All fine, flavours were good, but the dish was heavy on the salad and pretty light on the noodles. The shrimp were good, but the cut up roll was kind of ordinary. Had a smoothie bubble tea ($5.50) at Indochine Banh Mi and it was pretty good. You can choose up to 3 flavours for your smoothie, so I got mango, coconut and pineapple. The tapioca pearls were soft and chewy and didn't get all hard because of the coldness of the drink (which sometimes happens at some places). The smoothies are dairy-free, so it wasn't as creamy, but it was blended smooth and tasted good (although a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt in it would have made it better, lol). Service was friendly and efficient. I was tempted by their lobster roll special for $8, maybe next time :) Their Banh Mi looked good too. read more

Since my last review I feel like something has happened to the pho. The last time I ordered some it tasted super bland! I got it to take out which I don't normally do so I don't know if that had something to do with it but it was pretty disappointing. I do still really like the Banh Mi though, even despite the spice factor ;) The still have disposable dishes, though they are now all recyclable rather than icky styrofoam. Exquisite food, I've come here many times and they never disappoint. I've tried most things in the menu and the taste and quality is always consistent. I'd recommend the chicken phorrito or chicken banh mi, I've enjoyed them the most. If you enjoy spicy foods then you will enjoy what they have to offer. Always giving you the option to make your food spicy. Their juice with boba is to die for, definitely my fav place on a hot day to get a drink. I went here for a bite last night and got the fusion salad box. Now I like salad, and I absolutely adore vegetables... but this was almost like barnyard style. I felt like a horse at pasture. Not that it tasted terrible... but the sensation of chewing it was the same as what I imagine you would have trying to eat a live fern that had (tasty) vinaigrette poured on. I'm sure I could have chosen better... but this is what I got and that's what I'll review on! Prices are decent, friendly service and free wifi. This is a small lunch place for Thai food. They specialize in Thai sandwiches but also have other items as well. Like spring rolls. The problem is the spring rolls, rather than being light rice paper wrapped made while you waited are reheated greasy deep fried rolls withoutmuch flavour. Their spring roll soup just has these rolls added cut up. If you don't want something with bread or spring rolls there is not much else. Tried the soup. Broth was good but the rest was surprisingly tasteless despite putting in the sauces provided. read more

Obligatory 'I just had Korean Tacos and freaked the freak out' Update: I've decided that Indochine Banh Mi is more like an addiction than a lunch option for me. When I'm 'on' Indochine, it's all I can think about and I end up sneaking in wearing disguises in hopes of the staff not worrying about my well-being. When I'm 'off' Indochine, it's simply because friends have intervened or I have fought the cravings off long enough to regain my self-control. But after trying their new Korean tacos, keeping 'off' Indochine just got a lot harder. I still love their Buddha bowls but now that the tacos have arrived, the banh mi is totally dead to me. I first had awesome Korean tacos in Portland (OR) and fell in love. Now that they're in Halifax, I'm afraid I just don't have room for other lunchtime sammies. Small enough to justify eating several, but big enough that one could tie you over for a light lunch, these tacos are my jam. Soft tortillas packed with spiced Asian coleslaw, pickled daikon, cucumber, beansprouts, citrus mayo and sriracha sauce plus your choice of Bulgogi marinated beef, chicken or tofu? At just $4 a pop? This place seems to have sprung up overnight, like the spring blooms in the neighboring Public Gardens. I popped in today like a tulip shooting forth from the earth, and was informed that they've been open now for three weeks (I'm working with a mega urge to constantly use botanical metaphors - bare with me). There was a bit of a line, but the three smiling women had everyone served and snacking in no time flat. My lovely pal and I opted to share a Buddha sandwich, topped with marinated tofu, daikon, citrus mayo, and other fresh ingredients. The sammy was warm and flavorful, with a perfect fusion of simple and tasty ingredients. They serve another grand looking vegetarian sandwich; a TVP meatball sub, and as well serve a plethora of meat and seafood options. Their featured bevies are rich and fruity looking bubble teas of the mango, coconut, kiwi, pineapple persuasions. These thick drinks weigh in at about $5 but look like they'd satisfy a peckish hunger. I'm very impressed with this new locally conscious sammy shop. They've working to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices and are making an effort to procure local products when possible. I may not be a banh mi expert, but I do know what I like, and I like Indochine and their namesake dish. I went here for a light lunch with my girlfriend on a lovely first day of spring. With a prime location just off Spring Garden and across from the as-yet-unopened Public Gardens, Indochine definitely has the 'location location location' mantra nailed. I go for their pho and 1/2 sandwich deal so that I can try a chunk of their small but delicious sounding menu. I settle on the beef pho and spicy BBQ chicken banh mi, and after a few short minutes, my banh mi cherry is ready to be broken. My banh mi isn't large, but packs a flavour punch with the spicy of the chicken, the pickled yet crunchy veggies and the powerful cilantro. I'm gonna have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of fresh cilantro in these quantities as I find it somewhat overpowering, but like my ethnicity. I'm probably in the minority here. The pho is hearty with tender beef and crunchy bean sprouts, and a broth that is rich and not too salty. A refreshing start to my day, I'm looking forward to many other nice spring days where I can fill up on more of their menu. I'm looking at you, Korean tacos. I'm gonna eatcha. read more

I've liked going here in the past. My sister used to live in Halifax and introduced me before she moved away. She's a vegan, so this place has lots of veg options, apparently their sandwiches are just amazing - but I've never had one. I usually drop in when I'm in the area for bubble tea. This past Friday I was sitting in some particularly awful traffic after having been called downtown late in the day. I decided to drop by to wait out the traffic a bit. I ordered the mango peach (hindsight: 20/20, not a great combo) bubble tea, and hopped back in the car. First sip, tapioca pearls are crunchy - undercooked. After spending over $5 and anticipating a great on-route home snack, I ended up trying to consume it a few more times and, ultimately, it ended up not even 1/4 finished in my trash bin. Now, I am giving a 3 simply because I am reviewing it for the drink and the beef noodle only and keep in mind that this is Halifax and not Toronto or Vancouver. To be fair, I have not tried their vietnamese sandwich which I believe is what they claim to be specialize in. If it was not for the noodle, I would have rated it higher - by an additional half star (unfortunately Yelp doesn't have 1/2 star feature). Sitting just at the other end of Smiling Goat (a coffee house), Indochine Banh Mi offers an alternative to Iced Coffee for those in need of a cooling drink to quench their thirst on a typical hot summers day (on in my case, a hot spring day). The bubble tea they produce does live up to its name and the pearl (bubble) adds to the excitement for every single slurp. Have 2 at a go or more, whatever makes you roll, the bubble would give you something to chew while you cool down under the hot sun. I had a fairly traditional pork meatball banh mi, and it was excellent, very good balance of flavors, a good sized sandwich and a nice crusty baguette. In fact, it was so good I went back a couple of days later, only to run into a Vietnamese colleague of mine having a sandwich of his own and savoring their pho which he said was quite good... I decided to try this place out for the first time... on my birthday, for lunch. Big mistake. I had chicken pho and a strawberry smoothie. About two hours later I ended up rushing to the bathroom, and staying for most of my special day. Had to cancel reservations for the restaurant Primal, and generally felt very sad reading all the 'happy birthdays' on my facebook wall... all while confined in my bathroom. ADDICTIVE! This is a gem of a place. My favourite, the Korean Tacos! 1 for $4 or 2 for $7.50, you absolutely can not go wrong! My favourites are the fish taco and chicken, but really, they're all delish! Fresh sprouts, carrots, cucumber, toasted tortilla (and they have a gluten free option) all dressed with a sauce that is the perfect balance of hotness and tastiness... OH MY! I might have to run up and get one now :) Their Banh Mi's are equally as good. Served on a fresh, toasted baguette with a choice of white or multi grain, the bread offers an exquisite balance of crispiness on the outside and that soft fresh bread texture we'll all learned to love! The pork meatball Banh Mi is absolutely to die for. If you're in the mood to try a little bit of everything, you can go for their Taco/Pho or 1/2 Banh Mi/Pho combo (under $9 folks!!! perfect lunch or light diner). They also have a great selection of vermicelli bowls/plates and their new organic mint lemonade is perfect for a hot day! The restaurant is quite small, only seating 12-15 people inside BUT, they have quite a few outdoor tables set up. And, lets get real folks! What better way to spend your lunch hour on a sunny day then to grab a couple tacos and walk across to the public gardens! I have been nervous to write this review and give justice to this glittering jewel of Halifax cuisine. Always nervous of Vietnamese food, I was urged by a friend to give it a try, and within a week, I had made 5 trips for lunch. Since then, I have tried every meat sandwich on the menu as well as the noodle bowls, smoothies, and new Korean tacos. I have never had a banh mi better. Anywhere. The new spicy bbq chicken on a whole wheat bun is my favourite, but I also highly recommend the pineapple beef and pork meatball subs. What is a banh mi exactly? You can't really call it a submarine sandwich as that is trivializing it... Picture a warm baguette bread (in either white or wheat), piled with the meat or veggie option of your choice, and smothered in pickled daikon, shredded carrot, and cucumber with a squeeze of citrus mayo. For a lighter option, there is the Korean taco. Similar to the banh mi in toppings but uses bulgogi beef or chicken (as well as tofu) in a tortilla. Delicious. Then comes the wide variety of drinks, from local Propellor soda to coconut water. The best option though, are their bubble tea smoothies (4.50$) made with real fruit and blended on demand (kiwi-banana is my personal favourite.) With sandwiches averaging at about 6.95$ this makes one of the best working lunches that I can think of in town. The only downside is their early closing time of 7pm on weekdays. Seriously. Go here. I adore this place. I have stopped in countless times to get a banh mi sandwich and chow down at the high counter onsite or scoot across to the public gardens to find a sunny bench and enjoy. My favourite is the lemongrass chicken with everything. Be aware, everything includes cilantro, carrots, daikon, cucumber, and tiny slivers of a very hot red pepper. I love to get it with the pepper and then carefully pick out the pieces so I get the flavour contact and heat without overdoing it. The Korean tacos have also been excellent when I can bear to depart from my fave, and a great way to go is the pho (chicken or tofu) plus half a banh mi or one taco. Everything is fresh and delicious. Try their homemade organic lemonade with mint or whatever flavour they're serving up, it's refreshing and worth it! They also have canned Italian sodas and Propeller sodas, Perrier, bottled water. The service is friendly and quick, and it's a perfect spot to meet a friend or people-watch near the hotel complex next door. Highly recommended. read more

Indochine is a Halifax treasure - tasty, fresh and filling Bahn Mi, hot and spicy soups, along with tons of vegetarian options. Anything you can order with meat also has at least 3 veg alternatives - always a huge plus. The location is great and is very easy to get to, however the lack of parking can be frustrating when coming by car. The outdoor seating is a relief, as there is one long bar to sit at, with about 6 stools, and one table for 2. I think it would be great if Indochine would move to a new location (still downtown/spring garden!) with more seating and a more interesting decor. Currently, it feels a bit like a generic subway or panago interior. But regardless, the food is really all that matters, right? The only issues I've ever had is ending up with chicken when I ordered a tofu curry soup - they were apologetic and replaced it very quickly, which was nice (Why does that keep happening?!) though I've been feeling a little "once bitten twice shy" there now - always checking very carefully before digging in, but it hasn't been an issue since then. You guys. YOU. GUYS. I am legitimately addicted to Indochine, and I've only had 3-4 items from their menu. Every time I go in I think, "I should really try something different this time" but I don't think I will find anything I like more than the Buddha Banh Mi. The veggies are so crunchy and fresh, the bread is so warm and fresh, the tofu is cooked to perfection and fresh, even the pickled (in-house!) daikon and carrots taste fresh. Freshness: thy name is Indochine. The bubble tea smoothies are wicked good as well: they use real fruit (!) so they're a bit pricey, but totally worth it since they're not made with powdered ickiness. The staff are delightful, the shop is clean, and it's close to my house. Even if it weren't close to my house, I would go out of my way to eat here. Highly recommended! read more

I had the beef Korean taco and the chicken pho. The quality to price ratio is way off, so cheap for such amazing food! This location is great for take aways as its a small store front, the service was quick and very friendly. If you want to sit and enjoy a meal there are a few seats, and lots of seating outside. I decided to give this place a try. I wanted a snack and thought that a bahn mi would be perfect. After looking over the reviews, I decided to try it all (I couldn't fit in a fusion taco though). I ordered the pho, bun and a 1/2 bahn mi (pork belly). First of all, I want to say that a lot of this review is based on their bahn mi. Their bahn mi is pretty damn good. They give you an option of white or whole wheat, and have a bunch of different fillings you can put in them. I got everything in the sandwich but one thing I noticed is that they don't kill the sandwich with birds-eye chilis (which is kinda nice). I've had sandwiches that were super hot. I recommend the pork belly, it was pretty spectacular. The bun and pho however, were horrible. They're made with fresh ingredients, but the noodles are wrong, the broth has no flavour and they only either have chicken or vegetarian. Their chicken also was kinda weird. Tasted like deli store chicken. Although I thought their pho and bun were terrible, I still would recommend Indochine for the sheer awesomeness of their banh mi. read more

Indochine is great for offering fast, fresh, and creative food. We have an abundance of Mediterranean places in Halifax and lots of them are great. But that just makes Indochine all the more refreshing. Banh Mi are served on fantastic baguettes, tofu is well marinated and done well, and can I elaborate on how happy I am to go to a place that doesn't shy away from using cilantro??? Extra bonus points for their creation of (did they? Who cares it's damn good) the "phorrito". Even if you have a high tolerance for spice be careful ordering the "spicy" variety. They're serious business with those little Thai chilis. I often criticize "white people serve ethnic food they liked on vacation".... and I have no idea what their story is here. As I sat there in the warm afternoon sun, I found my stomach yearning for authentic Western cuisine. That's when I stumbled across Indochine - the pungent aroma was wafting through the open door, beckoning me to come inside. I had heard about their so called "fusion" tacos, blending the Korean and Mexican cultures together in harmony. My partner and I are interracial, so we take anything that combines races as a "teachable moment" to open up and learn more about each other. We ordered the chicken and tofu tacos, respectively, both which had a hot bulgogi marinade that danced on the delicate verge of pleasantly spicy. We lingered, enjoying the casual yet intimate ambience, feeding each other tacos whilst maintaining intense eye contact. Wow.... just wow. I'm not going to say I'm an expert in Asian cuisine, but I am always on the lookout for the true tastes and smells of my past.... and I found it - modified slightly, but I found it. The man and I were heading out for lunch and he suggested the "Korean Taco" saying "You'll love it! It's Korean and it's in a tortilla wrap, best of both worlds" but of course, I was skeptical. We walked in and I thought, "I don't think I'm going to like this - who is crazy enough to combine Korean with Mexican" I ordered one up regardless, with chicken. One bite and I was hooked. The flavours in that little wrap brought me back 6 months and I was back, sitting on a stool at my favourite little everything restaurant in my home of Dangjin. The flavours are the same as the side dishes or those you'll find in bibimbap. OMG it was soooo good. When my boyfriend asked if I wanted to try his I said "No, that's okay. If I take a bite of yours, that means you have the right to take a bite of mine and I'm not sharing." (At this time I didn't know he was eating a lemon grass sub.) After I inhaled this concoction, he offered a bite again, this time saying that it was lemongrass, I immediately passed him the last bite of my food and took his and it was a-mae-zing. The lemongrass blew me away and it was the perfect cleanse after the Korean spiciness and goodness that I had been eating. With it being conveniently located just 7 minutes walking distance from my home, I have a feeling I'm going to become a regular there. :) read more

I've been to Indochine quite a few times now and I've always enjoyed it. I haven't tried a lot of their menu items but I have had their pho, banh mi sandwiches, and their Korean tacos. Usually I get the pho combo (option for chicken or vegetarian) with a 1/2 banh mi sandwich or a Korean taco. When I opt for the Korean taco I usually go with the beef bulgogi which is my favorite. It's pretty spicy and full of sauce and vegetables. The price for the pho combo isn't too bad (about $11 or so after tax I think) for the amount you get. It doesn't seem like a lot at first but it's definitely enough to fill you up for lunch. All in all, Indochine is a great place in a great location. Aside from the place being pretty small, the food is great and the prices aren't too bad compared to other Vietnamese places in Halifax. read more

I've fallen in love with the Bahn Mi sandwiches from Indochine. If I'm catching a movie or running some errands on Spring Garden, I will stop in and grab a bite for dinner. It's nice to be able to grab something inexpensive that's fast, fresh, delicious and relatively healthy. My favorite sandwich is the Spicy BBQ chicken, though it's not super spicy so you may want to add some extra sweet chili or rooster sauce if you are a heat lover. I really enjoy Indochine's commitment to real and fresh food. It's real chicken that's cut up every day, not some processed deli meat, the produce is always fresh and crispy and I love that they serve the sandwiches on delicious, organic local bread. I'd never heard of a Korean taco, but on a recommendation of a friend, the combination of two things I like separately sounded good enough to try together, and I was blown away by how awesome these are. I basically want to find excuses to eat them all the time, and in less than two weeks since my introduction, I've already been back twice. (And I have zero shame in admitting that.) Yes, I'm forming an addiction. Yes, I'm 100% okay with that. So what is a Korean taco? Think of it like a soft shell Mexican taco exterior with Korean add-ins and Asian spices. And, what I didn't realize until the end of my initial visit is that they offer a Gluten-Free rice wrapper, so you can opt for a GF taco! Instantly my new favourite food just became belly-friendly, and that's a major plus. Pro tip: The GF wrappers are slightly bigger than the regular ones, so if you're feeling like more than one regular taco, and don't want to deal with two messy wrappers, go with the heftier GF option. It's the same price as two tacos, and it's just as tasty and satisfying. Now, this review shouldn't just be about the tacos - I mean, they do offer more than than just tacos. This past week I opted to place a delivery order for a work lunch, and the tacos + pho combo was fantastic. Delivery worked out well and the pho was hot and came with all the add-ins (sprouts, sauces) packaged separately so each person could customize their bowl. It was an awesome alternative for lunch and everyone enjoyed it. If you haven't taken notice of this spot on South Park yet, make sure you soon do. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. It's easily one of my favourite stops in Halifax and has become my go-to spot when I'm looking for a light, delicious and pretty healthy lunch. Also? They deliver. That discovery was one of the highlights of my life. If you haven't been to Indochine, get your butt in gear and head there immediately. The bahn mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) are delicious and the very embodiment of fresh. I just feel *better* after eating one. I usually go for the lemongrass chicken, but I've also enjoyed the Buddha sandwich (marinated tofu) and the vegetarian meatball. I also really like the smoothies, though you need to be careful when combining flavours. Some just don't work and the staff apparently just like to let your creativity run free. My sole complaint is the hours - I really wish they were open later. Right now, their summer hours have them open until 8:00, but they normally close at 7:00. As someone who routinely eats late suppers (bad, I know), I'd love it if I had Indochine as an option when I'm looking for a 9:00 supper.
