I called intertown realty on 6/12/26 to express my interest regarding a 1 bedroom apartment that was $1005 a month on the 3rd floor. At 636 Prospect avenue on the West Hartford line. I went to the appointment on 6/15/26 both rental agents showed the apartment to me. After I viewed two units one of the agents informed me that there was a renovated unit which was $1150 and I viewed that one also. Even though initially I was there to only view the unit for $1005. I was then interested in just completing an application for the unit for $1150. I received an emailed to start the application and the price was $1235 I called the rental office and told the agent the price was different. And then they changed it to $1150. I paid the $50 application fee online. When I get there on 6/17/26 with the security deposit One of the agents come out holding my statement looking at it and tells me I have to make 3x the rent. I asked if I could just look at the unit again for $1005 the only reason I asked was so I could make a decision and feel it out a little more. One of the agents took me to look at it again when we returned to the rental office. out of view I could hear him whispering to the other agent which was totally rude and unprofessional obviously it was about me. I was considering the unit for $1005 once I talked to my current landlord about a notice time. But after that I just walked out of that rental office. I wasted my day coming from Manchester by bus When one of the agents could've simply called to tell me I didn't qualify for the unit for $1150 and I could've avoided purchasing a money order for the deposit. even though they offered me the unit and move in date for the unit for $1005 I requested a refund for the $50 application fee. If I could give zero stars, I would. I want to share my full experience so others know what they may be walking into. After COVID, this management company began requiring a $50 application fee and a hard credit check often not disclosed until late in the process. Even applicants with excellent credit, solid rental history, and positive landlord references are treated unfairly if they lack a full year of employment. Some are told they must pay double security deposits or find co-signers, even for modest rentals in Connecticut. Unfortunately, the property I rented was infested with roaches and poorly maintained. Management, especially Daniel and Beckie, showed little empathy or accountability. Instead of addressing the pest issue, they insinuated that tenants brought the problem, despite clear evidence that it existed before move-in. It felt like they were more focused on profit than people. When I attempted to take legal action against the company, Beckie had my car towed on the day of court, claiming it didn't have a parking sticker even though many other cars without stickers were left untouched. It was clearly a form of retaliation and intimidation. Out of good faith, I decided to drop the case after being promised a full deposit refund if we found another place. However, those promises quickly disappeared. My family and I struggled to find new housing due to their poor reference practices, but once we finally secured a place, we gave proper notice--even confirming dates with Steve, who later contradicted himself and claimed we'd be violating the lease. After moving out (on September 30, 2025, exactly a year after moving in), they attempted to charge us $500 for junk removal for items we agreed to remove ourselves, snuck pictures of us moving out too. We removed everything, yet Beckie falsely claimed that an old mattress was ours and tried to charge $225 for that. Despite repeated follow-ups, she never responded. In the end, they withheld $200 from our deposit, citing "parking tickets and court fees," even though no valid documentation was provided. We left the home in better condition than we found it, even replacing blinds and cleaning thoroughly. Still, this company found ways to keep our money and manipulate the situation. read more

Tried to squeeze every last dime out of our security deposit for themselves even after extensive measures were taken to leave my apartment in the greatest condition possible given the state of the building. Ridiculous charges were applied to our security deposit such as over $150 to replace a singular bent blind and over $400 dollars to "fix holes" that we already had taken care of after the management said we were allowed to hang decorations and mount tvs. Would not recommend moving into this company's properties. Security is nonexistent, your packages will get stolen, your security deposit will get taken, and for the price of the apartments you could find better somewhere else. read more

This company sucks. I applied for an apartment and my application got approved. However, when it was time for me to pick up the key, no one is in the office. I called them before I left to collect the key, as they requested. No one answered the phone. After that, I am not sure I want to rent from this company. I withdrew my application but I was told I could not get my deposit back. I am pissed. I have not even signed the lease but the deposit is gone. But I guess that is their business model. But I am also glad that I didn't rent from them. At least I dodged a bullet even with a loss. read more

I have been living at an Intertown Realty property in Hartford for over 15 years. The location is great and the apartment is huge for a 1 bedroom. The bedroom easily fits a king size bed, book cases, a chair and desk. The living/dinning area is L shaped so there is room for a table and chairs outside the kitchen that's away from the living room. A couple years ago, the apartment windows were replaced with brand new, thermal/energy efficient windows. Whenever I have had a maintenance issue (such as a leak) the problem was quickly resolved by the professional maintenance crew. The apartment is very reasonably priced and includes parking, heat and hot water. I would recommend Intertown Realty for your next apartment. read more

Don't waste your time, this is a horrible place to live. Carpets in the hallway stink of dog piss and cigarettes, and the walls are so thin that you can hear your neighbor sneeze, cough, and answer their phone. Not to mention that there are zero amenities/perks while living here. There are only two washers and dryers for the entire building, and they NEVER work, so you end up going to a laundry mat anyway. Your packages are constantly stolen due to the terrible mail system in place, which is just your package being left outside by the front door. Hopefully the mail person is kind enough to put it inside the door, but then someone in the building will steal it. I have had two vehicles stolen off the property and damaged in the parking lot with zero answers from Leasing and the Property Mangers, because they refuse to install a simple security camera with a view of the parking lot. There are mice, severe plumbing issues, leaking toilets from upstairs neighbors, security issues, theft, vandalism, stench, crappy appliances that stop working in the middle of the night, and the list goes on. Leasing and the property managers/owners are well aware of ALL of these issues and refuse to do anything about it, besides raise your rent each year. RUN away from this place. read more

I live in Collinsville in one of the Intertown realty buildings. Lately I have smelled a dank moist rotting odor mold smelling in my apartment. I went down into the basement and it reeks of mold I could not even stay in there. This mold is leaking into my apartment above directly. I contacted Becki two days later she came out with one tiny dehumidifier and an industrial fan which their workers put in the fan in the basement and closed the doors. This exacerbated the problem and pumped all of that toxic basement air directly into my apartment. On top of that they dumped bleach all over the basement so I came in from dinner and I couldn't even breathe. My eyes were burning from the bleach and I immediately started feeling ill. My chest hurts I am running at the nose in my sinuses. I had to vacate the premises immediately. I sent Becki an email and she never responded. I am taking this up with my attorneys and the Board of Health of Connecticut immediately. They will not hire a mold specialist so I am hiring one myself. They will make up all sorts of bunk charges just so they can keep your entire security deposit, maybe they offer it as an incentive for the people who work there. I am a neighbor to several of their properties. And they are NOT a good neighbor. They leave their dumpster on their sidewalk nearly all week long (trash only gets picked up one day of the week.) Their sidewalks are icy. When you call to ask them to remove ice or the dumpster, they do not. Of all the properties on my street, Intertown Realty's look the worst and are the worst neighbors. The dumpster situation is unacceptable. I have not rented with this company, and I absolutely will not. I did view several of their apartments with a friend. They kept my security deposit for said damages even though I left the place in practically the same condition I moved in. I had a plumbing issue which caused my bathroom to flood several times a day and asked THREE TIMES for them to fix it, it wasn't until after I threatened to stop paying rent that they finally did something about it...absolutely disgusting. They don't actually fix anything, just charge you for it, let someone else move in, and charge them for the same things. There is also less parking than there are apartments, so you'll likely end up parked on the streets getting sideswiped and parking tickets. We moved to the Avon location and the property is exactly what we asked for.They maintain the property and are always here to fix anything that goes wrong. Beckie has been excellent to work with if I ever need to get in touch with her. They've been excellent with abiding to covid standards, aka wearing masks when entering buildings, and were even flexible with the rent when I was temporarily let go from my job back in March 2020. I've been living in intertownrealty apartments for about 5 years. I don't think the property management is the issue. I just think it's the location. I have NEVER had a problem with maintenance work. If I call they will set an appointment for someone to come. They call 15 mins before your appointment. The landlords are very laid back. Especially with covid. They understood people were being laid off and tried to work with people. They will follow the rules and go through the procedures. If you were just lazy and not paying anything. But they don't want to kick you out. As long as you do your part they will help where they can. read more

There is one lady on their management team (Beckie) who has the worst people skills, no compassion and not friendly. They do not fix things in a timely manner, I had my celling fall in due to the snow and they put boards up to cover the whole. I have several emails proving this guy would say that even if you pay your rent two days after the grace period (even if it's the first time you paid it late) that you have to pay him $100 in cash (which the signs in the office say "no cash payments allowed") so that way he won't send the marshall out to you. Anyone who knows anything knows you pay the $100 after the marshall has served you the paperwork. You do not pay $100 to prevent the marshall from coming. And it doesn't happen when you are just two days late either. He no longer works there.... I wonder why?? Don't rent from this company. They don't even deserve the one star. We moved into a tiny apartment with them simply because they allow pets (specifically all breeds of dogs, which is a requirement for me). Other than that, these people are crooks. we left a double security deposit and when we moved out (always paid rent on time) we left the apartment NICER than when we moved in. They took our ENTIRE double security and then said we owed an EXTRA 900 bucks. For leaving a curtain rod up, and not cleaning the inside of an oven. OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THIS? plus they took stupid pictures of their SHITTY CHEAP QUALITY floors and said we damaged it (meanwhile we did NOT receive new carpets or paint at the time of move in, which they say we did). Their workers are idiots who screwed up the entire apartment and they blamed us. Not to mention, we ended up moving into a diff apartment than they SHOWED US and we thought we were signing the lease for (they are sneaky bastards). we took them to court and we won hands down.... upon us winning the lawsuit they filed for EVERY appeal possible.... and lost all of those as well. we are yet to get a check. and this was ordered by the Hartford court! please do Hartford a favor, don't rent from them, and put the thieves out of business. read more

I currently rent from this company. Please, if anyone is reading these reviews because they are looking to rent from this management company, DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. The company's owners also own similar management companies in the area, please do your homework and double check to make sure they are not owned by the same people. The last name is Reiner. There are numerous law firms who are trying to shut this company down!!! They have even been sued by Richard Blumenthal!! They are HORRIBLE people truly scummy and underhanded. Just look up the truly astounding amount of cases filed in small claims against them. They have the resources to go to court and drag out the proceedings long enough that their tenants just give up (this was told to us by a lawyer who has sued them before!). Just to name a few things: Our apartment looks nice, but is a huge fire hazard. We discovered our plugs are fake and not even connected to the wall, just connected by EXTENSION CORDS plugged into another outlet and run along the molding to look like real plugs. The HEALTH DEPARTMENT had to file a suit against these people after they continuously refused to fix a huge huge leak in the radiator above our apartment that had created at least six feet of water damage, and they said this is not the first case they have had to file against this company. The laundry (which we pay for in our lease) never ever works, and at this point the company fixing the laundry machines has written a note saying that their machines work fine, the problem is with the electrical connection in the building. But the absolute cherry on top of the sundae? We recently learned (from a fellow tenant! The company has yet to reach out to ANYONE!) that there have been numerous break ins in our building and there has been a squatter living in our basement!! The police and health department are involved and the company has yet to take any action or return any of our calls. We asked when they would change the locks and they REFUSED. It appears they own half the West End and they advertise aggressively on CL so if you are pressed for time, you'll end up at a lot of their properties thinking their standards are the norm. Take photos of apartment the first day you move in and when you move out and of all the roaches and unfixed items. Cosigned an apartment lease on 01 July for 35 Evergreen for my daughter to attend University of Hartford. We asked permission to arrive on 30 June and paid one extra day's rent to do so. Moved belongings in and left apartment with all breakers off, and left notice with management that apartment would be empty until around 21 August. During our time away, we received two electric bills indicating excessive energy usage. We expected some for the July reading, but not anywhere near what the meter read (expected 10 kWh or less, showed 212 kWh). Notified management and they entered apartment to ensure power was indeed off and checked the meter for power usage. Nothing seemed wrong, and they offered to cover the excess charges. August reading showed the empty apartment used 802 kWh, when it should have read 0 kWh. Power company won't do anything until Intertown management ensures apartment was left as they last saw it. After waiting nearly a full business day for a response, the Intertown office person was trying to tell us it is impossible as all units are separately metered. I guess that means she thinks we are lying. It is sure luck on our part that we were not there, as it would be impossible to know such an error is occurring if my daughter was actually living there. This is not off to a good start, and we will break the lease if Intertown doesn't handle this matter immediately. Will update as we go. read more

She then proceeded to "pre-screen" me. As she was asking me questions about my job and how much money I make. I told her that I would be living with the apartment with my boyfriend of five years. If we deny your application we will refund your deposit. If we accept your application, and you change your mind, your security deposit will not be refunded. Please read the last sentence carefully!!! According to CT state law a security deposit is any advance rental payment other than an advance for the first month's rent or a deposit for a key or any special equipment. A security deposit remains the tenant's property but the landlord holds a security interest in it. Security deposits must be kept in an escrow account in a Connecticut bank. They seem to write their own laws. And will probably never deny an application. The REAL cost of an application is up to 2 months rent plus $50!!!! I've lived with Intertown Realty for almost a year and a half now and felt compelled to leave a review because I think they've improved a lot of things management wise, particularly in the past six months. The building/apartment is older but was clean at the time I moved in. I've had a handful of maintenance problems that have been addressed in a timely manner. A couple months back they launched an online maintenance request form which helped a great deal. The timeliness of snow removal and ice clean up this winter has been much more prompt than last. I find the ability to call and talk to someone in their management office hit or miss- I call during business hours and sometimes get a person and sometimes get the answering service. This is improved though (because previously I was always getting the answering service and never got a call back when I left a message) and now I find when I do get the answering service I get a call back from someone same day. Their pricing is reasonable and their pet policy is very generous which is why I'll continue to rent with them when my current lease ends. read more

I lived in an apt located at 114 Huckleberry Hill Rd in Avon CT. An apartment managed/owned by Intertown Realty. They allowed me to have my dog which was a big plus. I lived in LA for 10 years and moved to Avon. Compared to professional rental companies Intertown is definite a big fish in a small pond. Their buildings and apts are very old and dated. The building in Avon is horribly energy in-efficient. Intertown was prompt to respond to maintenance requests but they were terrible at actually fixing any problems. They replaced my HVAC system and though the system was brand new the system still failed to perform due to installation being done wrong. A result of the Mickey Mouse maintenance experience. Their maintenance staff are not professionals, though they are all very very nice people. It's a shame they don't know what they are doing. That said, Intertown is poorly run and managed. My heating bills regularly ran into the $500-700 range for a 900 sq ft apartment. It is all electric heat so beware! Intertown refuses to upgrade to natural gas as it doesn't make financial sense for them. Somewhat understandable. They maintain the grounds and building to the very minimum. The yard and common area of the building was always a mess. It's unfortunate that Intertown operates to the bare minimum of standards and basically meets the rental law requirements. Most rental companies go above and beyond. All told, if you do not like to be bothered by management then Intertown is for you. Hence the bare minimum of effort made in their rental properties. They are more interested in making as much money as possible while doing the least as possible for their tenants. I guess that is a good business model for them. read more

I recently finished my one-year lease in the Farmington Ave. apartment complex and my experience was fairly negative. Pros: - Fairly quiet, minus the occasional barking dog, crying baby, or loud music - Good location - Large rooms Cons: - I woke up in the middle of the night to my roof leaking (top floor unit). The maintenance team came two days later and gave it the short term fix, redoing the ceiling drywall. Less than a month later in the same exact spot, the roof began leaking again. When asking the maintenance person why it happened again so quickly, his response was "ownership doesn't want to spend the money to actually fix the issue, they're just going to keep making the cheap temporary fix" - When I moved in, the carpeting had a few splotches and stains. Nothing serious but certainly a visual detractor. When I got my security deposit back (2 months late), I found that they had charged me over $350 to have the carpet shampooed claiming I made the stains. Not only that, they charges me $150 to "clean the fridge" and insisted that was their cost to "hire a cleaning person and purchase materials". Shame on me for not realizing there were a few spots that could use a sponge pass-through, but $150!? I left my apartment the same way I moved in yet they took $500 off my security deposit. - Multiple break-ins reported during my year long tenancy (although I was fortunate to avoid this) - AC units look roughly 30 years old and have never been replaced. The drywall needed replacing around the units (which are built into the apartment, they are not window units). - The top floor suffers from extreme heat in the summer. Yes, you can blast your AC units all day but in the summer months it will never cool below room temperature with all of the rising heat and poor insulation. All in all, you can find a better location in West Hartford and certainly a better realty company. read more
