Inkwell is carved out of my artsy print and font-filled dreams. Or maybe letter-pressed out of my dreams would be more accurate since the place is filled with insanely gorgeous prints, stationery, gift cards, calendars, notebooks, tote bags, and so much more. This is one of those boutiques that is just going to make me poor. Why? Because after my first visit this morning, all I can think about is who I can send gift cards to...which is soon to be just about everyone. Maybe I'll just slowly work through my entire Yelp friends list? The interior is a heavenly white with gorgeous painted brick walls, an open feel, round showcase tables, and a clean storage system that manages to keep a shop of small products looking both tidy and whimsical at the same time. I'm not sure if it's all the cute animals, trees, and nature prints, but it kind of feels like stepping into the world of the Fantastic Mr. Fox in all the right ways. I managed to keep myself on strategy today, buying only the four thank-you cards that I immediately needed. But I'll be back...I just pray for the strength to refrain from a purchase of nursery room prints that I'm in love with. You know...'cause I might accidentally give birth over the next few days. I LOVE the new space! I think it's smaller than their old location, but it feels bigger - and definitely brighter. There is so much natural light, which makes the whole browsing the beautiful art even more lovely. I want to buy everything in the store. They have gorgeous prints, cards, scarfs, key chains, tea towels, cat toys...yeah, just about everything. A huge amount of their stuff is locally made (anything with a little blue dot on it) which I really appreciate. I love supporting local businesses that support other local businesses. Inkwell is the reason I started buying cards again. I would much rather spend $5 on a locally made card than on something mass produced. And it's always a little piece of art too, so it's a two-in-one gift! read more

Every single time I go to Halifax I spend an absurd amount of money buying cards from Inkwell. Chances are if you have received a card from me in the past 9 months it came from here... They feature super cool stuff, often made by locals. The cards are a big point for me, but they also carry art work, calendars, notebooks, and so on. Every time I've stopped in the people working here have been oh-so-pleasant, which luckily it makes it a bit easier for me to part ways with all the money I'm handing over. If you are in Halifax and enjoy letter-pressed beauty you should stop into Inkwell. It's well worth the visit. read more

If you were to take all of my favourite things - letterpress, ampersands, stationery, tote bags, pugs, kittens, cupcakes and well-designed things - and shove them all into one space, you'd come up with Inkwell. I stopped in while they were still cash and visa only, so I haven't purchased anything yet (making my husband happy), but I instantly fell in love with the store and everything in it. The store is all white and turquoisey blue and pretty and full of pretty letterpress and other stationery goodies. I could do some serious damage in this store. In fact, I fully intend to do some serious damage and have new letterpress art for my apartment. They also carry Uppercase magazine - which I love big time. Now that I live out in the big wide world on my own, I have a lot of blank walls. As you can imagine, this is boring! Lately I've been keeping my eyes open for new art that speaks to me, and I realized I'd never checked out the stock at Inkwell. When i pushed open the front door and stepped into the bright, airy space, I pretty much lost the ability to move. Holy cow, I could WALLPAPER my place, there's so much gorgeous art here! I went up and down the tiny shop, drooling over the beautiful prints and frames. From large works of art to tiny little creations, this is an outstanding haven of handcrafted works. Inkwell is the cutest little store in downtown Halifax, hands down. I want to buy everything in here. I'm obsessed with almost every print, card and note they sell. They also offer locally made ceramics, textiles, note books etc. I love this store so much because they are such a heavy supporter of locally made art. Many of the prints on my walls come from Inkwell or are created by artist that Inkwell carries. They also make prints at the store, and hold workshops on occasion. If you haven't stopped in yet, I strongly suggest you do. If you love letter press, you will adore this store. read more

Inkwell is one of my favorite places for gift ideas. Even if I'm just looking for a card, they have a large selection that offers more variety and character than a traditional Hallmark Card. If I don't know what to get someone, I know a quick visit to Inkwell will help solve that problem. Crisp and clean are the best words to describe the atmosphere and overall look and feel to the store. The simple colors highlight the product and allow you to picture every single item in your home! Resistance is necessary when entering the store. Luckily I find the prices very reasonable and, considering you are purchasing local products, you can always feel good walking out of the store with an item (or two ... or 10). Inkwell has done a great job of supporting local and I think they are a great addition to Halifax! read more

This little shop is my new favourite gem in downtown. I'm a huge papercraft and letterpress fan, so this shop has things that I just want to drool over... seriously, it's as if I need to manhandle everything they have because it's ALL so beautiful. The interior is bright and light and lets all of the products stand out. I love the section of wall that has prints hanging using binding clips! The goods are a mix of local and a few from faraway, but either way, it's got a great vibe, and I'm sure that a lot of people in my life will receive future gifts from me via this store (whether they like it or not...)! If you're looking for cute cards, art or some small housewares, Inkwell has fantastic options! I love that they make it easy to support NS artists by tagging their products with a blue dot. Whenever I'm looking for cards for special occasions (birthdays, weddings, babies), I try to pop by here and get one that's both fun and a small piece of art. I really love the new location with its wall of windows! It makes the space feel huge! I walked here, so parking wasn't a concern, but I think there might have been street parking available nearby. read more

I walked into this store the first day it opened. The lady who runs the Loop on Barrington was showing me this sweet little note card with a ball of yarn on it, so up I headed. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the clean, white walls. The sweet, well lit cupboards full of tea towels, handmade calenders, and paper goodies. The cards lining the wall are simply too charming to pass up. I really enjoy purchasing the little packs of random papers that I use for art journaling. I've also purchased a small necklace with a hand drawn thistle on it that I really like. All in all, Inkwell Modern is a must-see if you're in Halifax. I'm so pleased to have this charming niche store right downtown! read more

This is the prettiest store in Halifax. When I first walked in I was very impressed with the layout: white, spartan, symmetrical, tasteful. Not kitcshy, cluttered or "cozy," as small spaces tend to be. The displays remind me of an art gallery, where the focus is on presenting the artists' work at its best. Lovely handmade cards, notebooks, stationery, shirts, bags, pens ... it was difficult to choose just the two items I had come for. The owner, Andrea, was behind the counter and very friendly and helpful. This is just the type of store Halifax needs more of: supporting craft/art and its creators. I treated myself to a drawing of an elephant and some pretty paper flowers when I recently got a new job. Halifax Yelp May Day Review #5 - Getting Crafty I was exposed to this shop for the first time while checking out the Open City festivities. I can't believe it's taken me so long so visit! This store is just a whole bunch of pretty. I love just about everything in this store, and what I love even more is that the prints are really reasonably priced! This place makes me want to get my place all organized so I can properly display some works. I've been really into cards lately, so I'll be stopping in soon to restock my collection. I also plan on coming back to pick up some prints to add some pizazz to my home. On my visit I picked up the most adorable French Pastry calendar for the total price of $12. French pastries are one of my most favorite things in the world. When the year is over I plan on trimming off the dates and framing. This is a fantastic store to bring out my inner girly girl. read more

Inkwell is the perfect place to go if you have a friend, girlfriend, co-worker, family member or anyone at all in your life and you are stuck on what to get them for (insert any occasion here). The store is simply beautiful, open and decorated in a clean modern style but it's in a heritage building so the space has lots of character. There's no pressure to buy but Andrea is very helpful if you have any questions, so you are free to take your time and look at everything. And you will want to look at every single thing because the store is full of curious and interesting items, including the letterpress machine. I got to print my own coaster on the machine at the 1 year anniversary open house. read more

I can't describe Inkwell without dipping into a bucket of phrases that can only be used in love stories told by my grandmother. I believe the first three words that came out of my mouth when I took the two steps back onto the sidewalk of Market Street was "this is fate" referring to the fact that the most beautiful store in the world had just opened up less than a block away from my workplace. This was followed by a giant smile and the the realization that I was going to seek out a lot of reasons to buy cards for people. Beside every holiday and birthday I am now buying beautiful letterpress cards for events such as "sorry I was such a cranky bitch yesterday", "what's for supper?" and "you are lovely". Andrea, the shop owner and letterpress artist extraordinaire, has brought in a wide selection of art and handmade gifts that always hit the nail on the head when you want to give your special people, something special. read more
