The sad truth about BJJ in Manhattan is that it is almost exclusively an adult endeavor. While this is great in that us adults have world class instructors to choose from, this doesn't do much to build the next generation of warriors skilled in the gentle art. Flash forward to my time at The Hive. Professor Chris is doing what we are not doing in NYC - namely, he is building the next generation. And even more important than back takes and armbars, Professor Chris is teaching his young students lessons that will stay with them as they go forward in life - lessons such as the benefit of hard work and adherence to a code of being an honest warrior (bushido). And better than hearing these things from adults that these kids may or may not listen to, these lessons are coming from someone kids most certainly look up to and will listen to. Also the classes are not really categorical: the beginner class has a lot of advanced people. It might be intimidating if you are brand new. I do like how it gives you a feeling of power. Just a PSA though: some of the instructors and students are not vaccinated against COVID and talk about it openly. If you are COVID adverse wear a mask. I am adverse to it and found out later on. I wear a mask and often classes are outside.
