Wow where do I even begin. I still suffer ptsd from working here. This place is run like a corrupt…read moremilitary school. Way too many people "in charge" telling you conflicting directions. I was bullied terribly by staff because I was white. They expected teachers to snap at children and get in their face and yell. Pretty much against everything I stand for as an educator. They would hire random waitresses off the street with no education degrees to teach the kids. These "teachers" had no idea what to do and were always in power struggles with the kids or putting their hands on them inappropriately. (Grabbing them by the arm, pushing, I even saw one drag a boy by the arm down two flights of stairs) I blame the school for hiring inexperienced and unqualified staff. I now know why they do this. Someone like myself with a degree knows what's not acceptable teaching practice and they don't want to hear it. They do not care what staff have to say they only care that they do what they tell them to. They expect teachers to be there from 6am to 6pm some days even later. It's disgusting what they demand from teachers. If anyone voices concern they suddenly disappear aka get fired. Just because these kids live in Newark doesn't mean they deserve corporal punishment and being treated like dogs! Between suffering from reversed racism from staff to being told I have to treat kids like they aren't human beings, to complete burn out- I have been placed into therapy to try to recover from this! I get physically ill thinking about how these schools act like martyrs teaching low income cities but if people knew what really went on behind closed doors they would be sick! Thank god they got a new building because the old one was covered in cockroaches, mice, and rats. Poor, unhealthy, unsafe conditions. At first I was shocked there weren't law suites or attention drawn to these schools but then I realized it's because they hide/cover up what really goes on behind closed doors. I've never been part of a school that didn't treat children or adults like actual human beings. I feel sad for those kids and the few good teachers there. In addition, kids with behaviors roam the halls freely not attending class bullying innocent children, students with special needs do not have their modifications from their ieps met/followed, and children are being left alone in compromising situations with adults. I've seen teachers ridicule students in front of the entire class, even yelling at them for not understanding things. Hopefully during the pandemic this school went remote so the kids and good stuff are safe.

i am giving a 4 star review for newark public schools cause i was a substitute teacher for one…read moreschool year in 2005 during my finding my purpose in life phase and i loved the kids and faculty but the folks running the school not so much. the kids did not come from privilege backgrounds but they had a thirst for learning and it was a great challenge for the other teachers and i but it took a draining toll on me and my teaching phase went out of business after one school year. its not easy being a sub as i was not able to really teach world history but rather be a baby sitter for 7th graders. . i did have some benefical moments as the teacher i was subbing for was out for a month for personal reasons and i was able to have control of the class teaching about world war 1 and 2 to a room full of 35 students who for the most part were listening and learning. when i look back ,teaching in newark nj was not easy and i dont regret the experience and i tip my hat to all the teachers who do.
