However, the teachers are great, the athletic program is great and the academics are taken seriously! I felt compelled to write a review for Queens Metro because I know it's a relatively new school and…read moresome parents and kids don't know much about it. First of all, because some people get MELS and Queens Metropolitan mixed up, I want to clarify that they are two completely separate schools. They have nothing to do with one another. There are actually 3 schools on the same campus: a District 75 school (special education), MELS -Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School (middle school and high school), and Queens Metropolitan High School. They are three separate, independent schools. I didn't know how good Queens Metro was until my child started going there. He's an excellent student, he was in an honors class at Russell Sage and he had a GPA of 97.5 and high state tests scores. Yet, he didn't want to take the SHSAT. We didn't push for it (well...not too much) because we knew that Metro was a good neighborhood school and we were ready to transfer him if things didn't work out. As it turns out, we are gladly surprised that it is better than we expected. We're so happy we made the decision for him to go to Metro; the more we learn about it, the more we like it. Not only the environment is very welcoming and containing for the students and families, but the teachers are top notch! They are highly educated, young, energetic, engaged, good communicators, with high expectations and a passion for teaching. The principal, Ms. Rodriguez Tabone, is pretty new in the school. She is coming straight from Stuyvesant High School, where she used to be the Assistant Principal! This is her second year at Metro and she's making the school better and better. She's an amazing leader, committed to strong academics, making the best of every student and taking the school to the next level. She's bright, approachable and efficient. The school is getting grants and is transforming a trip to Costa Rica (which students can take at any point during the 4 years) into a community service trip. They have several clubs and varsity sports. They have AP and College Now courses. Now, there are kids at Metro who got into Bronx Science and Townsend Harris and chose to come to Queens Metro, and recently kids who were in other Specialized high schools for their freshman year who ended up transferring to Queens Metro because they didn't want to put up with the commute, having a great school in their area. That's how good it is. A lot of kids in the area end up going to the Specialized High Schools. Metro is a great alternative to that. I hear horror stories of kids from other neighborhoods who are excellent students but were not matched to a good school. We are so, sooo lucky to have Metro in our neighborhood

We were invited to attend a funeral service on this church today. The location is easy to find…read more There is a small parking for attendees. The good thing is next to a commercial center that owners may not mind using few of the available spots. Spanish community comprised the neighborhood and was not surprised that the mass proper was in Spanish language. The church ambiance is so beautiful, old fashioned architecture, old standard church size with beautiful decor. The music that could be played by the player from an organ sounds beautifully... it flows on the air especially coming from the balcony. The attending priest was so humble and at point with his lecture. Short but meaningful service.

John Adams in the 80s and beyond was a great school then it started to change in the mid 90s till…read morenow. at one point until a couple of years ago it was so bad that there were always about five squad cars in front of the school at any given time. The school has changed and the laws are becoming more strict on dress code and behavior. The faculty is good they get better students each year who care about their education and their future attending the school and because of that it's making the school better all around. John Adams public school has so much to offer children and so much opportunity to offer children that if you live in the neighborhood and you're serious about a great education for free I recommend John Adams YABC Program as well. You can go to school at night and still get a diploma. John Adams is slowly getting rid of all the bad apples that attended that school and they're filling it up with children who want to learn and get a great education. I think the faculty really cares about its students and they want to see the children get ahead. The school is Enormous. the graduation rate is not where it should be but I think within 10 years this is going to be another fantastic school once again.

MELS reminds me of a Montisory school. All Hands on at…read moreschool. Almost never homework. MELS is Environmental friendly and not a typical HS with homework. It's only 6 years old and 600 students grades 6th to 12. They have an Excellent IEP program of several levels. They have a 100% Graduation Rate!!! And like over 85% that go on the College. The school is so clean and the Property is well maintained. The bullying is rare as well. The 2 principles are midwestern guys. If you lucky enough to get accepted to this Fine school you are Very lucky indeed. Last year for example over 2000 children applied to the freshman year with only 22 available seats open. There is a uniform of beige khaki pants for boys and girls a green polo top or a blue T-shirt or white T-shirt.
