Pageboy Salon is an absolutely beautiful salon in a fully renovated former house. The owner Dana is absolutely wonderful and personable. Conversation is very upbeat. The atmosphere is very progressive and open to everyone. They are very meticulous with keeping up with covid protocols and keeping their workers and customers safe. Every cut I've had from Dana I have absolutely loved!! From start to finish every experience with her has been wonderful. I love Pageboy Salon and my hairdresser Ashley. I've been to quite a few of the different trendy hair salons around Pittsburgh and Pageboy is my favorite. I just started going to Pageboy last year and have the pleasure of getting my hair done by Ashley. When I first met her we went through a few pictures of different hair colors, I picked my favorite and Ashley was able to match the color pretty much identically to the picture. I get my hair dyed black with bright dark blue highlights. Ashley does a great job with the color and it lasts a good while before it starts to fade. She also does a great job with the cut. I LOVE this place. It's a very warm and welcoming environment and super LGBTQ+ friendly. Everyone works as a team and it shows. Kat was my stylist, but the assistants in the salon are also angels (and give a damn good scalp massage). I was nervous going to a new salon at first but now I look forward to it. Immaculate cut, immaculate and talented colour work. Kat really worked with me to figure out what I want, and on my next trim to tame some unruly bits of hair with some skillful blending. Why is this a four and not a five? A trim and a touch up to my colours (2 colours) cost me $275. I'd like to get my hair poked at about once every 6-8 weeks, but I just can't afford it. The styling I've had here is worth every dollar, but I might have to switch because it's just a little beyond what I can do on a regular basis, and that makes me sad. read more

While I absolutely loved my first color/cut/style, I have to be honest and knock it down a notch based on my 2nd visit. I wanted to love it just as much but the bar was set awfully high by the 1st visit. I ended up not liking the color (too dark and the single process vs. the highlights just gave it no dimension at all) nor the cut (bangs way too short and style just not what i wanted based on the first style). Now, I'm being fair. I really wasn't happy at all -- my hair is my key to self-confidence and my image; however, I realize I have accountability, too, to make sure my stylist understands what I want and (important here) I don't cave in to what my stylist wants. I knew I didn't want the original style this time -- I didn't like it so flat and straight and hugging my face. And, I did express that but my stylist was so knowing the first time around so I became convinced her suggestions of just a little tweaking were in order. And, I helped picked the colors and agreed to a single process vs. highlights. Soooooooo, what's the prob, eh? Wahhhh!!!! I don't like it!! To be fair, my stylist was more than willing to reschedule a re-do and she did work me in. The problem is many -- by choosing a popular stylist, she's busy so the re-do is several more days away than I want to wait and I'm not a fan of re-dos after only the 2nd visit. That just leads to tension and wondering if the re-do will be any better. Going to the salon is supposed to be something to look forward to, not dread. I have to admit to fearing the stylist more than the dentist so a re-do is not really up my alley. I made the appointment but then cancelled and went with option 2 -- a salon that takes walk-ins so I could have an instant fix. Lesson learned over and over but can't seem to fix: find a way to be in-synch with my stylist at every step. read more

After looking everywhere for someone to cut my short hair, I went to Amanda at Pageboy on a recommendation from a complete stranger (whose hair I happened to love). I went to her after having grown out my last (shockingly horrifying) haircut for 12 weeks. Over the last 4 MJ this she has been helping me to grow out I to a cut I can love. Pageboy, since they do lots of short styles for people, Pageboy does cheaper and shorter appointments for in between when you just need a touch up and your hairline cleaned up. I am all about independent boutiques and small business. This little place surely has what it takes to bring Pittsburgh the flare that larger cities have. There is an assortment of tops, skirts, pants, shorts, and all the upcycled garments you might want to try on. I admired many of the super wide vintage belts in several designs and colors! My absolute favorite is vintage costume jewelery and big rings! I call these items my trinkets and I collect them with fervor. I found several pieces here to add to my collection but purchased a huge round button ring with copper plating and these long dangling chandelier earrings with brassy accents to match. All summer I have been showing these off and the ring one of my favorite trinkets, if I am going out of town so are these two. I have vintage on the brain so it must be time to head back and check out the amazing sales rack. Plus I need my ring fix! read more

I have curls and lots of hair and I've been looking for a stylist in Pittsburgh who knows how to cut my type of hair. The first time I had a haircut at Pageboy was with the owner, Dana, and loved it. She did what I asked for and it was great, she styled my hair and I was very happy. The second time I decided to pick a different stylist who took her time to talk to me and find out what I wanted (I was thrilled) the problem with that is that it takes too much time out of the hour I have with her and when it was time to dry and style my hair, it was done by the girl who washed my hair; who didn't know what the sylist and I talked about. She started brushing my curls (a big NO with my hair type) and put so many products in my hair that I had to wash it, it felt "sticky". Not sure if I'll go back again. I got the impression all the stylist leave the finish look of styling to someone else. read more

I loved that Pageboy does separate pricing for short hair (why should my partner - who has shorter hair than me - get his hair cut for less!?) and was so lucky to be able to get an appointment later in the week with Shane. I was a tiny bit nervous when I heard they're a barber, but my fears were totally unfounded - they did an INCREDIBLE job on my hair! This store has a mish mosh of just about everything. You want vintage clothing, they've got it, you want new apparel, they've got it, you want reworked vintage that's now "new...the owner actually makes it! You want local Pittsburgh designers, they sell 'em! You want to get your hair did? Head to the back where there's a salon waiting for you! I can't review the salon part, but I can say that I've been in here multiple times for clothing and it's always a fun experience. They have some pretty awesome 70's and 80's vintage dresses that I'm surprised they were able to scoop up (and I'm sure doesn't last long in the store). The prices are pretty standard for vintage from $25-50 and all newer stuff under $50. They also have a plethora of jewelry, again both old, new and reworked. A lot of it is quirky, like real glasses attached to beads and old vintage pins reworked into necklaces. I really dug the reworked vintage. There was some beautiful pieces that worked well together. A little pricey, but I'd say worth it for how unique it was. As Kat M said, there's also a ton of really awesome rings. One that I thought was super cute was miniature animals made into rings. Pageboy has it all, it's a really cool shop run by some really cool people. There is also a salon in the back, but I haven't used it. Also, they recently celebrated their 1-year anniversary with 20%+ off most items and a lot of $10 items - most of which were NOT taken off the sale racks(I don't think anyways). I'm a loyal Pageboy client of three years. I love the stylists, the central location, and the cute and relaxed ambiance. My hair is very thick and wavy (but not quite curly,) so I've been a victim of plenty of bad haircuts that left me with a bushy, hard to style mop. The stylists at Pageboy (usually Amanda) do an amazing job working with my hair type and admittedly lazy day-to-day styling habits to create the perfect style that looks great and gracefully grows out (since I usually stretch my haircuts about three months apart.) I've been going to Brittany at Pageboy for about a year now, and it's been a dream. I'm particularly persnickety when it comes to my haircuts, and Brittany has delivered exactly what I wanted each time. The store itself is a mix between vintage boutique and hair salon. When I wait for cuts, I can't help but browse their selections--always tempted to make a purchase to match my new 'do. They have some really awesome jewelry and both men and women's fashion. In the back is the salon section of Pageboy. The space has about 4 cutting stations, and each time I've stopped by they are full. I wouldn't usually comment on this, but the hair wash before the cut is always DIVINE! I never noticed the wash before coming to PB, but the washers are amazing, and I'm always relaxed and ready for a trim by the time I get to the chair. Back to Brittany. She does men and women's haircuts, and specializes in a curly/wave cut for women. When I came in about a year ago, I was having more bad hair days then good. Brittany listened to what I wanted, and together we created a cut that works best for my hair and face shape. Her suggestions for styling have only made cuts better! My only complaint? Her schedule books up so quickly, so I'm sure to make a reservation for my next visit immediately after my cut. read more

Chauncey is the absolute best. I just moved to Pittsburgh and was nervous about getting a haircut, since I've been seeing the same stylist for my entire life (if you're ever in Hockessin, Delaware, Seiko at Beauty Bar by Seiko does amazing work). But I decided to just go for it since my hair was super foul looking. This is literally the best haircut I have ever had. Chauncey was so sweet and friendly, and she also really went out of her way to show me how to recreate the look when I'm doing my own hair. She also somehow customized the photo I showed her to be proportionate to my face shape and hair type. The salon is funky and has a great atmosphere. Oh, and you can buy cute vintage clothes while you're waiting (or after you're done). The prices are also really, really reasonable (I have never seen better than $50 for a woman's haircut by an experienced stylist). The staff was professional and friendly and made me feel comfortable. I'm so glad to have found this salon! read more

Everyone turned out totally gorgeous! Brittany was very attentive to my needs in making sure that my look was exactly what I wanted and welcomed any feedback I had as we worked through my trial. She was also flexible and responsive (especially the morning of the wedding!) The people who work here are fabulous. Sara is great for a cut & conversation, and a few months ago I gave her free reign to do whatever color she wanted with my hair -- it turned out awesome. She did some really nice subtle highlights, and it was one of the best color jobs I've had from anywhere. I highly recommend her if you're looking for a new colorist! I often bring my dog in with me for a haircut or a little shopping in their boutique section, and everyone is super sweet to her (and they have dog biscuits in the back). There is a great assortment of vintage-inspired items (some new, some used) in the boutique that changes pretty frequently, and the prices are very reasonable. I have bought some of my favorite pairs of earrings and a purse that I wore for years from here. The best part is that, if you're early for a salon appointment, you can shop while you wait for your haircut. Definitely beats flipping through magazines! read more

I tried this salon for the first time a few years ago after one too many bad haircuts with weird layers. From my research it seemed like the "vibe" here was somewhere I wanted to be and a place where I could trust whoever cut my hair not to make me look like I was from another decade. I've been going back ever since to see Kat for a basic, but great haircut. She listens to my feedback, shows me how to style my cut when she's done, and is laid back and easy to talk to. I decided getting fewer high quality haircuts is a better investment than trying out lots of cheap places and always being disappointed! It's not the cheapest haircut you'll ever get, but it's worth it to not have haircut anxiety the whole time. Instead it's actually a pleasant experience! The salon is beautiful and the parking situation is improved since they moved from Lawrenceville. They also have awesome products for sale! read more

I am so happy to discover and finally go to Pageboy Salon! Even though I have lived in Pittsburgh for almost five years, I had not settled on a stylist that I loved. I primarily went to two different people who work for a popular beauty and cosmetics retailer. We would start off well but things went south and became hit or mess after the first appointment or two. I had multiple re-cuts and absolutely dreaded going to get my hair cut. I made my Sunday afternoon Pageboy appointment six weeks prior with Kate. Yes, she is literally booked that far out on the weekends. I read all the stylistls bios online, and when I read Kate's information and specialties, I knew that she'd be perfect. I waited a couple weeks for the appointment, and crossed my fingers that nothing would disappoint. And nothing did! The environment was laid back with a local feel. Kate was sweet and easy to talk to. My haircut looked great after Kate cut and styled it, and I loved it even more once I got home and had the chance to play with it. I'm so pleased! I heard good things about Pageboy so I made an appointment with Brittney. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted but had a "vision" of going from my dishwatery blonde to a brighter golden all over blonde. But, since I am generally pretty laid back about my hair and always open to suggestions I decided to go with her idea of an hombre style, blending from a reddish blonde on top to a lighter blonde at the bottom instead. She did a good job, and it looked okay, but it didn't really have the pop I was looking for. A week or so passed and it was bothering me so I decided to call and ask what she could do to get me closer to my original "vision". I was happy when she was extremely accommodating and scheduled me for an appointment the very next day. Also she went the extra mile to stay open after hours just to fit me in. The result was right on the money. It looks fabulous and I couldn't be happier. I will definitely be going back to britt again, she is one of the rare stylists I have found who is willing to work with you to achieve an above average style that really suits you. I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore, but I almost wish I did so I could still get my hair cut at Pageboy! Moving to a new city with many more options (and higher prices) made me realize what a great find this salon was. I have difficult, wavy hair that's really thick but fine in texture. On top of that I'm very picky, so getting my hair cut with someone new is always a nerve-wracking experience. If you're like this too, you should make an appointment with Chauncey! She is great at listening to what clients want, which in my experience is so rare, but also great at setting expectations based on hair type. Over the appointments I had here, she only got better at working with my hair type. Plus, she has great beauty advice! I never would have thought that a shower filter could change my life/hair/skin. She also did my color correction, which was no easy feat. I had chemically colored red hair + a few layers of henna, and she worked with me through a couple of appointments to get me closer to my natural light brown color with some balayage highlights. My hair felt really healthy considering how much color she had to lift out of my hair, because she took the time to gradually change my color. On top of all this, she's a nice person to hang out with while you're sitting in a chair for 3 hours undoing a multitude of hair-related mistakes! From what I observed, the other stylists are doing really great work too. The space is also really comfortable and cute. I really can't think of any bad things to say. I think that all of the stylists have their own flair for personal artistry and they make an effort to help new clients to find the stylist that's right for them. Was looking forward to trying this place. My cousin is a regular, as are a few friends and a sibling, and I heard great things. Hair cuts look great on Instagram, so this review is purely for scheduling since I will not actually get a chance to try their services. Being called twice to change around an appointment seems to speak to some scheduling/management issues. I made an appointment for today last week. I was then called a couple days later and asked if I could be flexible and change my appointment time because there was too big of a gap in the stylists' schedule. I agreed. No prob, I said! I was then called today when I was already on the road to be told that the stylist was sick, and would need to cancel, within an hour and a half of my appointment time. Now, I get stylists get sick. I'd never want someone to have to come in when they are not feeling well, and I applaud the place for taking their staff's health seriously. But it's a long drive for me into the city. Being told of a cancelation when I'm already underway wasn't cool. It would have been good to know earlier in the day, so I didn't waste a lot of time getting ready, digging my car out of snow, etc. I had already rearranged my day once to accommodate the first time change, and I couldn't rearrange it again. I'm in town to take care of my mother who just had surgery to remove lung cancer, and today was the day when I had others in place to give me relief for a few hours. What was going to be a moment to get some time away to recoup a little during a stressful time turned out to be pretty disappointing. And with such little notice, I don't really have enough time to get a walk-in anywhere else good. So, yeah... not cool. Two stars because I know they do good work, but I think they should take a better look at how they schedule appointments, and I think management should be aware of it. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the stylist thought she could still do it? But I don't believe that she didn't know she was too ill only an hour and a half before my appointment. I hope the stylist recovers, but right now I guess I feel like, unless you are suffering intense pain from a serious lung operation to remove cancer you're well enough to make a simple call to say you're sick IN THE MORNING. read more
