an awesome experience! One fun perk of being in Tucson is finding activities that feel special even on holidays, and I loved that the museum is open 365 days a year. After navigating the scenic, winding drive up to the museum, we found plenty of parking and grabbed general admission tickets for $30 each, well worth the price for how much there is to explore. The map at the entrance lays out a super intuitive path, making it easy to wander through all the different sections without missing anything. Some highlights for me were the Earth Sciences area, where you can see a cool selection of minerals, and the Mountain Woodland and Desert Grassland habitats featuring grey wolves, bobcats, and their new barn owl. There's so much to see that time gets away from you in the best way, and we easily spent a few hours taking it all in. Overall, a fantastic experience and a great reminder that Tucson has so much natural beauty to share beyond the city limits. I'd definitely come back again and can see why locals recommend it to visitors year-round!

First as a child as a family outing with my siblings, parents, cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents, then as a parent taking my children. I am now looking forward to showing my grandchildren the wonders of actual experience, with actual animals, that are living and breathing. These are not AI, not CGI and not animated. They are real living breathing animals. The zoo is modest in size and easily explored within 3 hours or so. We even rode the Reid Park Express miniature train! The zoo features, many different birds, reptiles and mammals from around the world. There are multiple aviaries, and the large mammal enclosures include elephants, rhinoceros, grizzly bear, giraffes and many, many more animals than I can name. The caretakers have done an excellent job of managing the zoo over the years. It is clean and well maintained. The animal habitats are spacious and the animals are well cared for. The only reasons I did not give a five star rating, (and this is where partial stars would be nice Yelp!) is because the zoo is pretty small with a very small gift shop, and Reid Park itself is not nearly so well maintained as the zoo. I truly recommend the zoo for anybody seeking a reason to get the kids out of the house, or just to go on a date.
