Cheese Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo Special

Decided to try out the neighborhood spot on a cold night & so glad we did! So many options on the menu, but we went classic with chicken tikka & lamb vindaloo with the option for spice level 1-5, my husband chose 4 & was sweating after 5 minutes! The service was attentive, friendly and very gracious - management changed a year ago and this place is doing great! Will definitely be back soon with friends

I've been ordering from this place for years. Once upon a time they use to have really good food! And really good service. Not the case anymore. Ordered my food in person all while being the only person in the restaurant! I waited over a F'k'n hour for my food! And the guy at the counter wanted to keep telling it's the order I ordered saying it's a complicated order then gave me some other BS excuse about the tandoori grill not working all which is not my f'k'n problem especially when every guest that came after me got their food before me!! Like are you kidding me!!! I will never come here again!! After waiting over a hour. I told the guy to give me my money back I'm going else where. After trying to convince me the food was coming he finally gave me my money and as I was leaving he gave me the food for free. Get home to cold food eating and mid way through the meal. Something pokes me in the roof of my mouth!!!! A F'k'n wire in my food!!!! I'm soooooooo pissed!!!! This place should close now!!

The food was excellent! We were very impressed with how flavorful and delicious everything was. We were a bit hesitant at first because the restaurant was completely empty on a Friday night, but I genuinely think word just hasn't gotten out yet about how delicious this place is. The service was very good, they were understaffed but we never felt that we had a long wait for were neglected. The ambiance could use a little work, some low background music would go a long way, the night we were there it was dead silent inside besides various alarms going off. Mohamed was our server, host, and handled everything in the front of house and did a very good job staying on top of everything. They were doing a ton of take out as well, so call or order ahead if that's how you're looking to go.

terrible food and a total scam! They charge me $20 for five cubes of chicken that was supposed to be a chicken tikka, but it was just burnt and under seasoned. There was no curry at all! Never order from them they are trying to scam you! And when I called to speak to the manager, he admitted it was supposed to be five cubes of chicken chicken, which is barely enough to put in your hand. Rude service and terrible disgusting food!

Shoutout to our local community heroes! This is a beautiful venue filled with lots of Love! The hospitality goes way beyond white table cloths, it extends through the tone of voice and professional handling of patrons. Each dish we ordered from appetizers to entrees and onto the desserts were exquisitely crafted. All the spices were balanced, aromatic, and flavorful. The owner spent time with us and personally made us understand and appreciate all the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into making these flavors help Foodie dreams come true! We enjoyed so many of the naan breads and the chewy warm poori bread! The spice levels can be adjusted 0-10 (10 being Indian spicy). My husband is much more adventurous with spicy foods than I. And I was so happy to know that I could order plain yogurt for a terrific accompaniment for flavors and also cool down my palate. Indian kneer (rice pudding) is also a lovely way to end a spicy meal on such a cold winter night.

I've been here a few times and every experience is like the other. The food is decent and the atmosphere is good. White table clothes and dim lighting. What I always experience here, however is the owners are chomping at the bit for one to eat the food and then get out. The restaurant closes at 10 but at 945, the lights got bright and the vacuum started buzzing. The message was clear. It's tacky. I wish they could deal with customers that are buying food, lingering over conversation and having connection over a good meal. Doesn't seem to be the goal for this establishment.

I wasn't even that hungry, but we tried the masala dosa and goat biryani, and both were excellent. I can confidently say this was one of the best dosas I've had. It was crisp, flavorful, and so satisfying, and the goat biryani was delicious too. The chutneys were really good too. This ended up being one of my favorite meals from this trip. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in Philly and craving South Indian food.

This is an expensive restaurant. Let me say that right up front. The cheapest bottle of wine on the…read morelist is a delightful white with notes of lychee, melon, and refreshing acidity. It's about $45, which is a bit pricey for a screw top type wine, but it tasted great, so no issues here. ANYWAY. You're seated in a massive dining room with beautiful furniture, and understated, modern clean lines. There's so many thoughtful touches. The water they give you when you sit down is filtered water. The cutlery is large and generous. The dining tables are set with beautiful stoneware in light colours to complement the food. There was a quiet elegance anywhere you look. We got the murungai (moringa) leaf vada. Vada were crisp on the outside and steamy and varied in texture on the inside. Moringa leaves were bright green. Lots of delicious spices coming up from it. They were presented on a small bed of coconut chatni (which is the traditional accompaniment to vada), and topped with a vividly green fried curry leaf. Why am I mentioning how bright green the moringa leaves and curry leaves are? Because that shows how fresh they are. The banana leaf that it was all perched on wasn't brown on the edges. It was also fresh. These guys had been fried and pulled right out of the oil to come to our table with impeccable presentation. My dining companion got a chicken dish, and I got a vegan onion masala dosa. The cost of the dosa is around double what I'd pay in a hole in the wall dosa shop, but the chicken dish is around what I'd expect to pay at a restaurant. That said, the dosa was one of those massive ones that you'd get at a dosa shop, but cooked to perfection. It was neatly folded into a triangle shape so it fits onto the plate. Coconut, tomato, and peanut chatni is served on the side. Sambhar is also on the side. Chatnis are perfectly made. Sambhar is delicious, with clearly freshly ground spices. Service was prompt, efficient, and extremely friendly. It's the sort of warm welcome you'd get in a South Indian home. People make sure that you're comfortably seated. The make sure that your water glass doesn't sit empty. They notice if you drop a fork or knife by accident, and arrive with a fresh one (because the cutlery is SERIOUS business, and makes a big sound when it drops on the ground). More than that, wait staff are knowledgeable about the food and drinks, and will make suggestions either to you if you're unsure, or to the kitchen to adjust the spice level for your needs. They see to it that you're loving all your food and having a fun time. Genuinely, the meal was pricey, but we had an extremely delicious meal that filled up our stomachs and souls with comfort. We had to waddle back to the hotel afterwards. Yes, you're going to spend a good chunk of change when you're there. However, if you need a place to have a dinner for special occasions, this is the place to go. This is not the typical Indian restaurant with food sat under a heat lamp, drying out the whole time. This isn't a bunch of strong smells lingering the dining room, or coming out of the kitchen. The place is kept spotlessly clean, so that any aromas you're getting are only from the food in front of you. This is Indian food elevated, and given the respect that it deserves. It's how Indian food should be enjoyed: with a reverence for the ingredients, and attention to detail. That said, our appetiser, 2 mains, a bottle of wine, and tax and 20% tip came to like $180 give or take. For the experience we had, I'd say that the money was good value.

It felt like the perfect chance to try some dishes we don't usually order while getting a good deal. Overall, the Restaurant Week menu was a solid value (up to $18 worth of extra food). While the dishes we ordered didn't quite beat our usual favorites, everything was still tasty. The restaurant itself is clean and well ventilated. It's also baby-friendly--they have high chairs, and although it can get a bit loud when busy, our little one didn't seem to mind at all. Big bonus points for convenient onsite parking with validation. It was freezing out, so being able to park and walk right in was a huge plus. The staff were very professional. One dish came out undercooked, and our server fixed it immediately. The Restaurant Week drink specials were just okay--I'd probably skip those next time. Since Thanal is already a regular in our takeout rotation, we'll definitely be ordering again soon. I'd also happily dine in again during the next Restaurant Week.
