This bank is a nightmare to deal with. Getting a loan here felt like pulling teeth while blindfolded. Nobody answers calls, emails go into a black hole! The process was painfully slow, disorganized, and honestly felt like they couldn't care less if I got approved or not. I spent weeks chasing basic updates while they acted like doing their job was a favor. The VP, Richard Livingston is the best he gets on a zoom call for appearances! The man was rude, spoke to others around me but never to me. They will tell you he loves to get on the phone with customers to put a face to the name you know customer service! Don't bother! After paying the $5,000 fee for "due diligence" I got nothing, not a copy of the appraisal not a denial or approval! Don't bother trying to reach anyone above they simply do not care so save your money and find a real bank that knows how to conduct themselves and knows how to handle real estate transactions! Industrial Bank Financial Institution doesn't understand how to handle power of attorney documents and has staff that can't execute them or explain why they can't. Sadly, I have to give Industrial Bank a 1-star review. As a media personality who produced their radio commercials during my tenure at Radio One in the late 80s and 90s, I remember the owners' desire to do the best they could for the black community. My recent experience was a disappointing departure from that original core mission. When I went to the bank to help my 96-year-old aunt execute a power of attorney yesterday, the assistant branch manager, DeVonna Young, displayed incompetence and ignorance of both bank policies and legal requirements. She did not understand the importance of a power of attorney document or the role of a notary in relation to it. When asked what policy or law stated that a power of attorney was invalid, she responded by threatening to have us, including my 96-year-old aunt, removed from the bank by security. My aunt has been trying to get the bank to acknowledge her power of attorney for two years. The previous manager also failed to understand the document's importance, making my aunt go through unnecessary steps only to dismiss the notarized document as invalid. This is unacceptable for a bank claiming to serve the black community. They should at least have the curiosity to lawfully or, legally understand the code, rule or policy on the matter. The prior branch manager, now retired, also declined my aunt's notorzed power of attorney out of ignorance, without providing any policy, code, or regulation. This type of arbitrary decision-making echoes the harmful practices of redlining that banks have historically used against the black community. Now, we're experiencing a new kind of discrimination where employees' ignorance or lack of knowledge affects lawful access to accounts. My aunt has needed access to her husband's account since May 2022. This long-term ignorance has placed an unnecessary burden on our family and community. Their incompetence did not offer any policy, rule, regulation, or remedy to help us understand their declination. It reminds us of the historical friction our community has faced with banks and still continues to face now, from our own. This experience is particularly shameful given the bank's historical commitment to the community. I hope someone knowledgeable and credible will contact my aunt today to resolve this issue. Ms. Young I'm sure remembers us. This situation highlights a broader issue that could affect many others who need to use power of attorney documents to manage their loved ones' accounts. Once again, Industrial-Bank has fallen by the wayside. After their upgrade the service seem even worse than before. No one in this institution seems to know anything about banking or how to help its customers, they only have one excuse after another. I don't know how this bank continues to exist. It takes weeks to get anything done, when you call the customer service line you on hold for hours on end only to get a response that its nothing we can do to help. In the age of computer technology, it's not hard to hit a button on a computer to fix an issue, I worked in the banking industry for years as well as customer service and I know it only take a minute to fix a problem, but this seems to be an issue at Industry Bank. When they upgraded the systems, they didn't put any thought into it which causes more issues for its customers. I just don't know how this bank support its customers in a professional manner, its one frustrating issues after another when trying to get some of the simplest things done. I hate that I can't give this bank a ZERO rating. I have a very close friend, who I've known for 31 years, and she is as close to me as a biological sister. She asked me two years ago to assist with her financial matters while she was being transferred into a long term facility for an indefinite amount of time. From day one, the banker whom she had often spoken to, Tanya Clark, was OVERLY protective of my sister's finances, and made every conversation and request difficult, as if I was someone she needed to protect my sister from. Although she is considered an elder, my sister has ALL of her faculties and can make sound financial decisions without anyone's help, including myself. I only proceed as she requests. However, she does not have apps linked to her account for payment with cashapp, Zelle, Venmo, etc, so her financial matters are handled by debit card and online transfers. The bank's telephone banking system was updated but she was not given clear instructions on how to set it up to get timely account transaction information, so she asked that I access her account online to get her statements and transfer funds to handle business matters on her behalf, as her Financial POA. When Tanya learned of this, she blocked online access, causing significant delays in my sister's business transactions. I sent the Financial POA forms as requested "a second time" (the first time was when I initially became the Financial POA nearly 2 years ago), but it was not accepted because my sister's daughter is on the document if for some reason I am unable to perform the duties of the Financial POA, but I am PRIMARY, and it doesn't state that we are both Financial POA's with shared responsibilities. This is the conclusion that the bank's document review dept is stating that it means. How could that person(s) misinterpret the document??? Or did Tanya simply not submit the document and unilaterally simply block me from assisting my sister. EVERY time we have to call about a matter (which is rarely because I don't like her disposition as if she's protecting my sister from something untoward, when in reality the only thing she's doing is hindering progress of financial business matters that need to be handled until my sister it out of the facility. I was informed yesterday that Tanya is a "supervisor". WOW! Well, my sister has decided to close her account that she's had for 65 years, because it no longer serves a purpose that benefits her to handle her financial matters in a timely manner with cordial and professional customer service. Not to mention, it takes "forever' to get someone on the line. One time, I held on the line for 40 minutes before I disconnected the line. That was ridiculous! I have been with Industrial Bank for a few years now and it has been a good experience. The staff is friendly and professional whenever I interact with them. My family and I want to support a black owned bank and chose this financial institution. I have read the reviews and I request that people take into consideration that this bank does not receive the same support as some of the other "popular" banks however, still provide better interest rates in comparison to major financial institutions. If Industrial Bank receives the same support as the other financial institutions, they will be able to operate at a higher level (i.e. 24 hr support, etc.). Industrial Bank does a great job in lieu of the majority of the community that they represent and support not reciprocating the same support. I humbly suggest to have a secondary bank as a back-up plan in the event there's an issue until you feel comfortable solely relying on their services. It wouldn't be fair for me to disregard someone's personal experience. We all have a right to express our experience good or bad. They dont do notary service, I was told today, even though they had a notary on the premises. Isn't a notary's job to certify identity? That's all. I opened my account almost a year ago. I really wanted to support a black owned bank. Almost a year later and I'm going to have to close my account. It was a lot of minor things that started to add up & really annoy me. Their mobile check deposit never worked for me. I tried multiple times on both android & apple devices. The same check that wouldn't go thru on their app would work on my other banks mobile app. Outside of transferring money & checking your balance you can't do anything else from the app. Their customer service hours are only M-F 9-6. If you need support on the weekend you're out of luck. I had an incident when I tried to use my card for a large purchase and it was declined although I had the money in my account. I figured out it must have been an issue with my daily spending limit. But I had to wait until Monday. Then I was told I had to go in to the bank to sign a form. Their overdraft fees/process doesn't make sense. I always link my savings to my checking account just in case. I thought this was done with industrial. Until I had a charge that took a month to clear and when it did the money was in my savings but didn't automatically transfer over. When I called I was told (Again) that I had to go into the bank to sign a form, etc, etc. They also would not refund the overdraft fee as a courtesy. Even though I never over drew my account with them before. When I went into a branch they explained their overdraft policy is $12 per transfer & they transfer in increments of $50 so I had to give her an amount that I wanted to transfer over at a time. So if the overdraft amount was $5 but my limit was $50 they'd automatically transfer $50 whether I needed all of that or not. I bank with 3 other banks and it's never worked that way. Basically they're far behind in technology, it can take days for items to post (for deposits or debits). I guess someone is manually doing everything & customer service can't do anything. You have to go into a branch for everything which can be inconvenient since they only have 3-4 branches in the area. Gross incompetence seems to be the theme at Industrial Bank. I've tried so hard to support this bank because it's so important to support our community-based Black-owned banks. However, the gross incompetence which resides at every level of this organization is dumbfounding and beyond frustrating. No one seems to know what they're doing and every issue seems to take multiple phone calls to resolve. I have placed complaints with the Executive office and nothing has improved. Today, I had a young lady who clearly had no clue about Industrial's IT and online banking who was arguing with me that I was doing something wrong which was preventing me from exporting my transactions so that I could import them into QuickBooks. I could have explained it to her 100 ways and she was determined to tell me that I was doing something wrong. I tried calling back customer service to see if someone else could help me and he was just as useless. The young lady called me back, said that she had spoken with her supervisor, who confirmed (in her mind) that she was right and I was wrong. She walked me through the export process again, I received the same error message, and she insisted that I was wrong again. I asked her if the Industrial website had any compatibility issues with Google Chrome and she insisted that she had just read something stating that Chrome was the best web browser to use for accessing Industrial's website. While she put me on hold again, I logged into Explorer to test her theory that it wouldn't work and was FINALLY able to access all of my transactions and download them. She came back on the line, I told her that I figured it out on my own using Explorer and, not even skipping a beat, she said, "That's great!"...as if she had done something for me. No apologies. No acknowledgment of her error. Nothing. This is only the most recent of many outrageous encounters with Industrial Bank. I cannot recommend them to a soul...not even my worst enemy. read more

Sadly, I have to agree with the other folks here posting 1-star reviews. As a rule we try to bank locally. Our family moved our accounts to Industrial after Chevy Chase Bank was bought out, but now we have closed all of our accounts. When I considered opening my business accounts there I found they didn't seem to know how to deal with even slightly unusual situations. Their internal procedures were limiting and inflexible in ways I haven't had problems with at other banks. The ridiculous fees were what finally pushed us away though. The most outrageous example was when they charged my 11-year old daughter a $15 inactivity fee ON HER MINOR'S SAVINGS ACCOUNT. Industrial needs to take a hard look at the way it does business and how it sees its customer base. Fortunately the first words out of my daughter's mouth when she saw that fee on her statement were "Daddy, can I change this (bank)?" So it was a positive educational experience overall. read more

I tried to use this local black bank, but it didn't work out. I will say that there are some local non minority banks here in DC that are just as bad, ie Colombo Bank. Nevertheless, this bank wouldn't clear a 15k certified check that I wanted to deposit for at least 10 business days. Secondly, they don't loan any money to blacks in the community. They only loan to well established immunity business leaders. You can find the owners on the golf course regularly surrounded by a bunch of white boys, hobnobbing it up. read more

I'm a little surprised by the negative reviews on here, I've been a customer for two years and have always had a positive experience. I initially opened a business account with them for a side business that I run and later moved over my personal account. Staff has always been friendly and helpful when I needed anything. They offer 2.5% interest on their personal checking and I haven't found another local institution that comes close to that. Initially their app wasn't letting me deposit checks on my phone but a quick call corrected that. As with any smaller bank, a big, national bank probably offers a few more technology bells and whistles but I wanted to keep my money with a local institution. read more

Really disappointed with this bank. Had issues with debit card fraud twice in the last year, and it's taken 3 weeks to replace my debit card both times. They won't send a new one after locking a card until you come into the actual branch, meaning I've had to take off of work just to get a replacement card since they close so early. Customer service has been generally apathetic about the whole ordeal. DO NOT PUT YOUR MONEY IN THIS BANK! This has been my WORST banking experience to date. I tried to buy dinner yesterday and my card was declined. I was very confused as I knew my account was not overdrawn. The customer service hours end around 6pm so there was no one to assist me. I spoke with a representative about ten minutes ago who informed me that there was fraudulent activity on my account and the card was blocked. I asked why I wasn't informed of the situation and she lets me know that my telephone number wasn't on file so there was no way for them to contact me. Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!! She also lets me know that a new card was sent in February (So this issue is over two weeks old), and as of 3/15/17 I'm still waiting to receive that card. I asked for a new card to be sent overnight and I was told that I'd have to pay $30. All in all, Industrial Bank doesn't save my information and it's now my responsibility to pay for the new card to be expedited. Great Banking!!!!! 1. No after hours customer service 2. This bank and I got off to an uneasy start due to the paper work that couldn't be signed electronically. But, eventually that was fixed. Next, I was being charged a monthly maintenance fee on my savings when I had a direct deposit. It took a month, but eventually that was fixed. I decided to keep the goal savings account because I am trying to support local banks and African American owned. I gave three stars because the customer service was pretty good, and I haven't had any recent issues. If I could give them a negative ZERO star I would! Do not use this bank, I have been trying for years to get access to my account online, my requests are ignored and they do not return calls. When I finally received a temporary password, it was invalid and they would not provide any assistance. I still cannot access my account online. Customer service personnel are RUDE to say the least. They detected fraudulent activity on my credit card and shut it down, but didn't bother to tell me until AFTER the fact! Who does that? It two 3 weeks for me to get a new card! I had to request it be expedited 2 times! They kept saying it was in the mail. By the way, there were NO fraudulent charges on my account when they closed it. Don't expect to get your bank statements, I asked for a copy and they wanted to charge me! Who does that? They cannot stop or monitor withdrawals from your account, either. Expect NO action from them on unauthorized withdrawals, they said 'it was not their fault'. I RAN to another bank, opened an account, and received my credit card and online access the same day! Oh man, let me tell you about this place. I wish I could give zero stars to them. DO NOT PUT YOUR MONEY HERE! I wanted to support a local, African-American owned business, so I tried to open an account online. After a few weeks, there was *still* no response from them as to why my application hadn't moved forward. No response even when I reached out several times. Then I finally got a call, after more than a month, telling me that they don't accept e-signatures and that I had to print out my application, sign it by hand, and then scan it in and re-upload. At this point I was wondering if this was something I still wanted to do after they were clearly so disorganized and bad with customer service, so I thought I would take the weekend to think about it. I didn't re-upload anything yet. Well, I woke up this morning to find that, without warning me, they had taken $10,278.35 from my current bank. Since there was no warning, this means my account was overdrafted, so they also ensured large fees. I called them as soon as they opened and was told I would get a call back from the online accounts manager and that they were escalating the issue. Called again at 11:30, and was told the online accounts manager was "in a meeting," and the issue was escalated, and I would get a call by close of business. I have still not gotten a call, because this is apparently not a serious issue for them. The person on the phone seemed shocked when I demanded my money back within the day. I'm going to be calling them for the THIRD TIME soon. Do not bank with these people. They are unorganized, have terrible customer support, and don't give a shit about you. read more

The bank is very difficult to deal with and it's a shame because you would like to deal with a minority owned bank. They have limited number of branches in which you have to do everything in person. The staff is unattentive and usually one person working customer service. The customer telepone service is only open M-F 9 to 6. So once again you can not make any inquiries or changes until the next business day. This bank is by far one of the worst banks, next to Bibby Financial, that I have ever dealt with. Their customer service is poor. They have ignored me for almost four months on trying to get a UCC filing terminated. It is a simple process that takes less than three minutes online. However, it has to be done by the bank. Our company paid off the business loan almost a decade ago and they still haven't processed a simple termination form. I hope everyone who decides to use them reads the Yelp reviews first. We tried to get a mortgage through this bank to support local business. We ended up having to switch lenders because after we were in process they were non-responsive. Their rate wasn't great either. We ended up going with another lender and closed on time a lower rate. Don't use these guys for a mortgage. Waste of time. read more

My father has been with Industrial Bank for over 20 years. That all changed this week when I went in to open two savings and cd accounts. As my fathers POA, I have conducted all business as his attorney and sole representative. Well I had the misfortune of being served by Roy Ewing. I was absolutely appalled by his TOTAL lack of experience and professionalism! He treated me as a criminal even going so far as to call his ''legal team'' and tell them that he was denying my request because it was my father's account (mind you, I am on the account). He informed me that there would be a hold on the account until "the matter" could be resolved. I walked right up to the teller and withdrew the funds necessary to open the cd without any hitch. Roy Ewing claimed he would contact me in the a.m. which he didn't and after several unanswered messages, I drove to the bank to CLOSE said account. He dodged me and stretched out my wait time by "ignoring" my presence but after more than 30 minutes, I made my presence known and asked to meet with him NOW. He put me off by saying he was going upstairs but would be right back to assist me. I even requested that someone else assist me but he rebuffed that idea and said he'd be right with me. I had NO concern as I know the law as it relates to my POA. Roy didn't have the nerve to face me. Someone directed me over to a teller to assist me with closing my account. I looked over and he was sitting in the waiting area assisting another customer. He NEVER looked me in the eye to apologize for his error or for his half-assed unprofessional ways. We want to do business with our folks but there is always at least one that makes it not worth the hassle. I will take my 75K were I am appreciated.
