In memory care, where residents often rely heavily on guided assistance, this level of staffing makes it difficult to ensure everyone's nutritional and emotional needs are met. I had no idea what to expect when I when I was sent to Encompass Health for rehabilitation after my neurosurgery. How fortunate I was to be treated at Encompass Health facility in Libertyville, IL. Everyone is treated respectfully and they truly care about your well being and want you to get well. The therapists encourage you and work with whatever your limitations may be to enable you to get well enough to succeed and meet your goals. Therapy is conducted in the gym. Everyone is rooting for everyone else including patients. The entire staff whether it be medical, therapeutic, food service, cleaning staff, and office staff always greet you with a smile and encouragement. I want the CEO, Gemma Fletcher to know (and I am sure she does) that the entire staff are rock stars, and their concern for the patients is genuine and sincere. I did not realize how much of an emotional high the ringing of the bell gave me when I finished therapy and was getting ready to be discharged. As much as I would love to call out by name all those that helped me during my stay, I regret that I may inadvertently omit some names. You can not find a better facility in the northern suburbs…read more I have to apologize for taking so long to write this review. I was a patient on 6/24/24 after having hip replacement surgery. The facility was run so efficiently that I NEVER had to wait for someone to respond to my call. The food was fresh and good. I never had to wait for medication, which was always on time, the correct pill, and dosage. Did I mention how beautiful the facility was? Not only beautiful but very clean. The staff was incredible, they always had a smile on their faces, which told me they were happy to work there. Physical therapy helped me to recover as quickly as I did. Everyone was very patient and took time to explain what I needed to do. The therapist stayed with me to make sure I was doing it correctly. After seeing the horrible facility in Streamwood, my sister-in-law is currently at, I realized just how lucky I was to have been at the best facility in the northern suburbs. Hands down, you can not find a better facility in the northern suburbs!!

My husband was in the late stages of pulmonary fibrosis and was in the hospital for pneumonia. He was getting treatment but getting weaker. The doctor that signed the papers insisted he needed rehab. He should have been in hospice. He was released to Avantara for rehab. This place was a nightmare from the start. I left my cell number on a piece of paper by the phone. My husband said they threw away the number right after I left. When I went to visit two days later my husband kept saying he could not breath. His lunch tray was not touched. I asked one of the CNAs and she said the instructions said he didn't need help and she would to contact the doctor. When asked why my husband was so out of it she shrugged her shoulders and walked out of the room. He could hardly move and couldn't even hold a spoon. I asked the male nurse on the floor to listen to his lungs because they were crackling and he did nothing. They never checked his oxygen levels knowing he had pneumonia. Next day he was worse and they did nothing until an occupational therapist came to do therapy. I told her how my husband was barely coherent and could not breath and the staff was refusing to help him. She went got help. The male nurse finally checked the oxygen and it was dangerously low. He went and got two more nurses. One kept saying the oximeter was wrong. The other nurse called 911. My husband was admitted to ICU and died 3 days later.

The social worker explained there is nothing governing these places so it is important to go visit them in person before choosing. My brother and his wife live in Libertyville, IL. They had experience with Manor Care because his wife's mother had been a patient the year before. My Mother stayed at Manor Care aprox. 2 months. It was a wonderful experience. She was well cared for. The staff was incredible- caring, attentive, patient. The facility was well maintained. They offered simple but ever so important services like a hair salon. I can't say enough positive things about Manor Care in 2017. Flash forward to Manor Care 2021. My Mother had another fall and went there for 2 months. Nothing is the same. Mind you it's Covid Pandemic and I have taken that into consideration. But as of today I would not put my Mother back in Manor Care. This time around the staff was , let's just say that they need to hire people that have experience with old people. The current staff has no patience. They don't think helping a patient change their compression socks is part of their job.. My Mother weighs all of 96 lbs. She takes pride in her appearance. She's starting to get confused. They didn't care. They gave her too much miralax and she had an accident. They were not about to help her change. What made this so much worse was 1st the 2 week quarantine. My Mother was vaccinated as was my brother and myself. Even after the 2 week quarantine we were not allowed in person visits. We could go stand outside her window and talk to her on the phone.. The receptionist let my brother go inside in person one time. That was huge! I hope I don't get that person in trouble for writing this. But it made a big difference in my Mother's mental state. Due to covid there is no hair salon service, which to an older lady is so important... I cannot stress that enough. There is no Doctor for the patients or family to talk to . My Mother was in severe pain. NWC Hospital prescribed pain meds before they released her.. Manor Care said they didn't know about any meds and there is no Doctor there to handle this type of issue. My Mother takes a sleeping pill every night. Otherwise she cannot sleep, is up all night , has night terrors etc. Again, Manor Care didn't have any instructions to give her anything. Just trying to get ahold of my Mother's nurse(s) was next to impossible. I asked for a call back at their convenience, multiple times. I could not speak to anyone when I called no matter what time of the day. My Mother is not a big eater. She lost 13 lbs during this last stay. Four years ago Manor Care offered a Menu with choices for all 3 meals. Not anymore. My Mother can't afford a 13 lb weight loss. Manor Care is a family owned company. To the 2 brothers that run it: Please look into fixing these type of issues. My Mother just had another fall today and is in the hospital. It looks like she will need to be put in another aftercare. Manor Care is conveniently located 10 blocks from my brother's house. I dread the thought of my Mother going back there. Manor Care is very expensive. For the amount of money they get per patient - the level of care and service is absolutely terrible. I understand that Seniors can be difficult. Laws affect what the staff can and cannot do. I'm grateful my Mother made it home. I'm grateful she wasn't abused or hurt by the staff, which happens all the time in some of these places. They get away with it by paying off the families with a gag order settlement. It gets swept under the rug and the facilities aren't held accountable.
