Tucked away in the heart of suburbia a club for dancing. But not a dance club, if you see what I…read moremean. This is a big old Victorian mansion, the sort that Whalley Range has oodles of. It's quite shabby in an 80s way but it's got a kind of charm to it. It's got a few different monthly nights. One is 80s/90s hip hop, another northern soul and also a psychedelic night. The night I went to was Home on the Range (geddit!) which is the last Friday of the month and "is a night of soul, funk, hip hop, house, reggae and lots in-between for the dancefloor hungry" according to the people that run it. I had a great time and everyone was totally up for dancing. Actually with the dated function room and slightly older crowd it felt like we'd crashed a wedding but nobody minded as they were all too busy dancing. They really did dance hard, it felt like a very sweaty night in Ibiza. And I was reminded when they played some house music that this is the generation that invented clubbing. It's also cheap. It's a fiver to get in. Then I paid another fiver for a pint of Heineken and a can of red stripe. Yes to social club prices! They also let you bring your glass of beer outside(!) when you need to cool down at the picnic tables. The woman on the ticket desk said when I asked "there's not that many rules around here". Probably because the crowd came to dance and have a good time. I'm going back soon.

But prices were very cheap! 2 full sized snooker tables, clean toilets. decor wise it needs a revamp. I would have thought if they were trying to sell themselves as a really exclusive venue they would have a very luxury feel but instead it's basically just a large black room with rather unattractive painted over pipes etc. Another weird thing is that they had a lady working in the loo which is something I associate more with trashy superclubs like Oceana (not that I didn't love Oceana) but then again I'm not exactly an expert on private members clubs. Cocktails are pricey (£9 mark) and although both the espresso martini and Long Island Ice Tea were decent they were not amazing. Service is good, partly because there are an incredible amount of people working here. This was especially noticeable because it was practically empty. Booths I think are a £100 minimum spend which is probably a reason for this and the fact that the crowd were mostly over 30. More exclusive booths (with curtains etc) have a higher minimum spend. The dancefloor area is also the main thoroughfare on one side of the bar (to the toilets) but as there weren't many people there was plenty of room to dance. They really need a better DJ though, this one couldn't mix, played a weird combination of songs instead of focusing on one genre for a few tracks to keep people on the dancefloor, and spent a lot of the night talking to some girl (this girl was also spotted chatting up a bartender and a bouncer which would have been unremarkable were it not for the fact that she was with only one other girlfriend who was therefore abandoned on a bar stool for most of the night, except when I forced her to dance with us. And she seemed lovely, so this was really not cool of the first girl. NOT COOL). So, all the Milton Club needs is more plush decoration, more interesting cocktails, a better DJ and some customers, and it's good to go.

First off I really have to say that the Milton Club isn't really my scene at at all, anywhere that…read morehas more bouncers than punters for the first couple of hours it's open doesn't fit in with how I like to live my life. So for some people this place might be their idea of heaven with a kind of feeling of exclusivity and a battle to get in but I'm much more comfortable in places that seem welcoming and where you can be yourself (this is a private members club but from what I worked out, anyone can sign up and attend) I was down here for a party I was appearing at with another social network in Manchester and in advance the party planner Joanne was excellent, friendly and easy to deal with. As I was more of a punter later on and it was rammed I experienced the chaos of staff running around trying to serve people desperate for a drink, even just paying my tab seemed like a mission. I thought the beer selection was pretty tame and with Sam Adams being their best beer it shows that not much thought has gone into the selection as it's all a bit dated. In fact the whole bar and menu had a massive feeling that I was stuck in a 90's time warp (it was quite apt that 90's popstress Gabrielle was doing a show at this bar later on...) It is what it is - but I doubt I'll ever have the desire to go back unless I have a severe personality transplant.

In fact a guy just walked around with a big barrel of tasty looking biscuits offering everyone some - is this utopia!?! The place is huge and had so much room to sit, move and just be lived in - the people it attracts all look to be in the same boat with their macbooks/creative mindset and within 5 mins I've got chatting to my neighbour in our plush leather chairs about how great it is that you don't feel under pressure to drink up and go like a standard coffee shop! I'll be back, probably most days! Make sure you get here soon :-)

Well the other day I changed that, and I have to say I was dead impressed with this place! The concept is fantastic, you pay for the time you spend there and in that time can eat and drink as much coffee and cake as you like. Some people think the concept is odd, and I can appreciate it's a little different, but look at it economically and you're practically stealing from them! I genuinely felt guilty when I paid about £2.80 for 45 minutes of time, in which I'd consumed 3 slices of cake and 2 coffees. Thats the norm for me though, not that I'm a greedy pig, just that if I'm sat working for an hour (anywhere) I'll need a couple of coffees and something to nibble on. And let me tell you this for free, it costs a damn sight more than £2.80 even if I'd make the cake myself at home! I do wonder how they cover expenses however I believe a lot of volunteer work is involved and if you do volunteer, you get free time in the place - wins all round!

My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off, being £1 entry, sold it for me. Doubles for £3, a range of sambucas £1.50? Messy. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

You can find out all international related things here, from learning languages to help with work, to where to go if you're new to Manchester to advice about living in a foreign city. Being British, I find the most appealing aspect of the International Society to be its great café, which is probably the best place to get lunch out of all the university cafes and eateries.
