I settled on a coffee mug wall art piece . The girls all picked animal figurines , my friend Heather just watched and assisted her girls with getting paint . The women who was working wasn't super charismatic, but admittedly, she had a full house that afternoon with no help . There is a wood shop, a metal shop, a fabric area, a Cricut machine, embroidery machine, 3D printer, laser cutters, and all kinds of other interesting tools to make stuff. They offer classes, and let people use the tools after taking safety classes if you show up during open shop hours when the supervisor of the space is there. They rent out small spaces as incubators and offer classes and guidance for growing businesses. If you have ideas of a thing you want to make, chances are there is somebody here who can teach you how to make it. The organization is very much based around community and sharing knowledge. So far I've had the opportunity to make a shot glass, make some jewelry and learn the history of glass beads and play with 3D printing. As I mentioned previously the Foundry the incubator for a variety of business that make their home here. I recently attended the holiday market where a number of the vendors that make the Foundry home were open and many visiting crafters. Many if not all of these vendors host a class or two that for a reasonable price you can get hands on to learn a new skill. So far I've taken 3 and I can tell you these classes are small, intimate and really give you a hands on experience that really makes the class worth it. Some of these resident creators include a company that makes pucks and baseballs into bottle openers, a metal worker, glass blower, jewelry maker, a wooden frame bicycle maker and a man that makes bird feeders that resemble Frank Lloyd Wright windows. Most of them have etsy or other stores to browse what is available for purchase. For me, The Foundry is about creation, creativity and the access to be able to taken part in it. To work with skilled craftsmen, hear their stories, get tips while making something in the process. So check out a class or 10, it's worth it!

I was given classes at ArtYard as a gift several times, and each time by the end of the session, I vowed not to return. Have you ever experienced waiting in line somewhere while the associate chit chats with others, like you're not even there? You might have a question, but you're stuck, waiting, until they're good and ready to address you? And your inquiry is even brief, but you must wait? This is what it feels like taking a "class" at ArtYard - it's really more like you're renting the studio space for six weeks, which if you had acquired the necessary skills would be fine. I expected an attentive teacher walking around offering encouragement, tips and advice to students, and rooting them on, like the substitute that was there once, he was amazing! However, you must simply wait for a break in the conversation, say please, and not chew gum in class if you'd like help. Or to keep from idling, ask another student for help. One can be talented at what they do, but not have the heart of a teacher. (And yes, I understand that there is a certain amount of trial and error to creating art such as pottery: figuring things out, making your own mistakes, trying, trying again. I get that. I am a designer for a living.) Contacting the instructor - via phone, email or text - was unpredictable, you may or may not get a response. Sadly, I got to the point where I could take "the attitude" no longer: frustrated, upset, and humiliated, I walked out of the second class, and didn't return. And no one with the heart of a teacher would allow that to go unnoticed. But they did.

The result is a truly energized, positive, and uplifting space where imaginations are unleashed. The gallery hosts a wide variety of solo/group art shows throughout the year, featuring work by both Starlight artists and other local painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, and more. Most include live music, food trucks, and some snacks. The quality of the artwork is always outstanding. And supporting the studio's efforts with a purchase (always very reasonably priced) is a double-plus good--you get great art for your home; the studio gets to keep supporting and training these wonderful artists. If you need a serious feel-good, pick-me-up, head to Starlight. I always feel lighter, happier, and more inspired after a visit.

We were also there with another lady…read more Her friend was supposed to also attend the class, but didn't feel well, so Mandi ended up doing the crafts alongside us by making them for the lady who couldn't attend. I thought that was pretty cool. I have been to other craft classes and I don't think I have ever seen the person running the class do the crafts for the person who couldn't attend. We really enjoyed ourselves. We made a welcome sign to hang on your door, and a key holder for your wall. The class was easy to follow and it was relaxed. We were able to take our time and didn't feel rushed at all. This was the first time my mom walked out of a craft class, or painting class, and genuinely had a great time, because we weren't on a time limit. Mandi was extremely helpful. I will definitely be back with a group to take part in more craft nights.
