Some people view IKEA as a mystical Scandinavian wonderland. Some people view it as an unholy pressboard hell. It is neither. What IKEA sets out to do is to provide low-cost, moderate quality, minimal home furnishings for those of us who 1) like the look 2) can't, or don't want to, shell out large amounts of money and 3) change tastes or homes so often, it's not worth buying the higher-end stuff (college students and young couples, I am looking at you). This location is much like the others around the country. In this case, the top floor is the model showroom and the bottom is the warehouse. If you have no need to traverse the whole showroom, there are shortcuts to skip whole sections; look at the provided store directory for help. The restaurant, where you can get reasonably priced wraps, salads, entrees, and dessert, is also on the second floor. There is also a little dining area on the ground floor near the checkout where you can buy hot dogs for $.50 and bottles, bags, and containers of food to take home. I recommend the Swedish meatballs and the cinnamon buns. A note on the quality of furniture: I find it depends on the piece and the person. I don't consider myself or my household gentle but I have a few IKEA pieces that are not only over seven years old, but have survived several moves, including one from NYC to FL, and still look fabulous. Overall, I give IKEA four stars for succeeding at it's goal. The last star is for it's catalog; If you like the clean, contemporary look or ever need to figure out how to stuff an entire apartment into 300 sq ft, the IKEA catalog is an amazing source of inspiration, even you end up buying your furnishings elsewhere. read more

OK furniture for an average price, which comes in a million pieces with missing pieces and wholes drilled in the wrong sizes. Ikea- I have a love/hate relationship with Ikea. Overall I'm a huge fan. Started my Sunday morning with "Oh man, I need to grab more closet-system shelves". Time to go to Ikea! BTW, only an insane person would go to Ikea on a Sunday and brave the 1/2 day trip, but I put on some shorts and a comfortable set of shoes and set out to the land of Sweden (and in this case, Ikea Tampa which is close to Ybor City). So, Ikea pro-tip #1: Make a list. Go online, find what you like before you go. OR make a list while you walk around (if you don't use pro-tip #3) otherwise you will forget what you came to get once you get to the checkout area. pro-tip #2: If you spend more than $100 go get yourself some free food afterwards in the cafe. I recommend the Swedish Meatballs or the Chicken Fingers. It's fairly fresh and they also have some nice salads too. pro-tip #3: walk in reverse - this is frowned upon, but if you have a list, you can go in the out door and straight where you pick up stuff! If you don't know where it is, they have little kiosks you can look stuff up on right there in the warehouse! You can thank me for saving you 4 hours later on. Unless you happen to be a fitbit user and have run low on steps during the week :) pro-tip #4: Don't go on the weekend. I know...sometimes this is not avoidable, but like any huge destination store, during the week things seem less busy. pro-tip #5: there are secret passageways in Ikea. If you look off the path of some areas, you can see shortcuts through areas. So for example, you're not into bath towels and curtains, you can just cut through and go straight for the lamps or the checkout isles. Oh and from previous Ikea's in Michigan, North Carolina, etc this is by far my favorite one. Staff is friendly, people are willing to help and things seem to move pretty fast even on a Sunday afternoon. They also offer free child care while you shop as well. read more

I am not sure how I lived in Tampa for so long and am just now discovering IKEA. My husband and I just opened up our own business and needed lots of furniture that was sturdy but inexpensive. I was in heaven when I finally checked out IKEA. The prices are amazing and for the price, the quality is decent. I do find the layout annoying as you are forced to pretty much wander through the entire store to get to any department. This forced marketing is probably effective for them as I inevitably run into something that "I had to have but never knew I needed." This makes going to IKEA a laborious process as you can never just run in and out. I was told by my business minded husband that IKEA keeps their prices low by making the customer assemble all of the furniture themselves. The Swedish company makes the furniture, boxes them up into easily shipped boxes and then they are on display in their expansive warehouse stores. So each time I buy a piece and open it up, I am greeted by a cartoon man who in place of written instructions shows me how to put things together in very animated cartoon actions. Sometimes he has a very angry look on his cartoon face and a there is a big X on the a part of the lamp that I am putting together. I know this means I shouldn't do something but what exactly is sometimes a mystery. Whatever, it is, it makes the little cartoon man very upset so I really try not to do whatever he is trying to tell me. It can be stressful. All in all, I love this store. The prices are great and the quality is good enough depending on what you need the items for. However, if you are looking for luxury pieces that you can pass onto the next generation, I probably would not get those pieces from here as I don't think they would last through decades of use. read more

Affordable furniture with names you can hardly pronounce? That'll be IKEA for you! Honestly: I do love the place when it comes to buying furniture and housewares that won't break the bank. There are some great pieces if you keep your eyes peeled! We have the Hemnes line of wardrobe and china cabinet in our house (definitely recommend them), and are probably going to add to it with the dresser for our bedroom. Is the quality above and beyond other furniture stores? Hm...nope. You'll find pressboard in the back of some pieces. But hey - I've had my china cabinet and wardrobe for 2.5 years now and they still look like new (even after moving them out of a 4 story apartment complex - no worse for wear)...just don't punch your hand through the back of them or something crazy like that! What's not to like about IKEA? It's not fancy-pants furniture, but for shelves and bookcases, I love it. I've bought bookshelves for my office, my living room and my bathroom. I've bought pantry shelves for my kitchen. And it's served us very well. It's a maze of a store to venture through, so sometimes I get disappointed when I can't just walk in and go directly to what I need, but they really do make it a shopping 'experience' rather than a shopping 'trip'. On our most recent trip we were looking for additional storage for our kitchen. While I went in with a plan to look at one piece, I actually found a less expensive shelf that offers a nice pop of color to the room. IKEA keeps me on my toes. And it let's my not-extremely-handy husband feel like he can rule the world. read more

Just purchased kitchen cabinets, but the store is busy. So we have to come back tomorrow to receive it. Another round trip 2 hours stolen. I have to give it 5 stars because it's just so awesome of a place. We've furnished 3/4 of our home with the Hemnes collection, which is solid wood and surprisingly high quality. We've also eaten at the restaurant a bunch of times and we've never had a bad meal. If you've never been to an IKEA, it can be pretty overwhelming. Expect to do several hours of walking, often while dodging people who are all over the place. Still, you can't beat the price and the value. The kitchen gadget section is my favorite, they just have so many cute things there! read more

The staff is always friendly and shopping here is easy once you know your way around. I do prefer the pizza downstairs as to the food upstairs. The WalMart of furniture only better quality and a pleasant visit lol. This store is awesome. Thank god they finally built one in Tampa. Bring lots of money because you will not leave empty handed. The deals are just too good to pass up. You can outfit an entire room with 6 or 7 pieces of furniture for under $3000. The weekends are absolute hysteria so if you must go on a Saturday or Sunday set aside 4 to 5 hours to see everything. People gripe about the quality but honestly for the price and style you can't beat it. I have a bed from IKEA which I have had for a good 6 years and there is nothing wrong with it. My favorite place to get lost and spend lots of money on things I don't need :p When they finally built this IKEA in Ybor a few years ago, we were all very excited to check it out. While it is the closest one in the Tampa area (besides Orlando), it's not located extremely close to my house, so it's a bit of a production to come out here, but I still manage to make it 1-2 times per year. The store is a bit of a maze and you really can spend hours in here. They have everything from small home decor items, to bedding and bathroom accessories, kitchen appliances, all kinds of furniture and artwork to decorate the walls. It really is possible to furnish an entire home from the items found here. I also like all the space saving ideas and mock small apartment living scenarios they have set up to demonstrate different decorating and furniture placement ideas. The prices are all what I consider to be very reasonable for good quality items. The service is usually pretty helpful and nearly anyone in the store can help you locate a special item. One of my favorite parts of IKEA is the delicious cafe that they offer for hungry shoppers who have worked up an appetite after a day of walking around this endless maze. The swedish meatballs are yum, yum good. Some of the other food I've tried has always been good too. The only not so fun part is trying to get items out the door and into your car after your purchase if you buy something big like the 7 foot tall bookcase I got last year. Assembling the items yourself isn't too fun either. Besides that, this store is a really fun adventure to find everything you could need for your home decorating necessities all under one roof. read more

IKEA is a shopping experience. Not only can you get tons of ideas from the staged rooms on the top floor, you can get 1 free hour of childcare so your ankle biters have something to do while you make decisions on how to decorate then childproof your home. When the hour is up, grab the kids and head to the restaurant. Kids eat free at various times and there's always some sort of deal for everyone else, too. My favorite is the 99 cent breakfast (scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes) with free coffee. You just can't beat it. It also pays to get there early before the crowds. I've had nearly everything at the cafeteria-style restaurant, and it's all pretty good. The meatballs are always a hit. FYI, the meatballs do not have any soy protein in them, which is wonderful for allergic folks. Usually meatballs are a mystery food, but you can read the ingredients on theirs and get a bag of frozen ones to take home! The Swedish market at the very end of the trip has some deals, too. Warm cinnamon rolls are must to take home ($4 for 6 cinnamon rolls). If the clan is still hungry, they have hot dog combos, soft serve ice cream, and other items for cheap. In the grocery section, you can find a lot of interesting items and we always take home something new to try. I like the shrimp cream cheese in a tube that you can squeeze onto some crisp bread. Yummy! The ginger thin cookies are good, too. The furniture and furnishings need a mention, too. Some of it is flat out cheap, some is amazing, and some is very nice. None of it is Thomasville or Ethan Allen, and it doesn't try to be, either. This is the perfect place to furnish baby/kid/teen/dorm rooms! If you want function and price point with a pleasing price point, this is it. This is not luxurious or flea market. IKEA's best quality is its unpretentiousness. It still is new (read CROWDED) and a screaming baby magnet with inconsiderate moms blocking aisles and kids jumping on furniture with shoes on. Upstairs is all the big stuff/furniture, downstairs is all the decor stuff. Some great finds and inventions abound. They do not have bags so bring your own (you can buy bags there too). They have a good-sized grocery area if you want to bring a cooler to get things home (pastries to caviar, herring to jam). Great catalog and on-line. Plan on heavy walking. August 2014 update. Crowds have mellowed. Opens at 10 a.m. and that's best when to shop. On Mondays it includes FREE breakfast--eggs, potatoes 2 sausage links! A standard breakfast could be 99 cents--coffee and tea are always free. Food prices are always reasonable--5 meatballs for a buck? Downstairs a hot dog is 50 cents or a $1 depending on the special. Great finds recently included artificial and real plants--big and small. But dang, one is "wiped" by the end. Did not see electric shopping carts here (for the old, crippled or weary). If IKEA was a theme-park, I'd buy the year round ticket just to visit it everyday! The first largest home furniture store in Tampa! I find the location of the store a little odd, I mean as if Downtown isn't small enough but how the cooperates and architectures can manage to fit such a monster in the area is simply in AW and brilliant idea, because it's the giant blue and yellow building is visible from miles away on the freeway! Parking is organized with IKEA's parking coordinators(?), assisting you to the right parking spot (just like DisneyWorld!) The magic happens on the 2nd floor of the build, displaying everything from spoons to sofas and everything in between. The Swedish furniture styles are modern and simple, all at an affordable price. That being said, the quality is obviously not up to par with Robb & Stucky or Kanes. The building is so well organized and entertaining that getting lost isn't something to fear. And if in deed you do get lost, there are large yellow arrows labeled on the ground as well as maps located through out the store( it's THAT big!) They have a Kiddy Center where you can have your kids babysit by the IKEA babysitter while you shop and also a mini food court, also located on the 2nd floor (inexpensive). When all is done, you can head down to the first floor to retrieve your items all boxed up and ready to go. It really is a wonderful joyous place to shop and be entertained! I purchased clear bins online for pick up at the Ikea store near my condo in downtown Tampa. I never received a confirmation email informing me that the bins were ready for pick up. When I went to the store to pick up they informed me that the bins do not come with lids. I went back out to the sales floor to buy lids and none where available. The system shows 28 in stock so an associate looked for them and could not find. Since no lids were available I decided to return the bins and now I am holding a ticket #20 and they are working with customer #9. Beyond frustrated. Ah, IKEA....I personally have always had good experiences at IKEAs in general and at this IKEA, specifically. Although I'm not a fan of super-modern looking decor, I do love a lot of the furniture and decorations at IKEA. I also like the home essentials, candles, frames, etc. I like it that they have pretty much everything you could need to set up a home, lots of options, and really fantastic prices. I have a hanging bar that i purchased a wile back and always get compliments. Ive also bought organizers,silverware, rugs, and patio furniture. Im pleased with them all and Im sure i will buy something there again. An added perk of the IKEA experience is the food!!! I remember how shocked I was when I found out how good their food is! I know there's that thing about the meatballs beings made of horse meat....and I have no idea if that's true....but even if it was, aren't we just opposed to horse meat because we're not used to it? I'm not saying I want to eat horse meat, I'm just saying how is it different from eating a cow? Anyway, their non meat food items are great too: ice cream, chocolate bars, cinnamon rolls, etc. I love the little Swedish grocery store that's downstairs. Purchased white storage shelves for our closet. The baskets are sold separately from the unit in the marketplace. However, store was completely disorganized and customer service was nowhere to be found. So, we were left to guess which baskets worked for our unit. Upon trying to return our incorrect basket with a receipt, the store manager told us the baskets were discontinued. Even though the frame was still being sold. He also let us know it was no big deal for me to have to drive down from Brooksville to make this return because he drives over an hour to work every day. That's NOT my concern. I went to IKEA for the first time 2 weeks before I moved into my apartment & it was all fun and games until I got to the warehouse. The staff were not friendly towards us at all. A man straight up told my sister and I no when we asked for assistance (were both a little over 100lbs) and not only that but were rude to us when we tried to get any type of direction in finding our items. A stranger actually saw we needed help and walked us through the whole experience. A STRANGER as the warehouse guys stood and chit chatted in a circle amongst themselves. We finally checked out and went to register for a delivery to the apartment on our move out date and the employee bluntly warned us that the movers were slackers and to watch out... like what?? & to top it all off they forgot 2 pieces to my bed frame which I'm still trying to put together myself (because no one gave me the option of having an expert set it up which I guess is a thing??) & I had to re purchase the 2 missing pieces elsewhere because every time I call the IKEA store the phones are busy or get put on hold for 63 minutes. I'm an IKEA fan, usually. Once in a while I get over it - usually when the place is slammed with people who are wandering aimlessly. Sure, the joint is a bit overwhelming, but the cheap is equally awesome. My last abode now has a lovely IKEA kitchen with all the extras - and my tenants (can't sell in this market) adore that which I installed. At this point, I'd be loathe to install any kitchen that wasn't of their design ethos. Course, in a high end home, I'd have it custom built - but I'd want their hardware. ProTip: Go during the day, during the week. Weekends are HORRIBLE with snot nosed kids, blimps pushing strollers and meatball gobbling lumps in the restaurant. (Seriously - I'm chubby - need to lose 25 lbs for sure... and I was the skinniest person in the restaurant the other day. *shudder*) ProTip2: Get one of the maps and you can scoot thru the place without having to walk the entire 'showroom death march' which might take you a day, given the throngs in the aisles. read more

I admit it, I was an Ikea virgin. When I hit the doors and smelled those incredible cinnamon rools, I had to have one. It was warm and fresh and soon good. Staff wasn't very friendly. I think there is only 1 way in and 1 way out of this store. It was a Sunday and the store was packed. You kind of get swept into the crowd and pushed along. Thankfully there wasn't a fire. I saw a whole lot of varied items from Christmas decorations to toilet brushes to furniture and all things in between. It certain ally has a vast and varied selection of numerous items and it is a good place to get some decorating tips. I wish I read Dutch, as much of the language is not English, on various items. I saw some good buys and some I felt were overpriced. What I did not see were any sale items, except on the ground floor there is a small clearance area. I Kea isn't just around the corner for most of us. I wasn't driving but, it was Southeast of Ybor, so my guess is between Ybor and Brandon. I can see people's fascination with this store. It defiantly has some unique and specialty items, as it is a Dutch chain store. I usually can never make it through a store this size and not buy anything, but somehow I had no problem. The other 2 only picked up a picture frame and a toilet brush. That was a lot of effort and driving to get a cinnamon bun! I am keeping an open mind, but personally, it's a bit far for me to go for a picture frame. Now if you were remodeling... maybe, I am open to the possabilities. Another problem I had with the store were the nonexistent sales people. We tried to get assistance several times to no avail and many products had no price marked on them. I really wish this store had been in Tampa when I first moved out of the dorms. It's like a ROOMS 2 GO that doesn't suck and you can find super cheapie stuff on a budget or get very nice furniture. Some will whine that IKEA is junk and trendy, but honestly it's a breath of fresh air for Tampa furniture in general. US based stores for things like platform bed frames tend to not exist or be $1200+ for some Ethan Allen stuff that you feel guilty for buying. The housewares section is great and has nice prices and easily compares or beats chains like Bed Bath & Beyond. The cafeteria is cute along with a great cinnamon roll or hot dog combo by the check out for only $1.50. The size can be a bit daunting but once you learn where all the shortcut passages are you can find what you want quickly.. Coolest thing I've found there so far: SUPER compact CFBs for my ceiling fans that put Home Depot to -shame-. As others have mentioned even approaching July it is still a circus on the weekends. Get their right when they open on Sundays and you can get in and out pretty easily. Otherwise, good luck! read more

What is not to like about Ikea??? I like Ikea because if you need help, there is someone there to help you; however, there are no pushy salespeople trying to push anything on you. I love that you can see, touch, test and try anything before you commit to the purchase. Also, they make it super easy to find the items that you see on the showroom floor in the stockroom part . I have never had an issue with the checkout lanes. If this will be your first visit; bring your own bags if you are buying small items as IKEA does not provide bags. However , I recommend buying an Ikea bag as they are awesome! I have one that I use all of the time because it can carry so much weight without tearing or breaking. I am also convinced that anyone can follow their assembly directions. They are follow by picture; what is not to love??? And you do not need to have a tool kit to put it together. I am an Ikea fan. I love Ikea! I was amazed from the moment I walked into the store. It has a very impressive size. I like how they have the path laid right out for you with little shortcuts to get you where you need to go faster. They merchandise there items well. When I went I saw a few of the smaller items used in different ways in each mock room. The food is also really good. My girlfriend and I have been there a couple times for shopping and we always find ourselves being sucked in by the smell of the good food. I think it's a really cool idea to have food at a furniture store, and even cooler that they sell the food down stairs. I used to think IKEA furniture was not very reliable and that you got what you paid for, but we recently bought a bed frame and a couple night stands and I was really impressed with there construction. It's been a few months and everything is still holding strong and hasn't needed to be re tightened. My only criticism would be that it's not always easy to find an employee if you have a question. I usually have to walk over near the kitchens where they have the computers to design rooms to find somebody. Other than that I love going there and shopping! read more

I love this place. Really neat home décor ideas and furniture that you just don't see anywhere else. Lots of great "space saving" ideas, that seems to be their forte. The cafeteria is even really great with very affordable food (try the Swedish meatballs!!!!!). Set aside a couple hours though, this place is huge!!!! read more
