In a nutshell, he served on the Supreme Court and was part of landmark decisions including Brown v Board of Education. He also was the Chief U.S. Prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials. His views on human and civil rights, constitutional law, and international law are still very relevant today. During the first part of our visit, a friendly and informative docent guided us around the mansion. Then we explored the remainder of the Robert H Jackson Center which covers his life and legacy. There was a film playing in the theatre and we sat down to watch the last 15 minutes of it. There was also a lower level which had an art exhibit on Nazi perpetrators. I really enjoyed the museum and found the exhibits thought provoking. I would love to attend an event here in the future.

When we entered, we were greeted by a volunteer who gave us an overview of what's in the museum. Then we saw the wall of photos- of what the train station and port once looked like. The next room is a replica of the train station ticket office and managers desk. Lots of old antique communication instruments including a telegraph. Great view of the water from this room. In the next room there's a ton! Century old voting booth, lantern collection, schoolhouse items, rail wagon, farm items, collection of Kodak cameras, and so much more! There's also a display of items made in Chautauqua county from many of the businesses that were once here! Great way to spend an hour (or less), and kid friendly too!! $2 donation.

We visited on a weekend in June, so Bemus Point was packed, and we had to walk a fair ways from the…read moreclosest parking spot I could find, but the walk was worth it. I was expecting to see some beautiful powerboats from the age of wood, but what really blew me away was the collection of outboard motors dating back as far as 1908, all in beautiful condition. (At least to look at. I don't know how many of them are actually in running condition.) Growing up on the ocean, I'm used to outboards lasting maybe five years if you're lucky. I'm guessing that the collection focuses mostly on the brands that Lawson sold through the years. Most of the powerboats (and they are gorgeous) are Chris-Craft, and most of the outboards are Evinrudes and Johnsons, with two Mercuries (that I saw), and a Japanese outboard that was captured during World War II. (That item alone was probably worth the price of admission, which is pretty reasonable for these days.) I didn't see a British Seagull or Viking, so I assume that Lawson didn't sell them, and they may not even have been sold or used in that area. I was surprised to learn that Chris-Craft used to have a plant in Jamestown. Since I've seen lots of Chris-Crafts in B.C., I had just assumed that they were made somewhere on the West Coast. There are also rowing shells, canoes, rowboats, and some curiosities like early attempts at snowmobiles and jet skis. Don't forget to look up, or you'll miss the homebuilt seaplane (and a bunch of other things). The structure has been lovingly restored, the space is used very efficiently, and the volunteers are friendly and helpful. They also have meeting space available for rent. Now, if I only had an excuse to hold a meeting there!

Aero…read moreMarina where I moored my stunning 18 horse power Johnson Custom Craft boat back in the early 60's. The place was ready to fall apart from repair neglect back then so I can't imagine how they were ever able to restore it to what it is today. And the best thing is that it is now a museum for those ever so lovely wooden speedboat type of boats that once dominated the waters of Lake Chautauqua. It's just great that they have managed to use this old marina for this purpose as historically it has proof that it sold boats to Christopher Columbus Smith way before he even founded his Chris-Craft boat building corporation. And as such it also represents more than any other place, what boating has been all about on Lake Chautauqua. The facility houses some of the finest examples I've seen of early wooden boats, particularly Chris-Craft, but better than that, it's a learning and educational center. For those interested in old boats, they have shop manuals and information you just can't find elsewhere. So, if you're in the process of a wooden speedboat restoration, you might want to check it out. It is also excellent with children even have a boating simulator so they might learn what it is like to be behind the helm of one of these early boats. I confess I left the place still drooling over the beauty of the crafts they had on exhibit.

The Wilder Museum is one of the very best little local types of museums I've ever seen. It has over…read more3,000 exhibits, most of local interest but others that would score international interest such as the Joseph DeFrees antique gun collection. It's no ordinary collection. The guns of this collection are striking examples of the exceptionally rare and ultimate works of gunsmithing and metal engraving. Besides the 1963 Mercedes favorite car of National Forge owner Robert Wilder, there are all sorts of examples of the works and products of national forge. Then there are Indian artifacts and histories covering nearly 8,000 years of the county bordering Seneca Indian Nation. There is a good history of Seneca Chief Cornplanter along with the monument dedicated to his memory. With so many significant things you should at least plan upon a 3 hour visit as the war or military not only takes some time but contains exhibits that are real eye openers as to the history of the many military engagements depicted. I found the antique medical area, much of which I remember to be downright frightening. It's unbelievable how primitive our medical sciences were only as far back as the 40's and 50's. Overall it's a great museum, well worth seeing and a Yelp Five Stars with me.
