    The local spot

So every day from our crap AirBnB at about 5 pm or 13:00hr, we smell chicken roasted/ or bbq grilled. It smells like summer in the park where families are picnicking and bbqing on open grills. So today I decided to literally follow my nose. I knew it was the street behind us but wasn't sure for certain so looked it up (sorry blasphemy about to be committed) on google maps and bam! The only restaurant that would likely be a candidate. It was raining so I never bothered to look in the window or read the menu, the smell and Hurd of folks in there was confirmation enough. I spied to spots at the bar in the back so we snagged em. Service was really warm and friendly. We met the owner, Roberto, along with grandma grandpa, aunts, uncles, nieces, and cousins... a total family affair! All busy serving, cleaning, pouring and a bit of kibitzing as this is a busy local place. Did you think I'd opt for something other than the half bbq chicken? Served with fries, rice and a super bock! Brilliant. So tender and flavorful was that bird, yep suck the bones good! We chatted up the very personable owner Roberto about the world, about travel this and that. Very affordable, local fare made with love and fresh ingredients. So reasonable warm. Definitely coming back again and bringing whomever we have in tow!

Whole chicken plate, beefsteak plate and arroz de mariscos

Love to find hole in the wall spots. While looking for a place to eat, this spot was poppin with folks going in! We didn't opt to go out first try passing since we were really hungry. However, we did return the next day. It was around 2:30pm and it was still a full house. We got a seat within 10 minutes but it took another 20 minutes to flag down someone to place an order. We opted to share a whole chicken plate, beefsteak plate and an arroz de mariscos (think rice stewed in tomato sauce + some seafood) They offer bread for the table while you wait. It was another 15-20 minutes to get our food. The chicken was crispy on exterior and fall off the bone tender. The beefsteak was tasty. The arroz de mariscos offered a satisfying taste for a saucy rice to pair with the roast chicken. All in all, try it if you can! This was more than enough food, we could probably have been good with half chicken. For lunch for two, it was good portion and value prices!

Figured we should try some local Portuguese food so decided to eat at Churrascaria Lameiras. We dropped in on a Friday (6:30pm). A mix of locals (at the bar) and tourists. Servers are older folk but one waiter spoke some English. There's a short, condensed English menu. The Portuguese menu has dessert options. Also saw three types of salad (ie. octopus) right when we walked in. - Vinho da casa (2,80€ for 0.37L) - light, easy drinking green wine. - Caldo verde (1,30€) - tasted like collared greens blended with potato. Homey and a surprisingly deep bowl. - Sopa des legumes (1,30€) - a slightly better (homemade) version of Chunky's soup. - 1/2 Frango de churrasco (4,60€) - white pieces of chicken were dry. Desperately needed sauce. Rice was plain, fries soggy. - Bacalhau à brás (4,50€) - one of the daily specials. Olives were salty. Salted cod was a mixed bag. Too heavy and one-dimensional. Can't beat the prices. Filling, cheap food at CL.

The focus here is on rotisserie chicken; they have other items but they're not the main event. It's very big inside, 2 stories and even early it's pretty busy. The chicken is well seasoned and very juicy; enough so that you know why it's So popular. Sides I can barely remember , but everything else was good- it's just that you will Always remember that chicken! Other than that, my only other clear memory of that dinner is that it was very reasonably priced. If I were in the area again, I'd return in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

As I came in on my own I opted for the one open stool at the counter. The restaurant was busy on a Monday early evening, about 5:30-6:00 pm-ish, with what felt like mostly locals. They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.

The easiest way to make a reservation is to call. The gentleman who answered my call was so nice and very accommodating when I needed to push back our seating time. From the minute you walk in, you are greeted with warmth and genuine care. We started off with the croquettes and then ordered the rib eye to share with a side of the chorizo rice. The croquettes were amazing and flavorful. The rib eye was phenomenal!! Our server sliced it for us and plated the slices on our plate. It was very well seasoned. The chorizo rice comes in a cast iron skillet and was delicious as well! For dessert we went with the recommendation for the salted caramel pie. This was one of the best desserts I have had in a long time. It was so good and a must have for dessert! I absolutely loved my experience at Bota&Bira from the quality of the food to the amazing hospitality we received. It is a Porto staple and I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for meat lovers!

I'm a big fish eater but I wasn't going to pass up a good steak. We ordered the Tomahawk Steak medium.. it was cooked a little less than medium but whatever it was a great steak. They showed us the steak before they cooked it. It was a great cut of meat. The steak was flavorful we enjoyed it so much. We also ordered garlic prawns, mushroom truffle croquettes and French fries. All fantastic. Of course we paired it with red wine because why not. The staff were super friendly, accommodating, and energetic. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys beef.

I looked up LSD and we headed for it. Our immediate inclination was to sit outside and my friend approached a member of staff. He brusquely told my buddy that we would have to talk to the manager. Everyone was moving quickly and the outside was pretty full. The manager came over and said it would be at least a 45minute wait. After the curtness of the initial contact and the wait time, we paused. I asked about seating inside and the manager said he was short staffed asked if we were in a hurry. I said we didn't mind waiting if we could have drinks. He said for sure and sat us in the cool of the inside. We ordered a pitcher of sangria; he recommended the special which was light and refreshing. Delicious! The pictures show everything we ordered and there was not a single disappointment in the bunch. One note, the white fish and rose shrimp crude is a cold dish; very light, refreshing and full of flavor. As we were about to order dessert, we saw them serve the smoked salmon to another table and since more than one of us had been eyeing it, we ordered one. So glad we did. All the desserts were perfect. We also had a nice white wine and a pair of old fashioneds to round out the meal. The staff were moving throughout and it was the best dining experience we had in Porto! Highly recommended.
