It's a quaint church originally built in 1873. Having personally been raised Methodist we decided upon this church. We went through months of planning. Our initial encounter with the Pastor turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. We were greeted with a sigh by the Pastor as he was working out in the church yard. "Oh, that was today?" Sheesh! There was very little coordination, but for the grace of God and family, the wedding went without a hitch. All in all it went well. Originally we had chatted with their wedding coordinator that apparently got lost in the wind. We just wished that the Pastor had been more hands on. Perhaps it was because we we mainly communicating via email. We were worried if he was going to be on time. As we pulled into the parking lot we saw him taking off his t-shirt to get ready for the ceremony. We're happily married and have great memories of friends and family that saved this fiasco from ruin lol. We did find out after the ceremony that the tables our friends/relatives had prepared had been removed for some other church activity and had to be reset. If you like 'fly by the seat of your pants" ceremonies, this was the perfect venue ;)

They are very well known for an annual Art Show - The Celebration of Creativity - the first weekend in March each year. Many members have had experience in more traditional Christian churches and found the beliefs of those churches too restrictive. Southminster describes themselves as Companions on Your Spiritual Journey, and members and visitors are encouraged to explore their own beliefs and question. There is an active music program and the congregation values high quality music. Families with children can participate in Sunday school and and active Youth Group. Just one of several community outreach programs sponsored by Because People Matter (https://bpmpdx.org/), Night Strike is a humanitarian effort to provide a platform and safe gathering place under the Burnside Bridge every Thursday night, to engage with Portland's population of under-served, houseless individuals. Liberation Street Church holds services on Sunday mornings, and Monday and Wednesday nights, in the heart of the most embattled part of our troubled city. Its rugged, battle-worn exterior is less than welcoming upon first glance, bearing the tell-tale scars of years of abuse, vandalism and administrative neglect. Yet by lending its space, resources, and even some of the members of their congregation to an organization seeking to affect change and create community in a place where even the bravest fear to tread, the church's positive impact on our community is far greater than its relatively lean parish could ever hope to accomplish alone. It is a cornerstone of the seemingly-endless battle to reclaim downtown from the darkness; its crumbling, near-derelict walls a pillar of stone bearing the weight of a world that would otherwise come crashing down. Without the support of this faithful and generous community (and others like it), downtown Portland would have long ago succumbed to even greater ruin and desolation. When critics vociferously lament what Portland has become, and the miserable failure of the City Council that enabled its downward trajectory, asking "why isn't anyone doing anything about it?", rest assured, the good souls at Liberation Street Church, Night Strike, and Because People Matter are, and always have been, on the front lines. They were here when everyone else turned their backs: the vanguard that met the challenges head-on, and pays a high price to buy enough time for reinforcements to come. Sadly, those reinforcements are still missing in action...and yet, they're still fighting to make Portland a better place. If the meek will truly inherit the earth someday, it is because they gathered *here* to create connection, establish relationships, and stand united against the tides of crime, violence, addiction, fear, hate, and worst of all, apathy to the collapse of the human condition.

First Love meets at Springwater Church of the Nazarene off of 26 towards Sandy on Saturday nights…read morearound 6pm. It was an interesting atmosphere of greeting, music, art, and interaction. It was kinda like nothing that I have been to before in the relm of "church." Tom the lead pastor and his wife Peggy were very welcoming. There was nothing fancy, just coffee tea and some chairs. Tom shared a video message from Bethel's Bill Johnson and then expanded on it. I felt welcomed and included, very cool. Mostly 40/50 somethings, but there were also was a handful over under 30s. Will definitely go again next Saturday night.
