Th Lasooni Gobi was amazing and it might be the best Gobi I've had. It was crunchy and chewy- lovedd the texture. The Bhel was good but it became soggy by the time I got home but it's worth the try if you're dining in. Lastly the Lassi- it was perfect, not overly sweet. read more

Curry Leaf should have waaaay more than 11 reviews given the quality and location?! I ordered for takeout yesterday and was blown away by the quality, price, and ease. You can order online for takeout and pay when you walk in, which I really appreciate. I was looking for some standard comfort food, and ordered the garlic naan, butter chicken, lamb saag, and samosa chaat. Every dish I would order again without hesitation. As other reviewers have mentioned, the samosa chaat is an absolute MUST order and a total steal at less than $6. The butter chicken is tender and indulgent as can be, and the saag dish could feed a family of 5. I loved the lamb but would also try this with chicken or the classic paneer in the future. Naan was great for takeout (folded in a parchment paper then foil) and I would order two if you're more than two people. Large portions of basmati rice are complimentary with entree. Curry Leaf is a BYO and the inside is pretty bare bones, so not a place you would go for ambiance - a few tables if you want to sit and enjoy your meal. The bulk of their business is clearly takeout, and the staff was so warm and helpful when I showed up to grab my order. This is dangerously close to my home and rehearsal spaces, so I know I'll be back time and time again for that delicious chaat and other great looking dishes on the menu. Add it to your rotation! After seeing all of the glowing reviews for Curry Leaf, and since it is literally around the corner from my apartment, I opted to give it a shot for a weekend takeout dinner. I am by no means whatsoever a connoisseur of Indian cuisine, so I wasn't really sure what to order. The menu is extensive, and a little intimidating for a person who has no idea what a bhaji or a choat is. I took one recommendation from Megan C.'s review, the Samosa Choat, and I chose the Chicken Malai Kabob for meat. The dishes come with a tin full of jasmine rice, cooked perfectly. To echo the many other reviews, the whole meal was a flavor explosion! The only thing I didn't like was the Onion Bhaji, which they threw in for free. They were some sort of fried pancake, which sounded like it could have been good, but it was overcooked. But the rest of the meal? Wow! The portions are great, too! I have literally passed Curry Leaf hundreds of times in my travels and hardly ever took much notice of the place. The front is very unassuming and the inside is simple and small, but clean. The gentleman who greeted me at the register was pleasant enough. I got there a little early, so I had to wait a few minutes, and as I was there, several Uber eats delivery guys and a couple of customers came in to pick up their orders. Definitely more popular than I imagined it to be! Obviously it's the food that brings people to Curry Leaf and I now know what a bhaji and a choat are. The food from this little hole in the wall was amazing. Somosa chaat was delicious. It had texture and crunch and flavor that was perfect. The fried cauliflower had the perfect amount of heat and still had great snap The lamb biriyani was delicious as well. Please be careful that it does not specify that it has nuts unless you ask. The lamb had no gaminess, meaning it was marinated for a while. The porata was a little underwhelming but the naan was good. The chili chicken was great. Unfortunately, I tried getting the spicy version and regretted it. But that's on me. I definitely had the runs for the next 24 hours cause my stomach couldn't deal with the heat. It's a Nepali & Indian spot right in Center City, low-key and welcoming. Ambiance: Cozy, casual, and clean--tables are close enough to feel lively but not cramped. Lighting's soft, music at a chill volume, and it's the kind of place where you can actually talk. Nothing fussy; just the good stuff. Food: the garlic naan...insane. Blistered edges, pillowy middle, tons of garlicky bite--outrageously good. (They list Garlic Naan on the menu, and it lives up to the hype.) Mains were deeply flavored without being heavy--sauces tasted freshly built, bright spices, and you can tell they care about balance. Prices are super reasonable for Center City: naan around $6-7 and classic curries ~ $19-20, and the portions are big--one entrée plus naan easily fed two of us with leftovers. Service: Friendly and fast without hovering. Water refills kept coming, food landed hot, and they checked spice prefs without me asking. Felt like they actually wanted me to love what I ordered. I really don't know how they can call this true Indian. I read the reviews pryor to going to this location and they were all great reviews. The reviews had to be done by the owner or owners friends as my experience was not even close to what others had written. With that here is what I experienced. I ordered Chicken Madras, Aloo Gobi and Roti. They food came and they brought me Chicken Korma. I let them know that this is not what I ordered. They told me, yes sir that is Chicken Madras. Ive eaten Indian food in India, the UK and frankly all around the world and It was nothing that I have ever seen in my whole life. They offered me another dish so I ordered Chicken Vindaloo. When the dish came it did not look right as well. I tasted it and it was nothing that I have ever tasked. It was not even close to being anything like Vindaloo. The Curry Leaf is not a good place to eat The Aloo Gobi was ok but nothing special. The Roti was the best thing about the meal Do yourself a favor. Try another Indian restaurant. None of that nonsense where every curry tastes vaguely the same instead of how it should. The korma is rich and delicious. You can literally taste the saffron. I ordered through Ubereats tonight and got the mango chicken which was delicious. Often the chicken in Indian food is dry. That wasn't the case here. When I order from there again (and I will), I'll probably try the butter chicken, the curry chicken, or the chicken tikka masala, just to try something different. But, the baingan bharta, was very bland, with hard things(?) in it. For that, I'll stick with Taste of Punjab, where their baingan bharta is the best I've had. read more

If you don't like "food porn", don't read on because this place gave me a full on food orgasm, more on that later. I'm in Philly, for a day trip, so not really looking for Indian, really wanted to do cheese steak, but I'm hungry and it's next door to a vintage shop I was just in. I look place up and the reviews are really high, so I decide to give it a chance, but not overeat so I can go to other places later. I order an appetizer and bread, and I'm glad I did! The lamb sekuwa was so damn tasty and succulent, and they asked how long I wanted it cooked (rare, well done, very spicy, mild, etc) the only complaint is it was a dry dish, but they gave me spices and there are plenty of dishes with sauce. It was wonderful walking through Philly as night fell with that taste in my mouth, but many a person pbly got the wrong idea with sounds of satisfaction and me muttering "oh my god, mmmm, sooo good, wonderful", and I can't blame them if they steered clear and gave me wide berth. The flaky bread (Lacha Paratha) was also interesting, but also a dry sort of thing, but I had the spices to help. Let me also add, how accommodating the host was, giving me a free bottled water, helping me to charge my phone etc. This place was small but comfy, private feeling and off the beaten path. I am not a local to Philly, so it's not like, "it was near and the best of its kind near me"-its way off and way worthwhile. I reallllly hope to find its kind back in NYC. I passed it earlier this week walking on Sansom and thought it was new so I ordered take out online from their website. I got the butter chicken and plain naan. It was reasonably priced and the butter chicken was amazing! The chicken breast was tender and not dried out and the sauce was good too. The plain naan was ...plain...so I'll probably try the garlic naan next time. They have a few tables for dine in but it's not a fancy sit down spot but if you're cool with casual, they have that option as well. Small place that is perfect for takeout or a casual meal. The food is obviously made with love and care. My takeout included a note on the papadum package so as not to crush the delicate crisps. The food itself is absolutely delicious. I'm so glad that I chose this place to satisfy my craving for curry. Ordering tip: call in ahead instead of using the online system and it will be faster.
