If you do choose to go to this lousy excuse of a dentist, be sure you check your insurance claims and do not pay anything out of pocket until you have verified with your insurance. He also does really shoddy dental work. My current dentist is bewildered by the permanent retainer he has clumsily connected to my teeth with globs of cement. He missed cavities during my husband's check-ups. Literally find any other dentist in Boston and you'll be way better off.

His staff was friendly, his office was professional, and I regarded him as fondly as a dear uncle. Recently, though, a problem developed. About four years ago, I stopped living in my childhood home and moved up to Boston. For as good as Dr. Schwartz was, taking a day off from work and 250 mile drive to see him seemed a bit much. So I was in the market for a new dentist, and Dr. Davis was recommended to me by a good friend. I checked the website, called his office and got the ball rolling. His receptionist guided me through sign-up and form-fillout via e-mail in the weeks leading up to my first non-Schwartz appointment since I was in first grade, and I found myself oddly looking forward to the experience. Dr. Davis' office is located in Copley Square, about half a block from the T stop on Boylston Street. The waiting room reminded me a bit of an alcove at L'Espalier, or the sitting area in the apartment of someone I'm too cool to hang out with. Music (decidedly not soft rock...I think it may have been trance... again, I'm not cool enough to be here) wafted from mounted wall speakers and a wealth of interesting and recent magazines were neatly stacked on the glass table. I petted the adorable dog that sat on the floor next to my legs. Dr. Davis himself signed me in, as I went at 5:30 and his receptionist had left for the day. I was in his chair at 5:15, which marked the first time I've ever been treated early at the dentist. What followed was the agony of having two and a half years of plaque removed ultrasonically from my lower teeth. This was no fault of Dr. Davis, who made the entire process as painfree as he could (including gum gel that numbed up a fair portion of my mouth). No, this was the fault of my decidedly lax flossing routine. Regardless, he soldiered on and finished his cleaning and x-rays, sending me on my way with a prescription for medicated mouthwash. This is a classy operation, with a lot of care given to the comfort and ease of his patients. If you want a dentist, let this guy be your dentist. Dr. Schwartz, I think I've moved on.

It is no news that going to the dentist is not on anyone's list of "fun free time" endeavors. Being put at ease is important to me after a lifetime of dental maladies. Dr. Steve Morrison is an excellent communicator- if he has to tell you what you don't want to hear- it is served up in a compassionate, compelling, and direct way. He is also quite efficient. He advised that the tooth had been repaired several times before and would need a crown. Because I was leaving state soon, he recommended that I find a new dentist in MA to do the work. Dr. Stokowski was a short walk from where I was staying at the time, and seemed as good of a dentist as any. Boy, was I wrong! First off, when I stopped by to make the appointment, I gave them a copy of my insurance card with the dental info on the back. The receptionist was rude, but I chalked it up to a bad day. I went in later for the appointment, and even though his website says his office is "state of the art", his equipment was new, literally, in the 1950's. I told him what my previous dentist had recommended and asked for a crown. He inspected the tooth, and said he was just going to do a large filling. He seemed to think that was all I needed, so I agreed, against my better judgement. He did the work, and I was numb and comfortable enough, until he dropped the drill on the floor, picked it up, and went to put it right back into my mouth. No way. After he cleaned it up, he finished the work, and I went to the receptionist to check out. She asked me if I had a dedicated dental insurance card, and I told her no, our insurance does not issue one. She asked me to get a phone number and I explained it is listed on the back of the medical ID card I gave her. She insisted that I call and get her more information. I went home, and within 15 minutes was on the phone getting her the information she had asked for. I hung up with the insurance, called her back, and proceeded to give her the information. She refused to take it by phone, insisting that I write it down, and bring it back to her. I hung up and refused to make the trek back just because she couldn't lift a pen. I then went into the bathroom to inspect the work that had been done in my mouth. The filling was several shades darker then the rest of my teeth! Like VERY noticeably darker. I was not happy. Not too long later, I got a bill from the office demanding that I pay for the full amount. I wrote the insurance information on it, and sent it back. I got three more bills, before they finally billed the insurance, and then the next bill included a copy of the denial letter and asked for a full payment. The reason given on the insurance denial letter? "Practitioner has not provided this office with enough information to determine necessity of procedures." I circled this, wrote "DO YOUR JOB" on the bill, and sent it back. It being now months later, and having finally been able to move into our new home, I found a permanent dentist in our new home town. I scheduled cleanings for the whole family, and when it came to my turn, the dentist mentioned how much darker the tooth was than the others, and then proceeds to tell me that it's going to have to have a crown done because there is a cavity under it. Less than one year after I had it done in Strokowski's office, and now I have to pay for the filling AND the crown I had originally asked for. And I FINALLY got a bill yesterday showing that they got my insurance squared away. At this point, however, I am not sure I want to pay for the "work" they did. In summary, the office was antiquated, the dentist wanted to put dirty tools in my mouth, the receptionist was very rude every time I tried to work with her, and they don't want to be bothered with your insurance. Would I recommend this dentist to someone else? Not even my worst enemies. There's thousands of better dentists and my recommendation to you is to find one.

I called and they looked up my email in the system, took down my insurance card info but couldn't confirm whether or not they take my insurance (which is a major provider), and promised to call back to confirm. Didn't ever receive a call back and have been calling for days to no avail - no one answers the phone. I called a different practice who was able to confirm they take my insurance and book an appointment for me within minutes. It's a shame as Quality Dental is much closer to my home, but it's not worth committing to a practice that clearly doesn't care about its patients and do the things they say they're going to do.
