Tidy, charming little rural town in Hinckley, Illinois but the funeral home was strange…read more I came to Nash-Nelson funeral home from 75 miles away, trudging along rural roads passing one corn field after another. I finally arrived at the funeral home to pay my respects to my dear friend who had passed away. It was a few minutes before the 2 pm start of his memorial service. I brought some pastry for the coffee room and a gift bag for my friend's mother. A tall bespectacled man came in and exclaimed, I "had" to go to the chapel as the service was about to begin. I didn't even hear him behind me! Never a polite introduction or an excuse me! He made me feel so uncomfortable. Then once the service began, he's lurking inside the chapel as if he was one of the family's embarrassingly peculiar relatives but he wasn't. The service concluded, I'm standing in front talking to my friend's mom and this weird man is standing at the head of the casket, an earshot away. It's like he was an old crow warding people away from the casket at this sensitive moment. Finally, we get to the room where the coffee was being served as I asked who's that man? Oh, that's the funeral director, I was told. OMG! How do suspicious people like him find jobs consoling the bereaved ? He was moving us along in the coffee room, trying to get us to leave. The whole event concluded in an hour and forty-five minutes. We were a peaceful group, so there was no need to hover around us like that, practically breathing down our necks. The funeral director is NOT one of the mourners, that's NOT his place. He's supposed to make himself scarce-like and stay in the foyer, if needed we will find you. I felt like I was in a Perry Mason scene with this creep of a funeral director, the only thing it wasn't in black and white and filmed in 1957. Weird funeral director!
