Was on our way somewhere else and just happened upon Third Base and based on the sign alone, we had to give it a go. So glad that we did! The bartender was super friendly and told us the entire history of the building. You can tell this is a community bar and the regulars are treated like family. When we said it was our first time, they gave us free shots and let us sign the legendary ceiling (which isn't always the case at local bars where regulars are their focus). I've had to tell an old man off more than a few times for having a loose tongue, and while I've never personally seen anyone of color or members of our LGBTQ community being treated differently (in fact, there are several regulars who may fit one or many of those identities), I wont discount their experiences. Sometimes the crowd can definitely be rough around the edges. Sometimes that roughness is part of the charm of this place, but not if we're talking about people behaving in a racist or homophobic manner - if that happened to you, I'm sorry. That sucks. Again, I've never seen it and only had great experiences in a very welcoming and judge-free environment, but I'm also a white girl living in the suburbs, so what the hell do I know? At the end of the day, if dive bars and epic karaoke are your thing, this place may have helped to write the book on them. I'm a fan.

She was wonderful with suggestions, telling us about other watering holes in the vicinity and even beyond Gettysburg. We had inquired about LGBT friendly places within a short car ride and were basically told to go to Harrisburg or a small town in Maryland. At that point, that's when things started to get a little weird. After outing ourselves, things got a little uneasy for us. We ended up meeting the owner's grandson. He was great and seconded the suggestions the bartender made. But when he introduced us to the locals at the end of the bar, we kind of wanted to not say much. It actually made us feel unwelcomed after a bit of sitting near them. Kind of like all eyes were on us. After a few more minutes of that, we paid our bill and made it out the door. So the thing is that it's a great bar, if you're a local. Or maybe even if it's crowded, so there are other people to focus on. We liked everything, the freedom to smoke, the pricing, the bartender, but the atmosphere changed at some point and flipped the script. Would we go back?
