When you first enter, there is a gallery room which has art pieces by local artists, as well as vintage furniture for sale. As tattoo artists, they made it known that they want to help showcase other local artists as well, which I think is a great concept/model to show appreciation to the community. There are two artists that opened the studio - Betsy Butler and David Riley. Their individual areas are comfortable and beautifully decorated. Betsy is such a friendly person that makes everyone feel seen and welcomed. She is a fantastic artist and everything she does is unique and special to each person. I love her and her work! David is the artist that I work with. He has done all of my tattoos for several years. David is such a talented artist, but he is also a very down-to-earth person that makes sure you feel comfortable. I appreciate that he takes your ideas and uses his creativity to make something that ends up being exactly what you wanted. He makes sure that he pursues projects that let him express his creativity, while spending time to develop an idea that is perfect for the client. It is a private studio. They don't take walk-ins, they are appointment only - you book through their social media/email. Pricing is done by artist, by the hour, so as far as I know, there are no lump prices for specific pieces. If you need a tattoo and don't mind waiting for quality - definitely check them out!

It was a Saturday and I wanted a tiny tattoo just wording no graphic or shading. Very basic but I wanted the line to be really fine so it was definitely some precision line work. I went to another shop first that was booked up and they suggested Upper Hand Tattoo because Saturday is their walkins only day. We drove over around 4pm and waited about a half hour. They had I believe three artists working through the customers. Within the Russian tattoo artist roulette I was up next when Bob was available. I'd been admiring some of his US Navy themed tattoo sketches all along the walls so j was happy to get him! He looked over my idea and suggested a slightly different approach because we knew my idea wouldn't fit properly in the location I'd chosen. After some tweaking he came back to me with a new idea that I loved even more. Minutes later he had me paying the front desk girl (cash only friends) and I was ready. Pricing was reasonable too, exactly what I was expecting it to be. Once at his station he carefully laid out his tools and unwrapped the needles from their protective sealed wrappers right in front my eyes. Everything was very professional and he was also cool to talk to. He was really quick which I appreciated since it was on the inside of my wrist (ouch!) yet he was not too quick to make mistakes. Nothing big but started off with several others that touted walk in services. After being growled at over the phone and in person by other shops that we should have booked an appointment, our last call was to Holy City before we threw in the towel. I wish I remembered the name of the girl answering phones and running the front of the shop. So nice! She took our number and called an artist to see if he could take care of us. An immediate call back and she booked us for that afternoon. Just as friendly when we showed up and the shop looked and smelled clean. We had to wash our hands when we entered and they took Covid precautions every step of the way. Will did our tattoos and he couldn't have been more polite and professional. I give a lot of credit to shops that don't look down their noses when you ask for something small instead of starting a large custom piece. We were treated like our two small tattoos were just as important as someone coming in to collaborate on a custom sleeve. I will be back next time I'm in Charleston. Thanks, Holy City!

I ended up liking the larger design but I only truly realized that it was his fault because he wanted to take up the full 3 hour session. I was naive since I got my first tattoo with him and I put my trust in him for my second. DO NOT schedule an appointment without asking for a price before hand. Quality of the tattoo was mediocre and over double what it should have costed. Also gave me terrible advice for healing process. I was nothing but nice and quiet the whole time but honestly since talking to other people and realizing that I got scammed, i downloaded yelp just for this review. 0/10, don't get scammed. I'm sure some of the artists are capable but mine was cheap and stole my money. $1200 for 3 hours of work (with tip) that could have easily been $500.
