But if I could choose five prominent characteristics to scratch the surface, they would be Bible, Leadership, Community, Humility, Christ-like love. From the very first 10 min, the first two characteristics were undeniable. Not only were the sermons thoroughly exposited, but even the worship time was peppered, devoted to the public reading of Scripture, Old Testament and New, and indiscriminate of a single verse or chapter. Next, the pastor came right out and addressed the situation with masks, etc. (this was 2021). He calmly, but clearly, stated the leadership's thought process of how they'll be interacting with public policy, and then extended welcome for each of us to act on our own convictions. Mask or not, our only objective here is to worship our Lord. That was so freeing in such a tense time! My wife and I have grown so much in our relationships with God - learning about and experiencing Him for who He is, not who we want Him to be. This is a small church, but that means everyone is here because they WANT to be. There's no show, not a ton of structured programs, just real life.

But I will try not to let my particular criticisms of modern Christianity affect my review too much (also, I don't want to run out of space). I first came to CBCCOC in the summer of 2007, right after graduating from university; I was squarely in the middle of emerging adulthood, not sure where I wanted to live, how to get a job, who would be my community, blah blah blah etc. I grew up in a Chinese Baptist church, so I was a little wary of visiting this church, which was the home church of one of my undergrad friends. The church has three congregations: English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. The first two meet at 9:30 AM, and the Cantonese meets at 10:45, with Sunday school sessions for various age and language groups following. There is a robust and thriving children's ministry, as well as plenty of opportunities to serve. The church is presently going through a building/expansion process, and the current facilities can be a little crowded. Attending the English worship service and its associated Sunday school and small groups, I felt welcomed and included by the people that I met through the fellowships, and many individuals took the time to reach out to me and make me a part of the community. Being an emerging adult in the church is an awkward stage, but there are ways to get connected; if nothing else, people care and are willing to listen. I recently came back to this church after a number of years away, and was shocked that so many people remembered me. Despite my present concerns and ideas regarding church, many of which are compounded by the paradox of being Christian, Chinese, and living in Irvine, the people in this church have been gracious and open to hearing my thoughts and comments in the context of small groups and fellowships. As in all churches, there are some cliques, people can be oblivious to others or overbearing, and a plentiful variety of the various quirks and idiosyncrasies that come with being a church made up of people. And although I do not always agree completely with how the church operates or what is taught from the pulpit (they are affiliated with the Southern Baptist denomination), I honestly believe that the congregants and leadership are trying to do things that are good and true.

Although I've been saved for almost 20 years, I did not truly start growing in my spiritual walk and deepening my personal relationship until I discovered Vision through a homeschool friend's invitation. I also did not realize what true fellowship, faith accountability and co-laboring for the kingdom models were until I stepped out to serve about 6 months after attending. Pastor Garid and his wife, Ruth, are very prayerful and intentional with everything they teach and offer here at Vision. Besides teaching the Calvary way as he learned under his own pastor, Chuck Smith, which is verse by verse, chapter by chapter, book by book of the Bible (the whole counsel of God), they are so relatable and know their flock. It always amazes me how many names he remembers and so quickly for a sizable congregation! He sprinkles in personal anecdotes that are funny, yet tie in with the messages. He also guest speaks across the country so other congregations can be blessed by the power of the Holy Spirit working through him. My husband also serves in teardown (the downside of being a "church in a box" every Sunday), and my two sons have gone through 3 kids' ministry levels so far! They have a family room that streams the service in, a nursery so you can take a break and have a trusted volunteer take care of your baby, 4 year old up to high school level groupings where the Word is taught in an age-appropriate way! I've also been able to co-labor with the most gifted, highest caliber of volunteers ever! I've been on the events team in decor, women's ministry, Bible study participant, kids ministry as craft and Bible teacher, VBS team, and then, as with most others, jumping in wherever needed. They also have a second campus for ministry events during the week while they begin to transition away from Orchard Hills on Sundays. But that won't completely transition until probably Easter 2024. Please visit and fill up your spiritual well! The hospitality and greeting team will make you feel instantly welcome!

3 main reasons that I love this church:…read more 1.) The sermons are always backed up by the Scripture. This means that the speakers don't shove their own ideas down your throat, but you can be reassured that the sermons are supported by what they should be supported with: The Bible. In addition to that, after each sermon, we are challenged to reflect and act upon what we've learned by giving us action items to choose from on a little survey sheet -- whether you choose to disclose that to only yourself or exclusively to the church leaders is tots up to you. This is a big bonus, because honestly, what does it mean being "a Christian" if we don't live a Christian life out? 2.) I love the people here! It's a very welcoming environment, and people do care a lot about each other. 3.) I'm speaking as someone from the English congregation (there's also a Chinese congregation for those that prefer to use Mandarin). The English pastor and youth minister are legit! It's such a beautiful sound that touches your soul and grabs your heart. Even if you're a non believer, one would appreciate the beauty. Location is very convenient (off 5 fwy)! So happy there's this beautiful masjid here in Irvine. I was a bit weary of the parking, especially coming for Tarawih prayer. I got in a lil after 8 & there was still lots of parking! I ended up parking in the New Horizons School parking lot. The street parking was full. I am not sure how full the actual parking was in the lot of the masjid. By the entrance there were workers directing people in where to park. The atmosphere is just lovely. The interior feels very very clean & I loved how the sisters area is a mezzanine, & not just a separate room completely blocked off (if you have been to other masjids you know what I'm talking about lol). It was a bit hot in there, which is probably my only complaint. The speakers here were so good & the sound was on point. The way it echoes throughout the masjid is just heartwarming! I love going here so far, the recitation is just amazing. Can't wait to come back again!
