Impact will forever be so special to me as a Luther alum, I always have to make a stop at Impact when I visit Decorah. The coffee is always delicious, my favorite is their Oatchata, and the food menu is ever growing and evolving, better every time. Their Slammin' Salmon waffle is a must get; the smoked salmon pairs perfectly with their tangy and bright lemon-dill cream cheese. I might've been in a weird mood, but this place has the coolest hangout vibes of any coffee shop I've entered outside of Vienna or London Dropped in recently to send some emails/work while my mom was riding her horse nearby, and what a vibrant spot! Nice open/airy first floor with lots of comfy chairs/couches with different configurations to sit and chill or rendezvous with your work team/friends, etc. There was a dude tying flies in the corner and college kids meeting for a study group, diverse mix of folks. Apparently they have tap beer & wine on nights where they host events like trivia on Thurs or bingo on Fri, cool local artwork featured on the walls Service was great/informative on the drink and bakery items, coffee came out quickly (granted it wasn't super busy), Nitro cold brew was excellent, wifi great, chair was comfy, would drop in anytime I'm in the area to catch up on work, relax with great caffeination, or check out the events they host. Awesome place- a must stop in Decorah Iowa! Coffee is absolutely delicious. I loved the cold brew drinks including the Nitro mocha and the sweet and creamy. The espresso is also delicious, and the barista recommended an Oatchata drink what was fantastic. Each day I was there the baristas were welcoming and made great recommendations. Refuel smoothie (banana, peanut butter, spinach and almond milk) is a great option for the whole family and addictingly tasty! We realized after a few days that they rotate the art, which might be the best part. The counter help was friendly enough There's a limited food menu. The food we tried was above average. Atmosphere was clean, quiet and comfortable. I'd give it a little above a 3 but below a 4. We didn't try any coffee, but it's probably good, so I think I'll call my 3.5 a score of 4 since it is a coffee house. read more

Overpriced and not worth it. I am allergic to dairy and gluten but wanted to try one of their signature drinks. The oat milk they use is not gluten free and so I needed to change the dairy free milk that was already a part of this drink and they charged me $1 for my almond milk. I bought drinks for my mother and me. The total came out to $14 before tip. I can get better coffee and more bang for my buck at Starbucks. Great atmosphere- friendly staff- outstanding coffee shop. Not something you find in a smaller Iowa town. Minneapolis? Sure- Decorah? Not a chance! During my visit the barista absolutely knew what she was doing. My cappuccino was fantastic. Not many can pull off a classic Cortado either. Even if you don't need it get a waffle- no regrets. With the world completely upside down, my husband and I have taken to the road to find our all time favorite coffee shops. It's a really fun and easy way to support local and get a caffeine fix at the same time! We drove up to Decorah and tried this gem. While indoor seating was closed, I really enjoyed the whole "order from the window" thing, especially on a beautiful day! It was easy to stay spaced out and the line moved quickly. One of my favorite things to try at coffee shops (if I stray from my iced vanilla latte) is any unique cold brew flavor. I had the Sweet & Creamy Cold Brew and it was great! A little light on the coffee taste, but that's to be expected I suppose. I would have loved to try the pumpkin spice creamy cold brew, but that's a drink for another day. I'm excited to head back this way when everything settles down a bit eventually because I've heard the inside is really cool. read more

What a wonderful surprise! I thought I was doomed to Folgers or some other nameless, generic coffee during my stay in Decorah, but Impact is anything but an old, run-of-the-mill coffee house. The sandwiches (Peppered Pig was my favorite with ham and chipotle mayo) were prepared with Norwegian crepes instead of bread and are made-to-order so they are served warm and tender while still remaining crispy around the edges! The coffee was strong (macchiato) and flavorful (latte). And for the lacto-phobic (Mrs A), there were several alternatives (oat, almond, etc). The baristas were skilled professional and deserving of grander titles (as one would differentiate a 'bar tender' from a 'mixologist'). Impact knows coffee, and they do coffee very well! read more

Super unique environment! Tons of cozy places to sit. Giant leather recliners, large couches, tables upstairs and down, bar seats overlooking the main road. I'm very thankful to be here during dreary weather. The staff was knowledgeable to dietary restrictions and the chai tea is fairly good. The people next to me are raving about their morning coffees. Beautiful historic building all decked out with cool lighting, lots of comfy seating and the cool coffee shop vibe you'd expect. Oh, and yes the coffee was great too. I wish I had tried the Norwegian waffle sandwiches they featured. The couple I saw looked tasty. Staff was professional but maybe not quite as friendly or chatty as I might have liked. This building has been renewed and, in my lifetime, has never looked better! I love that for how big this venue is- you can still have a very private feel for one on one conversation. The window seats are my favorite for catching the casual buzz of outside downtown (and sunlight) but I have also enjoyed the comfy chairs and upstairs seating. Now, to the coffee! Outstanding. Top Notch. How much fresher can you get? Iced coffee is my favorite for on the go, but the matchas in house are amazing for a warm cup of perfection. I've been in town visiting family for Nordicfest and was just delighted to find this lovely little gem. Absolutely fantastic lattes, perfect temperature and texture with just the right amount of foam. The friendly staff informed me that they make (almost) all their own syrups in house. I stopped in every single morning I was here, making it my own little ritual. The coffee was consistently perfect. Yesterday also I tried one of the pastries in the case, which are from a local bakery. I can vouch for the blackberry lemon ones--scrumptious! I plan to head in one last time on my way out of town tomorrow to have a salted caramel latte for the road, as it really hits that not-too-sweet spot. read more

Might have been a bad day. Might have been busy. But there was no care in making our double cappuccinos. One big huge pitcher of milk for both drinks no texture no microfoam just flat warm milk dumped on the espresso. Such a waste. Too bad. No standards. Kinda cool place though. And roast flavor was probably OK. Couldn't really tell with milk 'steamed' like that. OK, following day. This really is a cool space, tried again on a cappuccino. Still utterly hopeless. Get the pour over. Hard to mess that up. Seriously, one quick well chosen YouTube and everyone in there would know how to steam milk, which no one in there remotely understands now, apparently. Sticking with the 2 stars, because every Starbucks employee is better a steaming milk, which is a pretty pathetic situation, and an unfortunate missed opportunity. OK one more time. Day 3, Monday morning. Not as crowded, thought maybe better coffee because the young woman (college student, I'm guessing) making espresso drinks looked like she was taking care. Tried a cappuccino one more time. Well, it did kind of looked pretty, she had tried to make a nice pattern on top like probably she had seen done at a real coffee shop somewhere, but alas, there was about 1/4 inch of puffy foam on top and absolutely flat milk with no texture whatsoever underneath. Friendly. Unique. Bright. Cool. I never heard of nitro-draft cold brew coffee before and I found the cold brew on tap to be quite enjoyable. The coffee is made in 5 gallon batches and then stored in small kegs (more like the smaller soda kegs than a beer keg). The coffee stays fresh because it's surrounded by nitrogen gas rather than oxygen. Try it, it goes against my experience to have anything but a freshly brewed coffee, but I did like it. I would take away a 1/2 star until they install a wifi for their cute sitting areas. read more

I am often in Decorah and my friend knows that I like coffee. So she bought a 16 oz bag of the Mexico Chiapas FTO for me when she was in town. I tried it for the first time today, and it was some of the worst coffee I have ever tasted. It has a horrible bitter, trashy taste. When I am visiting Decorah, I usually don't go to Impact, but another coffee cafe. But from now on, I will make sure to avoid Impact at all costs. read more
