Fantastic food at a reasonable price. We had lunch then came back for dinner the next day. Owner has been in the restaurant / food business his entire life. Pizzas are the best we have had in Italy. We had ravioli, spaghetti and a vegetable couscous plate that was phenomenal. The owner makes his own pasta. Just can't say enough about this jewel. If back in Rome, I will be back.

Cacio e pepe with a glass of the house white wine

Fantastic casual food with friendly service. Highly recommend their cacio e pepe and all their antipasti selections. Just short walk from the Garden of Villa Borghese but not packed with tourists.

The local, hidden gem you need to go to. The food was so reasonably priced but the quality of it outweighed any "cheap" reservation I had. I ordered the Cacio e Pepe, Neopolitana Pizza, tiramisu, and a bottle of Barberesco wine. Filipo was a hoot. He had a great attitude, swift service, and really enhanced our experience with his history and stories. The ambiance was casual, cute, perfect for an impromptu bite to eat!

We went to this restaurant last night on our first night in Rome and it was just perfect! The house wine and food were all so delicious. We had the bucatini, bolognese, and tagliatelle with mushroom/sausage. For dessert, we had a lemon custard tart that was amazing! What made the experience truly special was the owner. He was so kind and funny, and let my four year old push the buttons on his device to order. He explained that he got in at 5 am everyday to make all the desserts fresh every morning. It was a truly wonderful experience and a great way to kick off our trip. The prices were also very reasonable and it felt very authentic since there were several Italian families there as well. I'd highly recommend giving it a try!

My husband and I came to eat at this restaurant on our first night in Italy and the first impression with Phillipio was excellent! He was very kind and gave his best recommendations of the food! We tried each he recommended and he did not disappoint! My husband and I stopped by for dinner again on our last vacation night just because we enjoyed our first experience and the delicious food! Out of all the restaurants we tried in Italy, this was a favorite hands down! Don't miss this one!

If you find yourselves northeast of the Spanish Steps, do yourself a favor and eat here. It's on Via Lombarda right outside Hotel Garda. We were here 5 nights and ate 3 dinners and one breakfast here (stayed at Hotel Garda). The food is fantastic, prices reasonable, and the owner is charming and friendly with all of the guests. By our second visit, our 17 year old was letting him choose his meal with no restrictions because he trusted him that much!

    Lasagna and pizza

Food is so so good!! The Lasagna was home made and fresh! He told me he made it in the morning pizza so so good I loved the crisp to it.

First dinner on this trip to Rome with the family and it did not disappoint. We sat outside because it was a perfect night for it, but the air conditioned dining room looked comfortable as well. Our waiter (seemed like the only one waiting tables) had a great personality but also gave us the ok to "tell him to shut up" if we chose. I assume he was the owner because he spoke of coming in early to make the specials, and said he made desserts himself. The caprese was nice, but everyone really loves their pasta dishes (cacio I pepe, carbonara, and a special with onions and tomato sauce in a Parmesan bowl). The pizza is also great. We intended to order main entrees but were too full, but we did get a pizza to go, and ended up coming back and getting some for lunch the next day. So good. The dessert, whoever makes it, was special as well. The kids got cookies (just delivered "special" on the house), while we also got tiramisu and a cannolo. All amazing. We would love to come back if we get the chance but recommend to all.

    Tonnarelli cacio e Pepe

Stopped into Il Fiammifero Strano after arriving in Rome. Philipo (sp?) -the owner- was so kind and friendly. The food was amazing. One of the best meals my husband and I have had in Europe over our two weeks being here. We shared the bruschette original, anchovies and burrata, and I had the tonnarelli and he had the carbonara. The carbonara was rich and decadent and the tonnarelli cacio e Pepe was everything you hope for in a cacio e Pepe and more. The owner really does create a sense of community with his customers and he treated us with some of his homemade pastries at the end of our meal. I feel like this restaurant could be a home for any traveler on their first visit or their return to Rome. Definitely sensed from the ambiance that locals enjoyed being here, were known by all who worked there, and that it was a neighborhood spot beloved by all.

Expecting it to be there one year, I walked over to Piazza Navona and Gelateria Navona had evidently closed. I would then get gelato here and there. I then learned that Giolitti is a long standing gelateria and it's also in the historic center. I filed the name away in my head. Then, one day, I happened to walk right in front of it without even looking for it, so I went in. Giolitti is popular and it can be crowded. I'm going to say that I waited about 10 to 15 minutes. You pay at a counter first, deciding on what you want and how much of it, such as scoops and whether it will be in a cup or a cone. Once up at the counter, they don't rush you, which surprised me. I don't take that much time since I don't experiment much, but I still appreciate the courtesy. The price is roughly what everyone else in the historic center is charging. I always opt for the gelato it in a cup so you can "control" the dripping. The gelato - a mix of dark chocolate and two citrus flavors - was "molto buono." That said, just because it's so popular, I'm not going to downgrade Giolitti for it and complain about the crowds. You downgrade gourmet donut places in the U.S. where their fame has gone to their heads. There is also a spacious salon with nicer decor in which you can eat inside. At this point, Giolitti is really the only gelateria in Rome whose name I remember. I would gladly go back and I recommend it.

That means almost 50 years of driving thousands of people insane with pleasure from utterly amazing ice cream. That is a good way to spend 50 years. * * * Most Italian Gelato places are very consistent. If one flavor is good, they all are good. If one flavor is fake or artificial, they all are fake and artificial. That said - despite La Romana's full range, The establishment is known for one distinctive flavor that is very much their signature. Crema dal 1947. Crema dal 1947 is absolutely and utterly insane. It is an eggnog custard gelato subtly flavored with lemon zest. It is the most creamy dreamy lemon cloud dessert every made by any human being. Just to get an appropriate placement within the lemon family, I paired it with a plain lemon gelato. Rome has absolutely amazing lemons. Plain lemon gelato almost anywhere is die-and-go-to-heaven good. Putting eggnog custard creamy dream Crema dal 1947 With bracing in-your-face screaming lemon-lemon-lemon traditional gelato Was like pairing Margot Robbie as Barbie with Amy Winehouse singing her soul out. Both were absolutely perfect for what they are. I want to have that ice cream cone tonight, tomorrow, the day after that, the day after that and every other consecutive day for the next consecutive 50 years. When La Romana becomes 100 years old, I can think about changing flavors. But it is hard to argue with perfect perfection.

But I stopped in my tracks because I saw a line wrapped up 50+ people deep, all waiting just to get inside and order. Now it's day two in Rome and I still hadn't had any gelato, even though I've walked past what feels like a hundred shops. So what would a fat man from Alabama do? Turn right back around, of course--because nothing says "this is probably good" like a crowd stacked up like cordwood waiting for ice cream. I finally make it up to the counter and the young guy looks at me and says in English, "What do you want?" Well... I can't pronounce half of what I'm looking at, so I just show him a picture of his own menu I had snapped a minute earlier. He smiles, reads it out loud, and then asks, "What size?" At that point my brain is a mess, so I mumble "medium" and point at the cup sitting by the register. One problem down. Then I move into the next line--about a dozen people ahead of me--and when it's finally my turn again, I just point at my receipt like, "It's on there somewhere, I think." I can't read Italian, so I'm fully operating on faith at this point. The guy looks up and says, louder this time: "What flavor?" Flavor? That was not the question I was prepared for. So I point back at the picture again and say, "Whatever that is... I want that one." He scoops it up, loads it into the cup, and sends me on my way. Now comes the real test--taste it--but there are people everywhere, so I grab a quick photo first, because priorities. First bite? Hallelujah. That was the moment. That gelato hit and I just kept walking down the sidewalk like a man who somehow figured out how to survive ordering ice cream in Italy. Seriously, it was excellent. And if I get turned around again like today, I already know where I'm going back.
