I went here for a bite last night and got the fusion salad box. Now I like salad, and I absolutely adore vegetables... but this was almost like barnyard style. I felt like a horse at pasture. Not that it tasted terrible... but the sensation of chewing it was the same as what I imagine you would have trying to eat a live fern that had (tasty) vinaigrette poured on. I'm sure I could have chosen better... but this is what I got and that's what I'll review on! Prices are decent, friendly service and free wifi. I'm definitely going back but will try something else.

Incredible and very spicy tofu Korean taco! $4!!
    Ben B.

Obligatory 'I just had Korean Tacos and freaked the freak out' Update: I've decided that Indochine Banh Mi is more like an addiction than a lunch option for me. When I'm 'on' Indochine, it's all I can think about and I end up sneaking in wearing disguises in hopes of the staff not worrying about my well-being. When I'm 'off' Indochine, it's simply because friends have intervened or I have fought the cravings off long enough to regain my self-control. But after trying their new Korean tacos, keeping 'off' Indochine just got a lot harder. I still love their Buddha bowls but now that the tacos have arrived, the banh mi is totally dead to me. I first had awesome Korean tacos in Portland (OR) and fell in love. Now that they're in Halifax, I'm afraid I just don't have room for other lunchtime sammies. Small enough to justify eating several, but big enough that one could tie you over for a light lunch, these tacos are my jam. Soft tortillas packed with spiced Asian coleslaw, pickled daikon, cucumber, beansprouts, citrus mayo and sriracha sauce plus your choice of Bulgogi marinated beef, chicken or tofu? At just $4 a pop? There is literally nothing better. Spice warning: I was sweating. But in a totally good way.

This place seems to have sprung up overnight, like the spring blooms in the neighboring Public Gardens. I popped in today like a tulip shooting forth from the earth, and was informed that they've been open now for three weeks (I'm working with a mega urge to constantly use botanical metaphors - bare with me). There was a bit of a line, but the three smiling women had everyone served and snacking in no time flat. My lovely pal and I opted to share a Buddha sandwich, topped with marinated tofu, daikon, citrus mayo, and other fresh ingredients. The sammy was warm and flavorful, with a perfect fusion of simple and tasty ingredients. They serve another grand looking vegetarian sandwich; a TVP meatball sub, and as well serve a plethora of meat and seafood options. Their featured bevies are rich and fruity looking bubble teas of the mango, coconut, kiwi, pineapple persuasions. These thick drinks weigh in at about $5 but look like they'd satisfy a peckish hunger. I'm very impressed with this new locally conscious sammy shop. They've working to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices and are making an effort to procure local products when possible. I can't wait to get back in to try the veggie meatball treat.

    chicken Satay

-update a week later- The good news: the chicken satay is even more awesome than the lemongrass. The bad news: I changed my flying bid, and after a return trip to Halifax tomorrow- I won't be back in town until at least the fall. I may have to start scoring YHZ layovers just to get more of these subs...

I've liked going here in the past. My sister used to live in Halifax and introduced me before she moved away. She's a vegan, so this place has lots of veg options, apparently their sandwiches are just amazing - but I've never had one. I usually drop in when I'm in the area for bubble tea. This past Friday I was sitting in some particularly awful traffic after having been called downtown late in the day. I decided to drop by to wait out the traffic a bit. I ordered the mango peach (hindsight: 20/20, not a great combo) bubble tea, and hopped back in the car. First sip, tapioca pearls are crunchy - undercooked. After spending over $5 and anticipating a great on-route home snack, I ended up trying to consume it a few more times and, ultimately, it ended up not even 1/4 finished in my trash bin. Very disappointing, guys. If you're after bubble tea, keep heading downtown to Inglis!

the tofu banh mi with NO TOPPINGS.. one sad lonely carrot

Ordered three Banh Mi's and they forgot all the toppings on the Tofu Banh Mi .. no pickled onions, carrots, or birds eye chilli's? had none of the flavour that makes a Banh Mi so delicious! The other two sandwiches were loaded with toppings which makes it even more bizzare. Paid $12 for a baguette with tofu and mayo...... extremely disappointed.

I love Bubble Tea! This place is a true gem in Nova Scotia! I ordered my bubble tea and the mixture of Coconut and Strawberry is only a combination a girl can dream of. So if your ever in this lovely town please check it out. The thing I liked about this bubble tea is that it is a healthy version so I could actually taste the strawberry. I thoroughly enjoyed my refreshing drink.

The patio is beautiful, with cozy fire pits right by the water--such a great vibe for an evening out. The drink menu is solid, too. I really enjoyed my craft beer, and my wife was happy with her cocktail--both were well made and refreshing. We didn't go all in on a full meal, but we did try one of their more unique appetizers--the salmon cigar. It sounded creative and caught our attention, so we gave it a shot. Unfortunately, it just wasn't our thing. My wife liked it a bit more than I did, but even she wasn't fully sold on it. That said, props to the kitchen for taking risks and trying something different--you can tell there's thought and ambition behind the menu. All in all, we didn't love our experience, but we still respect what Sea Smoke is doing, and would love to come back someday and give the full dinner a proper try when our budget allows it!

The place is spacious, and the buffet looked super appetising. We were asked to sit anywhere, so we sat near the window. Getting our food, we chose a lot of the seafood, salad, tried some of the different styles foods, and of course- the Chinese part of the buffet. The shrimp in shell were not de-veined, and the tempura shrimp tasted like it was paste. The crab was cooked well, and the fish in batter was cooked nicely. The fruit and ice cream were the saving grace, as they had the regular jellos, cookies, and small sweets. They didn't have seafood sauve, only replaced with spicy Mayo and some weird sweet chili sauce. The choices with the Chinese foods were cooked amazingly, and the noodles weren't soggy or super dry. The price was 20$ a person, and even with the 5$ coupon, came to 18 and change. Not really the price range I would expect from a smaller buffet area. View was gorgeous, and the staff were prompt and courteous. I will definitely be going back.

However when I was going to pay my bill, the cashier charged me $50 and a $1.49 sauce fee. The reason was that the this kind of meal must be ordered for two people and once it was ordered by one people, double price was charged. Neither signs of this regulation could be found on the page of this meal nor I was informed by the waitress. I could say this restaurant lied to me because I was told by the waitress that the sauce fee was included but still I was charged. For a moment I wanted to call the police, but since this is the New Year's Eve and I don't want my mood ruined by quarrel. I will never go to this restaurant again and I suggest readers of this review please do pay more attention on the price of this restaurant. Halifax is beautiful, no doubt--but if you're someone who needs a kick of chili in your food (and your soul), the city can feel like a spice desert. Enter Pho Maniac. We spotted it thanks to the red chili-laced photos plastered on the window. That alone was enough to pull us in. And thank god we did--because this place delivers on heat. Not the mild, tamed-down-for-tourists kind either. Real spice. Actual flavor. The food scene in Halifax is trying to grow, but let's be honest--it's mostly tailored for white folks and cruise ship passersby. If your palate grew up on sambal, Sichuan, or scotch bonnets, most of this city will leave you unbothered and unsalted. But Pho Maniac? A mirage turned real. The place was packed with Asian diners and the one off-white wanderer who knew what's up. That's always a good sign. The broth? Deep, rich, and fiery. It hits the spot you forgot Halifax had. I still couldn't see myself living here long-term--because spicy food is non-negotiable--but at least Pho Maniac made the week feel less bland. In a city of boiled lobster and beige seasoning, this little joint reminded me my taste buds were still alive.
