We came too early the first time so we had to come back after noon. We are glad we did, as the place is quaint and fun. The place is tucked into an older building and has great indoor and outdoor seating options. We skipped the bar this time and opted for the patio. They have a nice selection of interesting beers and sours. We enjoyed them all! Our 2 favorites were the salty dawg and Tingles (amazing). We ended up taking home a couple of 4 packs. Sadly they are gone already! The guys working this day were very friendly and helpful with selections and quick to serve! Such a top notch brewery. Quite a small place, with another private room that you can rent (there was an adult choir rehearsing last time I was there), and a patio. The beer is great here, they really execute each style well. Friendly service too. There are generally a lot of can options to go, make sure to get as many as you can. We're glad we made it here! It's a true blue, funky, chill brewery meant to bring friends together. I love that in winter there are some cozy outdoor igloos to hang out with a date or friends in while warming up with a nice beer. It's easy to make a decision when Bob Marley is crooning in the background, makes me almost want to softly groove up to the bar. I had the S'Mortal Combat, an imperial stout aged in rye and bourbon barrels. It is DIVINE. My only wish is if it would be more than 2 oz. That just means I need to order another! The guy helping us was friendly and encouraged us to ask any questions. There's nice seating, small and large tables, high tops and low, seats around the bar. We were visiting Decorah from Saint Paul and had never heard of this brewery. I'm not sure why, everything we tried on the tap list was delicious. We tried the Porter, Czech Amber Lager, Pilsner, and Saftig IPA (their flagship). I wish we hadn't waited to try this place until our last day in Decorah. If I'm in town again, Pulpit Rock will be a must. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the seating options were unique. I loved the couches made from old barrels. We didn't try the food from the Landing Market next door, but the brewery had QR codes up so you could easily order snacks or a meal if you were hungry. Tip: The brewery might look closed as you walk up from College Drive, but just go left around the building and enter from the patio! read more

Went here for my second time and it did not disappoint. Separate lines for can purchases and drafts made it easy to sit at the bar and drink sample flights. Apparently there was $10 off a case so there were quite a few people there for that, but the staff was friendly and attentive and all had a good time. A weekend trip to Decorah needed to include Toppling Goliath brewery and this lesser known but IMHO, equally quality brewery. I'm a big fan of sour beers and this place had 4 on tap! Typically 1 or 2 at best almost anywhere else you go. Not only did they have the quantity, they had the quality! All were unique, my favorite being one with peaches and muffins--truly those flavors came through in a subtle and satisfying beer. Great outdoor seating and casual environment. What a fun brewery - unfortunately due to Covid19 the taproom is not open, but you can sit on the patio and enjoy their beverages from a can. Their current beer list has quite a few sours (which I love), however my husband on the other hand likes his lagers - in which they only had one. Loved how clean and well run the service was. I can't even begin to explain how much I adore Pulpit Rock Brewery. I'm an out of town-er and would recommend ALL Decorah visitors come here once. To me, it is the ideal place that friends come to in the afternoon and sip and sip and sip and sip until night falls and then all you want to keep doing is keep sitting in this cozy garage drinking more beer. It's quite hip for such a small town. The space feels very urban, a hipster Brooklyn vibe that I really love and seemed very modern and progressive for a small Iowa town. Not what I expected visiting the remote Midwest! Think flannel, brown ales, board games....all the feels. Service was so friendly and the beers were very reasonably priced. Tastings offered. What I most loved about this place is that not every beer is like 14% ABV. I feel like this new brewery trend is forcing brewmasters to make these crazy double IPAs that will literally knock you on your socks after 1.5 beers! All the beers are reasonable ABVs which makes you feel like you can drink them for hours. I loved the Dark English Mild beer. So easy to wash down on a Sunday afternoon. Growlers available for $10. Had my stay been longer, I would have needed to take some home for my nightcap. I can't wait to come back and I will intentionally start to seek out distributors and bars that sell their beer.
