There are a handful of Indian restaurants in the Porto center, and Thali is one of the more "expensive" ones. They also open at 7pm, so if you're ravenous like I was, you're definitely tested with the wait! I ordered a garlic naan with mushroom paneer, and the portions were indeed tiny for the cost! I gobbled up my paneer within minutes, and of course did not have naan to scoop everything up. At least they were not afraid to add the spice---it was the spiciest Indian food I've had in Southern Europe thus far!

My sister is a vegetarian and this place didn't disappoint. They brought a tray of 3 chutneys and thin bread to start. Next we ordered veggie samosas which were really delicious especially with the sauces! My sister ordered spinach paneer. It is the only place in Porto where they make their on paneer in house and she said it was amazing! I ordered the chicken tika hot and to be honest it wasn't hot at all but it was very delicious. Tip- entrees don't come with rice so, order on the side (maybe this was specified on the menu and we missed it). Garlic naan was delicious and massive quantity. Don't be fooled by the empty restaurant. Food was fantastic, wine was cheap -- and the view - just breath taking (sit outside)!

I didn't actually see paratha (or rice) on the menu but they have it. It was pretty decent. The curry wasn't what I used to from my experiences with Indian food in the US and Delhi but I'll give the benefit of the doubt that there's some regional thing I'm missing. That said, the curry sauce was a bit too greasy in my opinion. One sterling item was the chai. I loved it. Even got a second cup. Service was okay. They were eager to please and kind. Wanted to try Indian food in Portugal!…read more I took a fairly large group (~10 people) to this restaurant during a peak lunch hour and was seated immediately with no reservation! The restaurant is located on a beautiful multicolored and "hilly" street. Nice walk from the park nearby! The waiters were very nice and helped people who hadn't been to an Indian restaurant before or didn't understand what the different dishes consisted of. I would recommend the mango or salt lassi to start with. You don't and probably shouldn't order an individual dish for each person in your party (portions are big and it is meant to be shared family style). We only ordered four dishes and a ton of Naan and Roti for our group of ten people (we walked out of the restaurant stuffed). Oh and yes try the cheese naan! My only gripe with the restaurant was that when we got there they said that they would take credit card but then when paying the bill they said that they actually don't. It wasn't that big of a concern because we ended up having enough euros to cover the bill, but just caught us a little blind-sided. Maybe their machine just broke or something. All in all, I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area and want to try Indian food in Portugal :). It honestly was pretty close to the real deal- I was impressed!

The restaurant wasn't busy that night so I believe our servers were the owners, so, naturally, the service was very attentive. We were seated at a table by the window at the front of the restaurant so we didn't really see much more of the inside. Our table was close to the entrance so on a busier night, it might not have been ideal. However, on this night it allowed us to have a nice chat with the owner/chef who told us he had worked in restaurants around the world, including the US. His enthusiasm for preparing the dishes was evident and he boasted that his good benefited from the added ingredient of love. It wasn't the easiest place to find, with our respective GPS signals going haywire as we hiked above the local cell towers; but, alas, we found this "hole-in-the-wall" on a narrow street. The interior (as it is with a number of restaurants we've been to here in Portugal) is nondescript from the outside with a lot more "expansive" interior. They've got a lovely outdoor eating area, as well, and since it was such a beautiful day, we ate alfresco. The owner/chef (??) informed us that they only serve a daily prix-fixe meal, which was fine by us since we were hungry and just went with the flow. There's no alcohol served, so we opted for Cokes. Interestingly, the soup AND dessert arrived first, and since it was a warm afternoon, the creamy frosting on the dessert started to melt before the main arrived. (I started eating mine right away. Lol!) The soup was delicious; dense carrot-like cake dessert was yummy, too. Shortly after the first course came the main, which consisted of an empanada, a side of rice and a side of carrots/cauliflower/peas in a tomato-based sauce. (The owner/chef spoke very little English, so I'm guessing as to ingredients; we just ate it all up because it was all very satisfying. Price for the prix-fixe was excellent, too!) Both the owner/chef and gent manning the upstairs checkout were friendly. If you find yourself in close proximity to O Oriente no Porto, and need some food without breaking-the-bank, check them out...!
