Writing a review of a fitness centre you signed up for in the last month of 2014 is like gushing to…read moreyour gal pals all too early about that guy you've been seeing and getting the warm fuzzies from. There's still that early days chance that it's all going to fall into a heap and you're left rejected or perhaps the one doing the rejecting. But, let's run with the current feeling of warm fuzzies and stay positive that this new relationship I'm having with a particular fitness centre is on the up and up. I'm a sick creature that loves spin classes. Unfortunately, unless you're willing to sign up to a gym Brisbane is lacking a dedicated spin studio. Maybe there's a business opportunity here?!? A Brisbane Soul Cycle. I digress. I didn't want to sign up for any ol' gym and after following Function Well for a while on Instagram I made a time to speak to their membership consultant being equally excited and afraid of what I was getting myself in for. The membership fee is slightly high but realistically no more than 1 or 2 coffees a day over the course of a week, and for the ability to attend three spin classes a week (more if my schedule allows), plus an infrared sauna on site, general gym equipment and a stack of other high intensity classes - it works for me. Yes, like any gym, there's the incredibly buff guys, there's the women who work out in full faces of makeup and there's the fitness folk that are rocking the Paleo thing like no body's business - but I'm yet to feel or be made feel out of place. In fact, although I'm a solo rider and keep to myself, I genuinely sense there's a great community vibe at the club and people are there to support one another through each class. If group training is your thing they regularly run 8-week challenges and have a cross fit-style studio around the corner that is open 24 hours a day. It's a little something for everyone. The space itself has been a few different gym chains in the time I've lived in Brisbane and as such it's not as sparkling new as other venues. The equipment is however and isn't any different from other gyms if you're familiar. The female change room is modern with lockers available, showers, hair dyers and even magazines. There's also a physio, nutritionist and creche on-site. If you're looking for a place to kickstart your new year resolutions or just need a mix up of your usual routine, based on the early day warm fuzzies, I'd say Function Well could well be the place to check out. In the mean time, I'm going to keep enjoying the feeling I get after I walk out of a class here. Clear mind and strong!

I registered for a 3 day free trial through their website, so I could get a feel for Goodlife…read moreChermside and I ended up signing up the next day. That's how much I liked it. Goodlife gym in Chermside has been open now for about 5 years and is still going strong. Being located in the shopping centre has its disadvantages, especially with the parking situation at Chermside, but I can walk from home in about 20 minutes and I think I'll avoid driving there on weekends to avoid the parking nightmare. The rooftop parking near the gym entrance is actually not too bad during the week, as most cars tend to avoid this tucked away corner of the rooftop. The gym itself is pretty damn swish. It is really huge. Rows and rows of cardio equipment, all in pretty decent condition. All the machines have TV screens and you can watch one of the many stations playing or you can plug in your iPhone or iPad using the plug to watch or listen to your own stuff. There's a ladies-only area too, which has a few cardio machines, pin weights and free weights. It's nice to have this little space in case the guys in the main weights area intimidate you. All new members get a free training session with a trainer, who goes over your goals and puts together a workout plan. You get another session every 8 weeks to review and update your workout, which is a nice feature that many chain gyms don't offer. Goodlife at Chermside have just started offering Home Memberships, which is a cheaper weekly rate but means you don't have access to every Goodlife around Brisbane. But you can always upgrade your membership later on, if you need this access. The timetable of classes is pretty impressive too. The summer timetable has 43 classes and 12 cycle classes over a week, at various times throughout the day from 5:45am to 7:45pm. Both the cycle room and the class room are really large, so I think you would always get a spot even during peak time. They also have a sauna and steam room, and have child-minding services from 8am to midday every day except Sunday, and 4pm to 8pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. A new feature is the TRX Suspension Training, which Goodlife in Chermside offers. Most of the trainers are now TRX qualified, and you train in small teams.

It's not been long open, so everything in the gym is new, with all your standard cardio machines, weight and TV screens. I recently canceled my membership because I bought a bike and am hoping to get my exercise through cycling, but I'd recommend Snap Fitness to anyone looking for a cheap, no-frills and convenient way to work out. Keep in mind that you have 30 days of membership left once you decide to cancel and direct debit payments will continue to made from your account until the 30 days is up. Also, Snap West End offers a free introductory week so you can try before you buy. There's 24 hour swipe card access to any of their gyms in Australia, and overseas if you travel. This place definitely isn't big. If you're into floor exercises, classes or flexing in front of a mirror, it's probably not the place for you. But it's well stocked with cardio machines, free weights and cable weights, some floor mats and weird ball and stretchy stuff that I don't understand (chekkit, the gym buff in me coming out all technical like!) and if you get there outside peak hour, it's blissfully quiet.

Its is the reason why a lot of people live and work here, it is definitely part of the lifestyle. So why have I chosen Pure, and why do I stay loyal to them even when I have so much choice here in the area? I am going to say the innovation in the classes is what keeps me coming back keeping my membership current with them. A lot of gyms around here have the ho-hum run of the (les) mill(s) classes, which I find boring and repetitive whilst pure has a great range of self choreographed classes where the trainer is still very involved in what they deliver to you. You can choose from Reformer Pilates, to Yoga, light weights class, step, Cycle class to a Crankit class which utilised every muscle in your body whilst being suspended. Boxing also is available as well as my fave - Bounce! This is a high cardio class with dance moves performed on a mini tramp - it's so much fun you don't even notice the 500+ cals you burn during it. The also have a small studio of weights as well were you can employ a PT to really get your butt into gear - Pure is a great choice if you need a friendly environment to get yourself motivated without all the meatheads that normally abound in gyms.

I was advised I would continue to be charged a month of upfront gym membership fees (from 13th Nov) per contract, despite what has happened since 8th November Having been a loyal member for over 4 years, I am extremely disappointed as (expressed in my email to Pure Health on 13-Nov), I have always been a huge supporter of the style of gym, founder Marina's hands-on approach, the workshops, style & variety of classes Pure Health offers.

They took my mother and I around to check out their facilities. I noticed it was very empty for a Wednesday afternoon, but then again, perhaps most gyms are only packed in mornings and evenings of the weekdays and throughout the weekends? Not sure... But either way, it felt a little dead to me. This Fernwood is quite small and a little too packed for my liking. There are rooms upstairs where classes are held and on the lower level they have all the cardio equipment and the cycle room. The cardio equipment was not the latest, but in good enough shape (pun intended!). Due to their lack of Zumba classes and the overall sleepy atmosphere, I didn't end up joining. But that's just me, I wanted a gym a little bit more exciting and alive. This gym might suit other women who want a casual low key kind of gym with a slow paced vibe.

When I signed up over the phone, I was asked to turn up half an hour early (7pm) the following Monday before the "groove" class at 7.30pm that I wanted to do...in order to be shown around/orientated and have the health check. I was also told over the phone that my membership would begin on this evening. When I arrived at the desk at 7pm, the lady informed me that I was only down for a "paperwork appointment" at 7pm, and that I had to make another appointment for the orientation/health check. She also said that my membership had not yet started. I'm not sure why I would be booked into a five minute "paperwork appointment" at 7pm on a Monday night, when I could easily complete that at my actual orientation/health check appointment. I was at least still able to do the class, but was not shown where the rooms where, and had to find everything (bathrooms, studios etc) completely on my own! Not good. During the class: * The instructor would single women out * The instructor made us "partner up" at one stage - like we were in primary school. When i'm sweaty and gross I'm not really keen to partner up physically with other people!!!! * The instructor numbered us off into groups, and said that when she called our number, we would have to "strut into the middle and strike a sexy pose" - WTF. When I went to cancel my membership two days after joining during the "COOLING OFF PERIOD" I had to pay $100 to cancel my membership!!!!!!!! I had done ONE CLASS and been a member for two days! They even tried to get me to pay for the key which I had not even used once! The staff are rude and have no idea how to treat customers. I've spread the word about how terrible Fernwood Darra is. Don't waste your time or your money at this place!

Main reason was that I can easily walk to and from the gym as it's close by to where I live. I've been impressed with not only the facilities but the service delivered by the staff as well from the membership consultant to reception and the trainers. They have a variety of classes on to suit everyone whether its Zumba, bodyattack or even the small group training sessions. When you sign up with them, you can either have 3 sessions with a personal trainer for $75 (Normally costs $180) or the fitness program which is free to new members and you get 3 sessions with a group floor instructor. I chose to go with the fitness program as I didn't want to spend money on a personal trainer and much rather have the alternate option which is the fitness program in which all they basically do is show you how to use all of the machines the correct way and other exercises you can do to build up strength as well as knowledge on what you start achieving your own personal goals. At the end of your workout when you feel tired and muscles are sore, they have both a 25 m indoor heated pool, 2 spa's and a sauna as well or you can just jump in the showers in the change rooms which are just as good. Probably only down side is that Fitness First are an expensive gym to join but I personally would recommend people to consider getting a membership as you won't regret it and they also have lots of other things they offer their members whether its free coffee and tea, free wifi and lots of other stuff.
