Over a few days, the name Antica Caciara kept popping up. Then I picked up a Louis Vuitton Rome City Guide in our hotel lobby, flipped through it, and there it was again. At that point, it had to be fate... or really good marketing. I'm choosing to believe it was fate! The moment you walk in, you're hit with the most amazing aromas of cheese and cured meats. They have a wonderful selection of cheeses, meats, cookies, oils, balsamic vinegars, and all kinds of Italian goodies. But what really made our visit special were Roberto and Anna. Their family has owned and operated the shop since 1900, and they welcomed us with such genuine warmth. Roberto proudly showed us a magazine photo featuring him and the shop, and you could immediately tell how much his family and their history mean to him. It was absolutely charming. Of course, we couldn't leave without bringing Italy home with us. We bought what may have been an excessive amount of 24-month Parmigiano Reggiano to share with family and friends. Anna got quite a laugh out of how much cheese we were taking home! Let's just say an extra suitcase was needed. She even gave us detailed instructions on how to wrap and store it--cheesecloth first, then parchment so the cheese can breathe. Our friends and family were thrilled to receive their little pieces of Italy, beautifully wrapped just the way Anna taught us. Places like this are what make traveling so memorable. Yes, the food was fantastic, but it was the people, the history, and the personal experience that made Antica Caciara one of our favorite little discoveries in Rome. If you're in Rome, go! And tell Roberto and Anna that Glenn and Bob sent you.

I ended up drinking some souvenirs before leaving so had to go back to replace them. My second visit the woman running the shop showed me many of the items that come directly from her Father in southern Italy. yes limoncello is great but there are so many other flavors you can try too. I was partial to the creme. I also picked up some jelly and a small jar of cacio e pepe which was fantastic. This is a small storefront so be aware you might have to use Google to find it but well worth the effort !

Since I love to cook and mostly cook Italian, it was pure torture! I did buy Parmigiana Reggiano aged 60 months because the taste and price was too good to pass up. But I didn't have room in my suitcase - weight wise - to buy the olive oil, aged balsamic and other food items I wanted. They had the typical tourist souvenirs like scarves, aprons, ceramic bowls, and a wonderful assortment of olive wood charcuterie boards and serving utensils. I collect them but didn't buy any because the prices were the same or higher than what I find at Trader Joe's or Marshall's! And again, too heavy to lug back to the states especially if they aren't unique or a fabulous price. There was even a stall selling a vegetable spiralizer like you see on late night tv commercials. He was demonstrating the plastic gadget and crowds were lined up watching. Cracked me up! Did you pick up any treasures while in a Rome? Yes, a plastic veggie spiralizer! Prices of many items were the same or higher than the shops. For example, a tiny bottle of 20 year old aged balsamic was $22 but $18 in a shop so know your prices and definitely try to barter. Mercato Campo de Fiori is located in a bustling area of the city so after shopping the market, you can stop in other shops and boutiques on all of the side streets. There are plenty of leather, clothing, jewelry, and stores selling ceramics and food products plus cafes and restaurants in abundance.
