I've been to Donegan's for drinks before but I finally got to have one of their legendary dinners…read morelast week. This really is a bit of a gem of a place so I almost don't want to tell people about it! The facility is lovely and, even though it's an old building, they keep it very fresh and clean looking with updated furnishing and fixtures while still maintaining a very homey feel. I love it when the fires are going and the bar is very cozy and bright. On this occasion, we chose the dining room. When we arrived, we were taken to a table in one of the larger rooms in the back that are more typically used for events. It was a lovely room but I preferred to be somewhere a little closer to the bar and main, older part of the building. The hostess was perfectly accommodating and this was no problem. Instead, my husband and I put in our orders at the bar while we had a drink and when our food was ready, they took us to a different table. The service was completely friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a hard time choosing what to order, but settled on the fresh hake with roast potatoes, tomatoes and cauliflower puree. It was so so good. I ate everything. My husband got a steak and chips, which were perfectly cooked. The meals around ours looked very good, too. Donegan's also pulls a brilliant pint and we had both Guinness and Smithwicks. Can't wait until we can come back again. Just love this place.

Similar to, or maybe slightly better than Relish, which it replaces (3.5/5 green stars)…read moreThe Highlanes Gallery and café (originally Relish and now Five Good Things) are fave places to visit when in Drogheda. The kind of food served at Five Good Things is not a million miles away from the old Relish menu, so if you liked Relish, I suggest checking out FGT! I went with my brother and nephew and we all enjoyed our meals. I was a bit disappointed in some aspects of my vegetarian breakfast, it has to be said. The veggie sausage and black pudding weren't very good - the other items on the plate were much better. Easily fixed - pick different options for the sausage and black pudding (if store-bought) or perhaps use substitutes like beans or lentils. I'm also giving Five Good Things 3.5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. * They have a good number of vegetarian options on the menu and I guess some could be made vegan by leaving out the cheese or eggs. * For dishes containing meat, it's mostly chicken, which has a much lower environmental impact than beef. * Coffee is from Our Boy Bailey (Coffee Perfection roasters) in Dunboyne. 1 kg bags of beans are for sale. It's hard to find good info on this coffee but it seems that they aim for direct trade relationships with coffee farmers. * Would be nice to know about ingredient sourcing and that kind of thing - the website is very sparse on info. * Coffee travel mugs (keep cups) are for sale, encouraging costumers to do away with pesky disposable cups. Relish Cafe - The veggie stack was the vegetarian option back in 2018. Then it changed to the vegan taco - also good!

Great location with outdoor seating over the beach (3.5/5 green stars)…read moreI just reviewed the Relish café at Southgate in Drogheda so I'm taking a trip down memory lane to review this Bettystown branch of Relish. I've been here twice over the last few years and both times it was an enjoyable experience. Coffee drinks were good (better than the Southgate branch) and my veggie dishes were very tasty too. Probably the best thing about this branch is the outdoor seating that looks out over the beach. A few years ago I had the veggie stack for lunch but I think that has been replaced by vegan taco. Nice to see a totally vegan option on the menu (and some vegetarian options too). I'm also giving Relish Bettystown 3.5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. * They have a reasonable number of vegetarian/vegan items on the menu but could do with a few more. * Most of the meat dishes contain chicken, which is more sustainable than beef. * They use free-range eggs and organic bread for the French toast. * The website says that Relish uses "fresh and seasonal ingredients from local suppliers" but could be a bit more forthcoming with details. I wrote to them for more info but didn't hear back. For a few items, such as cheeses, they do name their sources. Would be nice to know where things like coffee beans come from.
