We have been enjoying visiting this local used book store, roughly once a month. They got us hooked…read moreon a series of books, and we keep stoping by to see if they have the next one in the series available. After all, the library does not have absolutely everything! The store is following COVID protocols. The staff is warm and friendly, and knowledgeable. They have oodles of books, with a kids section of the shop, as well as a variety of movies. Recently, because of the holidays coming up, they have been selling groups of a dozen books all individually wrapped, as an "advent calendar" of books, containing such things as Archie comics. To encourage kids to read. This book store has a Facebook page as well, to advertise what they are doing in the wss as y of special events. And watch for the adorable guard-cat :-)

I'm not sure if the guy behind the counter is the owner or not but he was very kind and helpful. I penned him down for about 10 minutes asking him to search his database for four different books, which he did with a smile the entire time. If they don't have it, they can order it for you. Also, if you register with them you earn store credit with every dollar you spend, which in a store like this is dangerous motivation. More dangerous motivation is that the prices are fairly reasonable. If I lived here, I'd be in that store weekly. If you're a bibliophile, go! They have a good selection on the shelves. And they have a knowledgeable staff that can make recommendations. So I had no expectations. But to my surprise, I discovered a boutique with great selection and price. I bought a magnificent cooking book for 35$. Also the place is gorgeous, that's in itself a treat.

There's also a selection of books for display at the front of the store with a deal going on: usually "$5 each, 3 for $10". The only point of concern is security, as it seems fairly susceptible to theft.

At the front of the shop is an espresso bar that offers lots of tasty treats and alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. I got a oat milk cappuccino and a small chocolate mint cookie. Arlie's is a place I always check out when I'm in the Westport-Perth-Smith Falls area, just off the main drag in Smiths Falls. It has a terrific selection of books in a wide variety of genres - westerns, mysteries, sci-fi/fantasy, biographies, just about everything - and of course a special section on local/Ontario history. Remarkably, the store has expanded since I first visited, nearly doubling in size. I do wish that the opening hours were a little longer, but I make an effort to get there whenever I'm in the area.

They have board games/card games and they have toys too, including Celestial Buddies, which are plushies of planets, moons and all things, well... celestial, lol. I especially liked the Saturn plushie. They have "Every Child Matters" stuffed bears as well. They have really cool bookmarks (I especially liked the Spaghetti and Meatballs bookmark). They have earrings that are book covers! Perfect for the bibliophile in your life who also loves jewelry (and has their ears pierced). The bookstore is very open and not cluttered at all. They had some shelves still empty when I went the first week of November 2023, so I think they will be getting more merchandise. Prices are comparable to other regular bookstores. No bargain basement prices, but no huge markup for being in trendy Westboro, lol. Staff are friendly and pleasant. They leave you alone to browse, which I like, but seemed helpful with other customers who needed help (I did not need help, so did not interact too much with staff). Great place to pick up gifts.
