Took in the sounds of the piano playing and friendly conversations. I've only been to a few churches outside my own Catholic parish so this was very different - a good different. So easy to listen to both Kaui Castillo the leader and aletha kaohi the storyteller. Beautiful singing of Hawaiian songs.

We looked at some options online, and were given some recommendations of churches often visited by guests b/c they feel like the churches back home. We really didn't want that, so we took a chance here by sight only. We felt pulled to visit a smaller Hawaiian church for the cultural experience...and this far exceeded our hopes! The congregation was small, but with big hearts. We felt welcomed immediately. Greeted with kind smiles and hugs, woven leis, and anoles climbing on the walls as they pleased. The doors were open and inviting throughout the service, which was nice for our 1 year old daughter who is all about walking and exploring. The guest pastor was incredible! Not only did he give a heartfelt and beautiful message, but he even invited our 9 year old son up in front of the congregation for a personal message/demonstration on faith where they planted some seeds and had a 1-1 discussion on how God plants seeds of kindness in all of us. The music was captivating, mixing traditional English and Hawaiian hymns, and the prayers were given in English and Hawaiian as well. I can't recommend this place enough. This place has stolen a place in our hearts, and will be our church every time we visit Kauai! Mahalo.

Finally I tried to visit this church and after trying for 2 months, I felt that the pastor in his sermons was more just reading the bible without giving inspiration or motivation to the congregation. If I only listened to Brother Bruce reading the bible, I wouldn't need to come to church and because I have done that (I have finished reading the bible 3 times), one thing that made me want to ask Brother Bruce and I honestly feel that Brother Bruce is not worthy to be a leader pastor, he teaches something that is clearly contrary to Christian teachings, especially the 10 commandments of God, Thou shalt not kill !!!During mass on March 1, 2026, he justified the attack by Israel and America to kill the leader of Iran and also the attack caused the killing of hundreds of school children (they proudly displayed a picture of the Iranian leader with the sentence eliminated,) seeing this I felt disgusted and I asked myself why I was in this building? Is this a church? A pastor rejoices in the murder of someone he may personally hate. If Brother Bruce reads this, I hope he will re-evaluate and rethink the meaning of the Christian faith taught by Jesus Christ. Whatever the reason, there is no justification for murder.

Located in Kalaheo, Holy Cross Catholic Church was founded in 1909. It is part of the diocese of Honolulu, and is one of nine catholic churches on Kauai. There is a cemetery adjacent. Also outside, is a prominent Calvary, more prevalent in European catholic churches. The building is modern, with modern siding and windows. Inside, there is a tile slab baptismal pool, with movable chairs as pews. One area had vigil candles (really LED lights) where one could remember and pray for the dead. Next to it was a Marian shrine with Madonna and Child.

Originally intended to be built from stone, wood won out in the end due to budget constraints. This parish has had some tough times including wind damage, a rectory fire in 1990 that destroyed all records from 1990-1945, and an electric fire in the sanctuary that required major renovation in 2009. When we arrived on a late Sunday afternoon, the church was closed so we stopped off and viewed the different surroundings, making a note to return again for Mass. I've heard that a local sculpture of the Last Supper adorns the front piece of the altar (interested in viewing that). Will try to make a return visit soon. Mahalo for reading my review.
