I can't stress enough how hard it is to find hair dressers that knows how to handle coarse asian hair, especially in Pittsburgh. I was very satisfied with my hair cut, wash and blow dry. It was $40 + tips which was a bit overpriced but definitely worth it. The service was good except the guy who washed my hair can come off as a bit rude but totally understandable.lol. I think. Prices are low but the salon is dirty. They don't apply heat protection before drying your hair on high heat, which stresses me out. They will push you to pay in cash, which I understand since they're a small business, but the last time I went I tipped 40% on a service and the man and woman at the front desk scolded me and said it wasn't enough. read more

I came in to get a haircut and highlights. They were quite busy on a Saturday. Definitely call ahead to make an appointment. Although when I called, they didn't ask for my name, they just gave me a time. Overall, my impression was they were friendly, but not super professional. They spoke limited English, and weren't great at communicating what was happening. I asked them to try to match a certain color, but they didn't confirm and I think they over bleached my hair. It was actually patchy in areas. I was pleased with my haircut, but had to go home and basically re-dye/tone my hair. In my opinion, the junior staff who dyed my hair was inexperienced, and the senior staff overseeing it didn't correct it. Haircut was $40 and the highlight was $120. They did encourage a 20% tip. TLDR: this place has medieval and discriminatory views on gender. They insist on charging a woman with very short hair (a fade in need of a trim) a higher price for the exact same haircut and treatment on a man. Also quite rude. Avoid. I have a kickass barber in Seattle but decided to give Instyle a call since I was here and looking for a place that could cut Asian hair. They get one star for agreeing to accommodate a last minute walk-in. When I arrived, the receptionist could not be less bothered. After three verbal nudges from a nearby barber cutting a man's hair, the receptionist asked if I had an appointment. I said that I had called earlier, and he waved me to a woman. I asked if I could have then "men's haircut", which was cheaper than the "women's haircut," and she said no, then asked a man who seemed to be the owner in Chinese. The owner said no. I clarified in Chinese that I wanted the exact same haircut (short fade) as the male client in the chair, gesturing towards him. The answer was still no, and I said then I would not be getting my hair cut there. I asked him why, in Chinese - he said I was a woman so I would be charged more (for the exact same haircut). The general attitude was dismissive. I've told all my Chinese family and friends in Pittsburgh to avoid this place until prices are charged by haircut time/style and not by gender. If a man with long hair wanted a haircut I doubt they would be charged the "man's price". It's 2023. A salon that keeps antiquated and discriminatory pricing practices will be left in the dust. Unfortunately gender based pricing is only illegal in NYC (2020 women's agenda ordinance, enforced by NYDCA) and California (Unruh Act) - however, it's irrelevant what "everyone else" is doing, it's irrelevant what's "standard procedure." If a practice is unfair, it's unfair. I found an interesting comment from "TrashPandaPatronus" on reddit that I think makes a fair argument: "she ordered the man's haircut, the stylist should be able to fill that order regardless of her genitals. If there was a restaurant that sold hamburgers for $5 and cheeseburgers for $10 but women were only allowed to order cheeseburgers even if they ask for no cheese that would be ludicrous - the chef knows full well they're making a hamburger." read more

I would've rated 2 stars, but I feel like part of it is my fault. Like, I would rate Squirrel Hill's Supercuts above this place. It probably would've been better if I could speak Chinese (stylist couldn't competently communicate in English). I got my hair cut shorter with layers. They were a bit top heavy (kind of clunky) but okay. The thing I couldn't stand was that, when I was like 'this seems kind of okay,' it was time to get my bangs cut and... I mean, I showed the stylist a picture and was told (by another stylist who translated for me) that he knew what to do based on my picture. Maybe I would've stopped him, but he told me to close my eyes (so the hair didn't get in, I suppose) and when he cut I was like ohhhh noooo. Yeah, he "bowl cut" my bangs. Worst cut ive ever gotten. Went a while ago to get a perm and they destroyed my hair and made it super dry and frizzy. A few months later got my hair done somewhere that actually knew what they were doing and it was so much better. Went to back here to just get a trim but they messed that up so bad too. I told the stylist to not take much off the length but he ended up cutting off almost all of the perm and now its way to short. Also, service is awful and way overpriced. read more

One star...I really want to give this place 0 stars. I came here because it was the only place that had an appt on a Sunday. Well now I know why. I called to make an appointment and the receptionist answered in the most unbothered tone "hello". Hello what? What place am I calling? This is a business not a home show some professionalism. I got my hair washed and the "stylist" didn't even bother to untangle my hair before giving me the most painful blow dry of my life. No leave in conditioner...nothing He even recommended in his native language that I should get a Keratin treatment because my hair is wavy and he was clearly struggling. Thats another thing, language barrier. My stylist did not speak english and I had a translator. He begins cutting my hair while half is dry and the other half is wet...um? Yeah...I should have said no to the hair trim at that point. Anyways, the layers in the front of my face are completely uneven. Worst haircut ever. I now have to avoid middle parts and wear my hair to the side (look at pictures). Please don't go here. Stopped by Instyle while I was in town for a much needed haircut. It was a busy Saturday afternoon, but the service was still good. I got a hair wash before my cut--a trim with layers. My stylist cut, dried, and cut again before blow drying my hair with with a round brush for the finished look. He asked how I wanted the length and my bangs throughout the cut, and he even got my unruly bangs to cooperate. Overall a great cut at a good value--$30 for everything. read more

I'm generally a very indecisive when it comes to pretty much anything but the whole team there was very patient helping me chose the right color for me and the right cut. It was almost an hour after closing time and we were still not done but they did not rush the process. The whole process was very meticulous and I'm very happy with the overall result. This is my family's second, my first visit. I did not cut my hair, just took my son. Last time when he went with his dad, they had a pleasant experience. People were nice and they washed my son's hair twice (before and after the cut). Today, I took him in. There was one customer having a cut, and another designer was resting, so the lady at the desk seemed to ask him to cut my son's hair. I am not Chinese so I don't know what she exactly said. They didn't wash my son's hair but I didn't think two washes were necessary anyway so I didn't ask. Hair turned out okay. But I was so unhappy with the attitude of the designer guy. Not sure if he was having an especially bad day. It was only 12pm and the store was far from busy, but maybe he was tired. But he did not say a word, let alone greet, any of us, or ask if we wanted it short or long. So I approached him and said I want it to be short but slightly longer along the center. Now the guy threw a glance at me and did not say a word. No question, no nodding or even shrugging. He just simply ignored me. There could have been reasons why he did not speak but he had no intention to share or make his customer feel better. The impression I got was that he wasn't happy to do a $15-hair cut. Why offer the service in the first place? When the cut was over, they did not wash my son's hair, but by then, I was so unhappy so I didn't bother to ask. I did leave a tip($5) because child haircut only costs $15. I honestly plan not to return to this place ever again. read more

I went to InStyle in search of a Japanese hair straightening treatment, and honestly had a great experience there. I am really shocked at the other reviews that are negative. People need to remember that this is an Asian salon... of course English is not their first language, but everybody speaks hair. No one is being rude to you. The younger girl at the desk was very kind to me - there was a spot my boyfriend could sit with me while I got this done across my chair. I believe the straightening treatment was around $200-250 ish for my length of hair, and I also got it dyed and trimmed... This is the first place that actually trimmed the amount of hair I wanted! Most of the salons I went to go crazy and snip like 5 inches off, ugh. I wish I would have gotten the name of the person who did my hair - his chair is the first on the left when you walk in, but he was very talented! To give an idea of what I wanted done and the breakdown of the experience, I walked in and was greeted for my appointment at noon really fast. I was there from 12pm-5pm for the treatment, dyeing of hair, and the cut. This is to be expected if you want all of this done! I think the total was $330-ish, but I left a pretty big tip (I think it came out to $400). About four different people were helping with the straightening of my hair since I have SO much, expect two people to be working on it for most of the time since they have to straightening a little section of the hair at a time. Anyways, the staff were all very friendly. Just remember if there is a language barrier, there is someone there who will know what you are talking about, and they will get someone there to answer your questions. My hair is really important to me, but I felt like they gave my undivided attention, and I'm extremely happy with the results and for the price! It did smoothed my hair, but I end up getting my wavy hair completely straightened (after they promised me that my hair would look "only slightly straight"). The barber was sitting in front me and EATING WATERMELON while I was having my treatment. On top of that, the product they use is probably super cheap and toxic, it smells awful and I was literally crying because of the s during the entire process. They also treated my hair brutal. SO MUCH of my hair was pulled off. The price is unreasonable high too, I spent $200, plus tips, for a result I don't even like. Just DON'T GO!!! read more

I came here about one year ago for a haircut. Overall experience is disappointed because of lack of communication. I had to push and push for more communication. I came in before the scheduled time and they immediately sent me to the back of the store without telling me what's going on. I realized they wanted to shampoo my hair before cutting. No word after my request! This is good since most places did not offer such service unless you request. This would be better if they would explain before hands. The hairstylist did not ask any of my expectation--how short, what style, any layer,...no. No conversation at all!!!!! He just started cutting and appeared to have his own ideas without telling me. I had to tell him on my own but still go no response if he understood or heard me. After several attempts, he started to defend his decision. NO You didn't have defend yourself but just tell me what you were going to do with my hair. I got my hair done in April, sorry I haven't posted my review til now in June. Anyways, soon as I came in I was welcomed very well, take a seat and consulted me on what I wanted which was balayage ombré look. They tried their best to give me what I want. 2 people had to work on my hair, yeah I have a lot of hair and it's difficult for any hairstylist to work on. The process was bleaching, stripping the dark color out of my hair. Then they washed my hair then started to put colors and toners in my hair. At the end of the day the color was okay, but my hair was really dry, I think they should have put some type of hair mask or something to make my hair soft and shiny but due to the bleaching process I understand it had to be fried by the end. I was there from 1:30pm til closing and they even stayed late for me. He tried his best to blow dry and straighten my hair but it's okay, but weeks after I just put some hair mask on and my hair is getting healthier and I've been getting many compliments on my hair. So I do recommend any one who has hair like mine thick ( I think it can be compared to 3 head of hair in one) and long like mine and want to get it colored and tone, check this place out. But patience is key if it doesn't turn out how you want just let them know they'll make effort to accommodate you. Hope this helped, I know it's a lot. read more

I walked in for a haircut. The first stylist quickly asked me to sit down and started to cut my hair without asking what kind of style I would like. I told him that it would be a basic trim. He starting cutting my hair, and it was completely different from what I told him, not only my previous style was ruined, the hair was 2 inches shorter than what I asked for. The stylist didn't apologize at all but criticized me for having too much hair and that my hair was too thick for him to cut.... I left the salon with a terrible haircut and had to call the salon again to get a solution. Here is the good part, they quickly made another appointment for me with the stylist Feng. Feng recut my hair and did a fabulous job. The cut was rather trendy. I didn't think that my already too-short hair could be saved again. I was really overdo for a proper haircut. My hair was down to my butt and was looking scraggly. I resolved to do my internet research for a good stylist and found that not all salons in the Pittsburgh area provided a work portfolio to peruse except Instyle Salon. The InStyle Salon had over 100 pics of gals with hair similar to mine and I was quickly convinced that I would more than likely be happy with whatever I walked out with. I showed Kevin a style that I liked and he sat me down for a top notch hair cut experience. Kevin skillfully snipped the dead ends away and gave my hair a u-shape curve then shaped my ends snipping inwards giving my hair movement. This place is quality and the prices are reasonable. Feng did a tremendous job with my hair! I honestly could not be happier with my hairstyle. My friend recommended this place to me because she knew I'm uber picky when it comes to picking the "right" stylist and hair salon. I've paid up to $100 for just a haircut at other places before and it still wasn't up to my standard. My haircut at Instyle hair salon was only $30!!!!! It took Feng about 45 minutes to 1 hour to wash, cut, and blow dry it. He wanted to make sure I'm happy with the style. He was very meticulous during the whole process.
