A few hiccups along the way with the final permit but Sam acknowledged the mistake on his end and said he would sign off the edits in the revision phase of construction. He asked if it is a single family home, I say yes. He asks what city I live in, I say Oak Park. He says okay, it is $500 for an initial consultation. We were happy with the work and collaboration process - he visited the house and discussed the project thoroughly at the beginning of the project while we were working on our architectural plans, and then over then next couple of months we had several phone/online screen-share meetings to resolve some details and adjust the project design (even though it is a single-family one story home, there are some more complex vaulted ceiling areas that needed to be resolved. Contacted this company about a month ago regarding a retaining brick wall we needed to rebuild. We spent about two weeks, back-and-forth, with questions, pictures, explanations and so forth. Eventually, I asked the owner, Sam, to send us a proposal and contract. The proposal was rather lengthy and had many exceptions that could cause the original cost for the plans we need to go over budget. So it seemed to us. But, Sam said if we have any questions to let him know. So I did. The question had to do with getting a site plan that was required by the city. Sam had originally stated that it was included in the cost he gave us, but, when we reviewed the proposal, the site plan was included as an exception, NOT part of what he proposed to do as he originally stated to me. So, I emailed Sam and asked him if the site plan is supposed to be included. He responded with a revised proposal that had removed the site plan as an exception, so it is now part of the work to be done. Okay, so I emailed Sam and thanked him for making this change, and will review the proposal and let him know if we have any other questions. Apparently, Sam didn't like this as he emailed me back (see attachment entitled "Email from Sam") basically instructing me to forget the project, he's too busy to do it. REALLY!? I realize that we've spent time going back-and-forth over this, but you did say if we have questions to let you know! So--and considering this is a fairly large undertaking by us, a project we've never done before--one would think you'd want to make sure the client COMPLETELY AND FULLY understands BEFORE signing the agreement what to expect! I guess you would rather have a messy problem that arises AFTER the agreement is signed, rather than starting the work with everyone on the "same page". In retrospect, I think we're better off not hiring you to do the job anyway; if you're going to be this impatient and dismissive towards a potential client now, I wonder how you would be when a disagreement arises over a misunderstanding that could have been averted by ensuring that the client has a complete understanding of what's expected, and how the job is done. This company is cheap, but at the end of the day this is going to cost you twice the most expensive engineering companies because of the abundance of the flaws and errors in their designs. The errors not only make the permit process lengthier but also costs you a fortune in your construction cost due to use of unnecessary expensive structures/materials and errors. The designs are mostly outsourced to students in India where they have no knowledge of construction design and architecture in the US. I had a terrible experience with this company. It took him less than 48 hrs to create a stamped detailed engineering plan for what I needed. He arranged to have his crew out the next day to perform the job. This is a decision I am very happy I made. I was looking for an engineer opinion because my contractor is installing very heavy bifold doors in our home, and has to remove a supporting beam to do so.
