I am two for two with exceptional experiences at this Department of Transportation station. Scheduling an appointment was very easy, the system provided more than adequate reminders, and I was in and out in less time than it took me to get here. Once at my appointment, the wait was very short (began as scheduled, and maybe a minute or two early as I arrived ahead of schedule. The person who assisted me with my license renewal was friendly, professional, and addressed all of my questions politely. Really, I couldn't ask for a better experience. Horrible place. This guy with a grey goatee, bald, and with glasses tried questioning my wife and my marriage and said "Why doesn't she have your last name?" and said "Oh, she's planning to ....". He also asked "What's your relation to her?" and I said "husband" then he said "She says really???!" and my wife was irritated and said we've been married a long time already. It was a remarkable first visit, as this place is so darn efficient and staffed by a group of people with positive, collaborative energy. Get an appointment, fill everything out online before the day, and it will be the most straightforward assignment of your day. I appreciate that I could also quickly register for organ donorship and voter registration. Jen was my IowaDOT representative, and she was exceptional, a great representative who not only knew her job well but also projected a wonderful attitude. Ok, let me start by saying Daym! This was a bit crazy. I moved here to Iowa back in April of this year and just did not get my license. I put it off as long as I could. I had heard of horror stories about the massive wait times, and I can concur that the line at 2 pm was over 70 people deep with no way of making it through by 5pm. We decided to return at 8:00 am to get in the front of the line. We ended up 12th in line and out of over 100 people right at opening. Our service reps were very nice considering they deal with so many people daily. He was very mater of fact, and by the end of our transaction he was smiling and nice. I would like to give the 4 stars just due the fact that this is a over worked system. I was able to get my drivers licenses, with a motorcycle enforcement, plus my Veteran's status and Real ID for 8 years for 53 dollars. Closed for training ... closed most of the week for Thanksgiving. Maybe update the answering machine so it doesn't say you are open? Super frustrating to have to dive here to find out. Waited for an hour for the service and the old lady who served me had terrible attitude, showing me a terribly resentful and disrespectful face, speaking to me in a condescending tone. Curious as to why they don't have the front greeter any more. Need a face we can ask a quick question before we wait hours. I checked website and tried to avoid peak days/times but that didn't help. Photo of lobby on the website is deceiving because they put a lot more seats inside the room. I used to judge wait time by the line in the hall. They got rid of the greeter, photo desk, and a whole row of stations along the far wall. Now there are only 9 stations. But they put in a LOT of seats. But we are all waiting.... read more

He is a pompous ass who has an entitlement complex. Asked me stupid questions, to see if I was mentally capable while getting my drivers license. Nick sho of authority in this guy. Government efficiency at its finest, can you believe some people want the govt. in charge of more? Be prepared to wait three hours every time you go there, and that is just to get your ticket called. Insanely slow. Turned out that we needed our marriage license for my wife to get her driver's license, so we ended up just getting my ID... and it *still* took two hours, waiting in cramped, uncomfortable chairs. People who think the government should run health care, keep this in mind. read more

I've been here multiple times, first to get my Iowa drivers license from my previous out of state license, then for multiple address changes. The office is right off the interstate so it is convenient. Parking is very spacious, never had issues with finding a spot. There were times when I showed up and there were hardly any people and other times when it was packed, even when it was packed the wait was not terribly long. The employees here are all friendly and are knowledgeable in their field of business. read more

Parking was not a problem. Lots of seats available. But service was incredibly slow. As a point of reference, I've suffered lines at the San Diego DMV. And I still thought the wait time here was awful. It seems that they have an efficient system for getting people prepped for the initial info and reason for the visit, but the wait between then and seeing the next person at the counter becomes a treacherous game of watching the carpet grow (spoiler alert: it doesn't). As a previous yelper mentioned, there are many counters but few staff to occupy them. read more

DMV is the definition of slow service..uggggg! Workers have gone on break and the facility has been opened less than 2 hours. Only 4 stations open. Additional delays caused due to have no information booth to answer questions....people keep running up to windows out of turn to ask questions. Would love to know what SLA the DMV is to provide. read more

Super convenient and easy with ample parking and plenty of counters. Easy to transfer from one state license to another. Staff is friendly and nice. the waiting area has plenty of seating. Pictures are terrible as usual. But I would expect no less from the DMV. read more

The one polite person during my 2 hours here was the greeter. Thanks to him for being kind. The rest of the people were rude, condescending and horribly slow. I won't bore you with specifics. Just go and sit there and listen to how staff treat people. It is horrible. How they keep their jobs is beyond me. They should be ashamed of themselves for their behaviors. If I never set foot in here again it will be too soon. read more

About what you can expect from a driver's license office. The parking lot was close to full when I got there, but I was able to find a spot at the back. I went here to obtain my Iowa driver's license since I just moved here from out of state. Apparently this is the only option for obtaining a new license in Polk county. The system is pretty easy, get a number from the computer right when you walk in, and then wait to be called. Each station does all services. The numbers are called numerically. The room was pretty crowded so I waited in the hallway. As a reference, my number was exactly 100 away from being called when I checked in and my wait was 1 hour and 10 minutes. Once I was called, I was at the counter for about 10 minutes. I liked how once I got to the counter, I was able to do everything. You even get your picture taken right at the counter. So basically, just wait in one long line, but once you're called, you're good. read more
