You can hear loud laughter and hollering towards night but the bar closes at 10pm, so it gets quiet again - this was fine for me. The hotel portion is upstairs and there's a back door in the restaurant that takes you right up, as well as a separate side door to come in and out without having to go through the restaurant. My room was my favorite out of the 5 hotels I've stayed at so far in England, including 2 Hilton hotels. High ceiling, beautiful room decor, comfortable bed and pillows, good hot water and room temp, great breakfast, great staff, clean clean clean. No fridge tho. The restaurant serves good food and vegetarian options are available on the menu. I'd look forward to coming back and staying here again! I was lucky enough to be one of a few tables in there so the service was excellent. I am learning that, many bars have you pay at the bar and sit wherever you like. Because my beloved unsweetened iced tea has proved elusive in the UK I chose a Coca-Cola for my beverage. My server asked me if I would like it with "ice and a slice", which made me laugh. It took me a moment to realize she meant a glass of ice and a lemon wedge, which of course I accepted. So I chose my entrée and paid and then sat. The girl who took my order was very pleasant. She brought my food and also checked on me a few times to make sure everything was OK and even offered to change the program on the television since I was the only person in the room. My fish and chips was piping hot and came with an assortment of sauces, including brown sauce, which I had never tried, but that was very good. I tend to read labels, so I was pleased to see that none of the nasty ingredients American food can contain were in it. The fish was cooked to perfection with the crisp of the outside and the tender inside, and the chips were really good. Peas were done perfectly. It came with an ample amount of tartar sauce or at least what I would call it. It was very flavorful. I would definitely recommend this to someone who enjoys a good meal and some live music, which unfortunately I had to miss due to my schedule. It appears they have live music often and the server said it gets busy in the 9pm hour. The cool thing too is that this place is also a hotel so you could stay upstairs as well. I regret I didn't take any additional pictures of the building because it looked historical and had some charm.

Once in the passenger seat, he guided me to the nearest car park and carried my bags back to hotel for me. A service many so called 5star hotels would be hard pushed to emulate. I stayed in the Wordsworth room which was tastefully decorated. A fair sized room with large double bed welcomes and an archway leads off to one side where you'll find a complimentary tea and coffee bar, complete with mineral water. Which you may require after the 2am license. The ensuite was more than generous; His 'n' Hers sinks, full sized bath, lavatory and separate big headed shower/ mini wet room, with rain bars and that.

It attracts a mixed crowd with lots of locals - some of whom were a little worse for wear when we visited, and a bit noisy in a laddish sort of way, which was a pity, as it made the ambience a bit less friendly (and hence dropped to 4 stars).
