So it's with mixed feelings that I post this review. The instant I set foot in the shop the people are very friendly and it's a nice shop. But I had a very negative experience here from then on. I had a tattoo done that got terribly infected. It was done June 22nd and it's still has scabs coming off of it. I started a sleeve for my birthday and this place was the first tattoo I got that started it. I have since gone elsewhere and gotten another tattoo that has already healed before the one I got here at iron mountain. In the first week of getting it. I went through hell. It got so reddish pink and swelled up to the point I thought I would have to go to the ER. For two days I couldn't move my arm above my head and it was oozing puss and looked awful. It was throbbing, having shooting pains and I was crying from being in so much pain. As it's healed the skin is all uneven and lumpy. People are asking me what happened and my comments on my tattoo which was supposed to be my birthday present and that I paid A LOT of money for in hopes of getting beauty have been "looks like a stick on tattoo, looks inexperienced, she really dig into you, wow that's rough, looks blotchy" During that week I was panicking and when I reached out to the artist I got really no sympathy at all but more so a tough break and probably your fault email back but thanks, I'll use this as a growing experience as an artist....Really? Well I'm glad that you can grow from this. But This in on ME for life not you. And I am the one that had to deal with the pain and I am the one that has to hear the comments not you. I am trying to put topicals on the skin to heal it cause it feels like I was mauled by an animal. My partner had even gotten a kit basically for burn victims with gauze and helped bandage me. It was humiliating going to work like that. But the worst was going through all of this and the defensive treatment like oh tough shit from the business itself. Luckily the artist I am working with now said he can fix it and told me he doesn't know why some artists feel the need to go so heavy. You can go lightly and still get a tattoo looking good, plus you don't have to use those giant fat coils. So this disastrous monstrosity will be fixed but I paid a lot to have it done, tipped a lot, all to have it basically be covered up and treated poorly, and have the "sucks to be you peace out" and there's the door treatment. Pretty uncool if you ask me. Never setting foot near this establishment again. Would have been nice to just be treated human rather than for them to go instantly defensive, probably wouldn't have felt the need to write this review but some people can't set ego aside and I really felt screwed over read more

This is absolutely the ONLY place in the super northern part of California to get a tattoo. Curt Baer and his entire crew are excellent artists. This place has international tattooists taking guest spots, and that says a lot for a shop in such a rural (ish) area. I personally have been tattooed by Curt twice, and his lines, detail, and saturation are on par with the best in the business. He's no nonsense, and when you sit down in his chair he tattoos you from start to finish, and asks a more than fair rate for the art you get. The environment is super chill, all of the artists are cool people, and the walls are plastered with beautiful art. There's an artist at this shop for anything you're looking for. Look at any of the artists portfolios, and you'll see that the other shops in town full of wannabe artists and scratchers with certificates aren't even competing. Don't waste your time with them, you'll just end up in Iron Mountain to get it covered anyway! Just because someone competed on a "reality" show, doesn't mean they have any real talent. I've gotten 3 tattoos here, pretty detailed with shading all by different artists. Tattoos were great and I'm happy with how they turned out but honestly the only thing that makes me hesitate about going back is how they aren't very friendly. I went to this tattoo shop to ask about a tattoo everyone in there was rude I stood there quietly waiting to be asked if I needed help after a while i asked how long a wait before someone could help me and a man said what do u want, I told him I was wanting a white snow flake tattoo, if anyone does dermal tops, and the price he rudely told me to leave my name and number and they would call me, no one ever called me I tried to call and they never answered thier phone the place looked clean but it was a big open room no privacy and your around a bunch of jerks so probably try every tattoo shop before this one read more

I came into the shop on a Monday, looking to get my feet tattooed. I was greeted by friendly staff and encouraged to look at the artist's portfolios. I ended up requesting Justin May, who had availability a few days later. He drew up an amazing piece the day of the appointment and was adamant in making sure both tattoos were symmetrical (which I greatly appreciated). After about 1.5 hours, we were done and the end result totally exceeded my expectations. The price was very reasonable. Went in for "Mini Skull Monday" just because it sounded fun and felt like something I had to do.... it was definitely fun and I don't regret it a bit! My mini skull was tattooed by Tony Vau and he was great. Calming and fun to talk to. It's been about a month and the tattoo has healed perfectly and looks great....bright, colorful and fun. Love the shop...like an art gallery and everyone there was really great. When I feel the need for another tattoo, I'd definitely go back! I am a 64 year old woman who has had tattoos "back in the day." I have an area on my leg that has some permanent bruising. My goal was to see if they could cover the area with a tattoo as I am very self conscious about it. First of all when I walked in there were no smiles or friendlyness from the three young men there. I even tried to make a joke about having old skin. Not a smile. They made me feel awful and old. The man that finally came to the counter said he would ask the other two men what they thought. He soon walked back and said the general consensus was they couldn't do it. They did not even look at the area. Talk about age discrimination. I am from Santa Cruz where tattoo artists are kind. You guys definitely fit the Redding model. I hope your Moms don't get disrespected like the disrespect you showed this old lady. I had a small tattoo here done a while ago. I was recommended here by a friend, and was able to walk in without an appointment. I had a guest artist that was there from Phoenix, AZ take my computer print out and put an artistic twist on it. He did a beautiful job, and the space was extremely clean and welcoming. Well I got script here. Looked good for a week or so. The none letter started to fade and if you spread our the letter you can see an empty spot where there should be ink. It also is crooked. Way to pricey for a messed up tat:( I will give them a star for being very clean. read more

TLDR; The artist doing my work over estimated their ability for my piece and in the end we could not finish. I left the business with an okay but unfinished tattoo and have no intention of returning to have my work finished here. Came in with good expectations, have had friends come from here with good results but I had a disaster of an experience here. Spent a good five hours getting worked on and ended with less than an hour's work left on the piece because I started rejecting the ink. I was never warned this could be an issue before it started happening. I should have seen the red flags as the artist said vague, slightly condescending comments about my work being done like nobody gets this much work done in one sitting. But I was under the assumption they wouldn't do work they didn't think should be done, as any professional should. Aside from that the atmosphere was not very relaxing hardcore metal and punk was played the entire time, which is to taste. But the most annoying thing was an ongoing pissing contest between my artist and another artist about who's childhood was rougher growing up in Redding vs SoCal. I felt it was something that shoudl be duked out over a few beers at home and not at the work place. Nothing hostile was said but as a customer I felt exasperated, as I was stuck in the middle of listening to that for a bout a good hour during the time I was there. The biggest foul I only came to realizes was after we had ended the session and I left the studio. I was never given any aftercare advice and had to seek out information on my own. All and all, my tattoo itself is not terrible but I feel I should have sought out a more professional and considerate artist who would have been honest and stopped our session at a reasonable point and offered a second appointment at a point before I had a physical reaction to the process. read more

I've gotten compliments on the quality of my artwork by Curt and Jacqui everywhere I travel! The shop is clean and they make you feel welcome whether you're a regular or first time customer. I won't go anywhere else and I recommend them to everyone I know! While I haven't been tattooed personally by the other artists, I've seen the quality of their work and it meets the high standards Iron Mountain is known for. I had a cover up done by Luke after hearing great things about the shop but it didn't turn out too well. For one thing the cover up looks like a cover up. People always ask me what I covered up with the new tattoo. Not a good thing. The second problem is he was pretty heavy handed, and ink blew through leaving a greenish outline around the tattoo. So now I am finding instead of wearing dresses during the hot summers of Redding I am wearing pants to cover the bad artwork. 2 stars for cleanliness and the ability to get me scheduled within a week and because the staff was insanely nice. Justin May is outstanding. Had a specific tattoo in mind, made an appointment for 2 days later, emailed photos, and when I arrived it was beautifully drawn up. It was quick, and the result was wonderful and exceeded my imagination. The atmosphere and people working here are awesome too, had a few laughs during the process.
