Came by here for dinner and was throughly impressed. We had two glasses of Terre-Forti Nero d'Avola followed by Calamari, Penne Arranbiata and pepperoni pizza. All dishes were great. The cheese on the pizza was very authentic as was the pepperoni. The pasta was perfectly cooked and had a bit of heat to it. The service from Gabriela was great as was the atmosphere. I would recommend Il Padrino to travelers visiting Cork. read more

This small alley restaurant in Cork City had an old-world charm. We made a last-minute reservation and I got the sense they squeezed us in. The Host & Hostess were not welcoming or warm. I got the sense our 8:30 pm reservation was not what they wanted this evening. Overall the Service was good and the food was good. Nothing to rave about, the kids had spaghetti and meatballs, which they said were good. The pasta was very good, most likely house-made. The oldest daughter ordered a pizza, she is a pizza snob like her father and gave it a mediocre rating. The two servers that supported our table were very nice and efficient. The location was the deciding factor in going here as it was within a block of our hotel. I would recommend for a casual Italian meal while in Cork. read more

Was looking forward to trying this place with such a high rating. The food was mediocre at best, the arancini was dry with a mayo based dipping sauce which in my opinion did not go well. My husbands lasagna was fine and so was the tortellini- but certainly nothing to write home about. The service was sub par, our waitress clearly was about to be cut so when it came time for dessert she came over and said "you guys don't want dessert or coffee right?" When we said we actually would like to see a dessert menu, she came back put down the menus without a word and we never saw her again. Someone else eventually came over, we tried to put in our order and were told they didn't make tiramisu in the morning so they didn't have any. Seems like something that could be told when the menus arrived. All in all, had the meal been a little less expensive it would have rated a little higher. When I pay for a pricier meal I think the food, service and ambience should match- sadly, it did not. read more

The manager of this place deserves a medal. He had the ultimate in obnoxious customers the night we when (it wasn't us, promise). It was a busy Saturday night, and when we arrived at 8.30, the foursome at the table next to us were just after paying their bill. An hour and a half later, they were still there. Just chatting, completely oblivious to the fact that restaurants are not charities and occassionally like to seat other customers. The manager was gracious enough to just give them a few subtle hints that they were inconveniecing him, but they went unheeded. I'm all for relaxed dining, but it's tough for restaurants to make money at the best of times, it seemed like they were going out of their way to be annoying. Having to watch other diners be turned away because of these people was heart-breaking, because the food at Il Padrino is really great and the wine was fantastic too. As a Cork local, my friend and I come to this place at least once a month! It is our absolute favorite for a really delicious Carbonara. We even went to Italy recently and did our own little Carbonara taste test and Il Padrinos Carbonara beat out ALL places we ate at in Italy except for one, meaning we were even more impressed with it after that! While we are those sad people that love what we love and never branch out to try something new, we always look at what is being ordered around us and it always looks wonderful. The staff is always so friendly and accommodating, the atmosphere is really great and the space itself has a lot of character. The last time we were there there was some miscommunication between waiters and we didn't get menus for about 5-10 minutes. After apologizing profusely they immediately offered us a starter of our choice on the house and I was very pleasantly surprised with their service. (If you are from the states you will think this is what EVERY place should do but I promise you the customer service standards in Ireland are very different and so this was very special and impressive service!) I have had a great experience EVERY time I have come here. I work in a tourist shop in town and always recommend this place when anyone mentions Italian or just a nice meal, and I recommend it to you as well! Enjoy! read more

It should be 2 1/2 stars. The stars are mainly for the fast and friendly staff, certainly not for the food, which in total was a disappointment. As starter I had Bruschetta, which was completely tasteless, the salad on the side was not fresh, the leaves looked old and dry. The garlic bread was disappointing as well. As main course I ordered Fusilli con Gamberetti, the prawns were not fresh, they were frozen before, fresh prawns just taste better. With the food I ordered Rosé wine from France, what they offered was average. As dessert I ordered some cake, which was definetively not "home made", but bought somewhere. Overall it was an average, but overpriced meal. The godfather ("il padrino") would not be happy about the food. I was there with some friends and one of them is a professional cook, he confirmed my impressions. That was a one time experience. read more

I'm from out of town. Chose this place mostly because it looked popular and I was craving Italian. Loved my night here. I dined alone which gave me the opportunity to watch the staff and the restaurant do their thing. The customer service is excellent. I had conversations with several staff including the owner. It's very clear that he has a high attention to detail and that he keeps an eye on everything in the restaurant. You can tell he truly cares about his customers. My waiter was Luccio, he's great!! He was so kind and incredibly attentive. My food was good, the montipulcciano wine was nice. The setting was lovely, and I highly recommend this place. read more

My wife & I were in Ireland for our honeymoon as part of a coach tour. On the Saturday night of the tour, we were on our own for food. We found Il Padrino thanks to Google Maps. It was close to our hotel & we were tired, so the very short walk was appreciated. When we got there, the chap at the door told us they were booked & smiled as us thinking we could walk-in off the street without a reservation. Once I told him we were on our honeymoon, they were beyond lovely at squeezing us in. A reservation canceled & we were seated next to the kitchen. I was visiting home for Christmas and one of my friends organized a reunion dinner so that we could catch up. She specifically made reference to the fact that we were not told we had to give up the table at any particular time which we all thought was great as it allowed for time to reminisce over a nice bottle of wine. At the same time, we did not plan to stay there for the entire night.....we had places to go, people to see and moves like Jagger to execute in Cork's fashionable night spots! I'm not going to make excuses, we did not order immediately. 3 of us arrived early for our 7.30 reservation and were seated. Our other friend arrived late (there is always one!) but we ordered starters before she got there, so even though we were delayed, it wasn't a big delay. Our waiter was mannerly and attentive and the food was great and couldn't really be faulted. So where did it all go wrong? It was probably close to 9pm and the waiter came by to take our dessert order. We ordered a dessert each and also some tea to go with it. The waiter returned with our desserts and before we had even started eating came back with the check and told us that the table was needed and could we settle up and get out basically...albeit worded a little more eloquently and in an Italian accent which up to then we had considered *dreamy*. He then proceeded to do the same at the table to our left and the table to our right. Now I understand that it was a busy time for the restaurant and that their food is in high demand but it seemed to me that asking people to leave before they had even started their dessert was quite rude and probably did not contribute to the best dining experience - especially when we hadn't even received our tea yet! The two tables on either side vacated their spots almost immediately while we took a little longer finishing our food, using the facilities and then settling up. That's when the fun started. As we left the restaurant, the owner asked us if everything had been ok for us. Our designated spokesperson stayed behind to politely let him know that while our food had been great, we didn't really like the way in which we were asked to leave. When she didn't emerge after a couple of minutes, we looked back in and saw the owner shouting down at her (she is 5ft 2) and manically waving a clipboard in her face. She then came outside and was followed by the owner who continued to shout at us all in the street. The general gist being that his clipboard said 9 o' clock and that was all about it, it was his restaurant and he could run it any way he wanted to and there was no way he was going to apologize to us. At this point, the people seated near the window were staring out at the commotion and people passing in the street were also taking notice. The owner sneered at us and informed us that as we didn't come there often, he didn't really care. Now I'm no expert in the restaurant business but I don't think that shouting at your customers in the street encourages repeat business...just a hunch. I certainly won't be returning the next time I visit Cork after that unwarranted attack. Thanks but no thanks Il Padrino, your food is good but you're just not fun to be around! read more

Consistently good food at decent prices. The service is highly professional and very efficient. Booking is advised particularly at the weekend. The food is cooked in view of the diners which is always a good sign. We've been eating here fairly regularly for the past 5 years and have never had a bad meal. This is by far my favourite restaurant in Cork. The food is always a very high standard. I have been going here for over 4 years and never had an issue. The staffs are always super nice and there is always a matradee present and you can see him constantly delegating. Prices are at the high end of the scale but the food is definitely worth it. I have been to other restaurants in the Cork area with the same price bracket and have always felt left down due to a lack of vegetarian options and serving pre made meals. I've never had this issue like this at Il Padrino. The atmosphere is always great. Perfect lighting and decor. The restaurant always looks immaculate. My advice is pace yourself as you will definitely want to have a starter, main course, desert and coffee... YUM! read more

**ALERT FOR VEGETARIANS**. My experience of this restaurant was terrible. On reading the menu I noted on the list of vegetarian option they mentioned double cream and parmesan cheese. The waiter who served us asked the chefs to check if my assumptions were correct before I informed the manager and yes it was true, the products they were using for the vegetarian meals did contain gelatine and animal fats. The manager was very rude to me when I informed him that double cream and parmesan cheese both contain animal products and its false advertising to call those dishes vegetarian. He is a very rude man. He intimidated me and my friend so much we decided to leave. He told us he didn't run a vegetarian restaurant. I think as a diner it's important to let an establishment know about dietary needs but when met with hostility and intimidation it never makes for a great experience. read more
