It was suggested to stop and try their Maple Rum so how could I pass that opportunity up! Easy walk from the waterfront and easy to find. The gentleman behind the counter was knowledgeable and helpful and allowed me to try it before making a purchase. I bought a bottle to take with me back to the states. The building is so cool, a marine blacksmith shop, operating for over 110 years (from 1893 to 2004) and now a distillery. Absolutely delicious! We previously left a great review for this place before we moved here. I'd still say the experience and location itself merits 5 stars, but we are now giving their vodka and gin 1 star along with their level of service. While it's a cool place and fun to visit, we will no longer buy their alcohol. We purchased a bottle of gin and a bottle of vodka and kept it stored in the freezer for those scorching hot Valley days. Upon taking the bottles out of the freezer a few weeks later to make some cocktails for the deck weather, the bottles looked like they were only 1/2 full and turned completely into sludge. Almost the consistency of hair gel. What's worse, we messaged them to let them know (in the end of August) and no one even bothered to respond to us. We have bought Ironworks many times before that and this will be the last time. To spend $100 on booze and have it go to waste is just hard to swallow. It truly makes me wonder what's in the liquor if it can't be frozen like any other alcohol. read more

Highly recommend grabbing a bottle or two of locally made & sourced fruit liquors as a souvenir ! For $27 each (tax included), we bought a 375mL bottle of Blueberry Liqueur and Rhubarb Esprit. The staff were very nice about giving testers and after trying most their fruit liqueurs, these were our favourite. FUN FACT: the national fruit of Nova Scotia is their local blueberries! And the Haskap berry liqueur is quite popular because a lot of people haven't heard of this locally grown berry, which tastes more tart. They also sell Trio sets of 50ml bottles for $26, but these aren't as economical as buying one flavour's 375ml bottle. read more

A very pleasant surprise to find in Lunenburg! The staff was exceptionally helpful and not at all pushy, even after we sampled (at least) half of the beverages they bottle. The maple rum is a standout. They apparently started out making fruit liqueurs only, and they were also very good. We were happy to walk away with an assortment of the fruit liqueurs (cranberry, raspberry, rhubarb, and blueberry). One minor note, since they can't all be winners: Ironworks' whiskies aren't nearly as good as their gins, rums, and liqueurs, so calibrate your expectations accordingly. read more

Such a cool little distillery in Lunenburg! The atmosphere is awesome and so are their spirits. We didn't get to go on a tour and unfortunately they didn't have much of a seating area to sit back and enjoy a tasting. Ironworks is a gorgeous distillery in Lunenburg that puts out a whole range of delicious spirits in some of the most lovely designed bottles I've seen in a long time! I first picked up a bottle of their Cranberry liqueur at Bishop's Cellar on an impulse and I've never looked back. Don't believe me? Visit them at the market and try a sample for yourself. Their products are a little on the pricy side (for me, anyway) but they're definitely worth it. It just means I get a little possessive over them at the house. They aren't part of my, 'sure - help yourself to whatever you can find' offer, that's for sure. But then again, that may not be the price so much as my own greed. The Cranberry is still my absolute favourite but Blueberry fans will like that option too. I don't have much of a distinguished palate when it comes to spirits so I won't comment any further on their more traditional lines, but I will say they're potent! Oddly enough, despite having seen the Ironworks stand many a time at the farmer's market in Halifax, it took a random trip to their home base of Lunenburg before I finally sampled and purchased their wares. With time to kill while my girlfriend did architecture school research, I remembered that Ironworks was here and made my way there. Located just a block up from the waterfront on one of the few main drags in Lunenburg, Ironworks is housed in a charming looking old time warehouse. After an embarrassing incident of trying to open doors that were closed for the season, I made my way inside to see a lovely space with more seafaring decor and lovely displays of their various liqueurs and hard alcohol. Being that it was deep into the off season for tourists, there were only a couple other people and soon it was just me and the lady working at the counter. I was able to sample a few of their rums and easily decided on their amber rum. It's their regular white rum aged some more in old bourbon barrels, so it takes on that reddish - amber even - colour of bourbon and some of its flavours as well to give it a very unique flavour for a rum. I'm not a big rum fan, especially of the big name white rums which are fairly repulsive and too sweet, so a small batch rum that tastes like whiskey is right up my alley. For such a good rum, nice bottle and good service from a local business, it's easy to justify the $38 for the quart. I also picked up a tall Ironworks shot glass, although I can't imagine shooting something this good, so it's really just a nice, tall high ball glass. It's got a solid inch of glass at the bottom too, so you don't have to worry about it being top heavy. I also got to peek in at the still which had a batch of their pear liqueur boiling away. Yay booze! Apparently it takes a lot of fruit to make a batch of the fruit liqueurs, which would explain their hefty cost relative to the rums or vodkas. If you're in town, you definitely have to pop into Ironworks, sample some top shelf hooch and take home some souvenirs for you liquor cabinet. read more

This is a flourishing business in Old Lunenburg and shows how the perfect match of business model, location and concept can really add to a town's appeal. A few years ago Ironworks was launched in the old Thomas Walter's and Sons building -- the marine blacksmith shop near Lunenburg's historic shipyard. They renovated the building, keeping all the period charm, and instilled, well, a still -- a shiny steampunky contraption of copper and brass. They produce a line of simply superb liqueurs, rum and vodka, beautifully packaged, sensibly priced and of first quality. The staff are friendly and helpful, and you can sample anything before you buy, which is a great pleasure in itself. I often buy presents from friends from away here, and it's very popular with visitors looking for a classy and consumable souvenir of their travels. Situated in a beautiful restored building overlooking the sea on the edge of town, it's a lovely but small place to try some locally made spirits. They offer thimble-sized tastes, but these tiny shots of rum, vodka, gin and other liquors pack a potent punch and a little goes a long way. The fruit liquors are made from locally sourced, in season fruit (and when it's gone, it's gone - they sold the last bottle of their strawberry right before we arrived) and were unique and delicious. We ended up with large bottles of rhubarb, cranberry and blueberry - I'm so excited to use them in cocktails! I liked their gin, too - very different flavor profile and heavily herby. We didn't want to have to carry too many bottles home with us - but I sort of regret not getting a bottle. All in all a great little stop if you're in Ludenburg. It doesn't take long to sample and purchase / so it's not like going to a winery or brewery where you can make an event of it. All their offerings are on the pricier side - but they are beautifully bottled and such unique offerings that the value is there and worth a little splurge. read more

Friends and i stayed in a guest house across the street from Ironworks Distillery. I was intrigued. Distillery?! Ouuu! What do they make? I actually went in to see on the day of their anniversary. There were balloons outside and a friend had mentioned they were giving away free chocolate cake! That did it. It was really nice inside, rustic and woody like an old barn. There was a huge, beautiful shiny still in the back corner. Everywhere was old wooden barrels displaying their products. They had samples of all the different liqueurs. I tried the saskatoon berry liqueur. Yum! There was also cranberry and blueberry. They even make vodka from apples!! You should go see this place if you are ever in Lunenburg. read more

What a beautiful spot, I've seen and purchased some of the Ironworks products at independent liquor stores in Halifax, so I was happy when I got to visit their distillery in Lunenburg. The building is gorgeous and reminds me of some of the winery rooms in Napa. The staff here are very friendly and are happy to answer any and all questions you may have about the products. They are also happy to let you sample any and all of the liquors. They are all delicious, and have a nice bite. This spot is definitely worth the stop on your next trip to Lunenburg. read more

Ironworks is one of my favourite stalls in all of Seaport. The colours of the liqueurs here are hypnotic. Pale pinks, deep reds, tinges of yellows and greens, I want them all! They have their award-winning vodka for sale here, and I keep meaning to buy a bottle and try it. I've heard nothing but good things about it, and vodka is my true love when it comes to alcohol. The problem is I'm easily distracted. Everything they carry is just so unique! I can't stop myself from trying something new when I'm here instead. Vodka can be found everywhere. These other flavours are something special. The rhubarb liqueur is one of the best things I've ever poured down my throat. This is for any and all fans of rhubarb. If you pine for it every time the season ends, do yourself a favour and pick up a bottle. Or at least go and have a sample cup poured for you at the market. It's amazing. They are a bit of a splurge, but they feel so fancy! Cranberry, Blueberry, Pear... there are just so many to admire. Vodka, I will have you yet! read more

We stopped by while in the area. Small place in an old building which used to be a blacksmith shop. A woman, who I assumed is a owner, stood behind a bar. Asked us what we normally drink and offered us a taste of that. You will not get a taste of everything they make. You will get about three at most. She told us after three tasting nothing has a taste. She said she wanted us to pick up on the various taste in each. We go to many distilleries so this was an odd set up to us. Usually they want you to taste everything so you know what you like. They make their vodka out of apples. This seems to be their signature item. The place actually smelled like apples. She stated they had been working on them before we came in. They make a wide range of things (rum, vodka, gin, etc.) We were the only ones there so that was nice. We bought a bottle of the vodka, my father bought a sampler pack of some of their liqueurs. A nice walk from the main harbor. Parking is also near by if you drive. Our overall trip was quick and to the point. I did appreciate the clean washroom. If in the area stop by but not worth a special trip for Iron Works. read more

I'm generally not a fan of hard liquor, but Ironworks turns the traditional drinks on their heads. And makes them do handstands. The distillery is small with a "rustic" wooden floor and lots of barrels. They feature glasses from Nova Scotian Crystal, and that's about it. It's all about the booze. Their apple brandy and amber rum take your breath away (almost literally). The taste is ... wow. They also have some lovely sweet liqueurs and something called "Rhubarb Esprit," which is basically a sweet liqueur with a lower alcohol percentage. This is the one we bought; we found this one to be the most flavourful. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the prices are reasonable. Ironworks is at the Seaport Market so next time we are there we can pick up a bottle. read more

Oh this place is just awesome. If you're ever in Lunenburg sign for the guided tour. It costs $10 but you get a shot glass and get to taste all their drinks. About drinks, I can see how they won their awards. Never heard of Apple vodka before but it was so smooth and tasting good. I liked their gin, and I hate gin in general!!! The berry liqueurs were quite unique. You can probably combine them in so many ways in cocktails. The best things they offer IMO is their dark rum and the brandy. It's pricey, but a perfect gift for someone special! read more

I had first encountered this company at the Saltscapes Expo, but had not had the opportunity to try their product. I recently had the opportunity to stop into their storefront. We had our dog with us on this road trip, so my husband and I had taken turns going into the store to check out the inventory. The staff were friendly and helpful. They welcomed my dog into the entry to the store and got him a bowl of water (which gives them extra points in my book!). I purchased the blueberry and rhubarb. Very tasty and unique. This product is great for interesting cocktails and a great uniquely Atlantic Canadian gift. read more

Skip the mix and savor these fantastic products straight. I suspect lots of care and knowledge - and no small amount of perfectionism - went into making them. We visited Ironworks' Lunenburg store after reading an article in Progress magazine (linked below). The experience is a pleasure for the senses. SIGHT - a large, shiny copper still dominates the space, while the rustic charm and historical significance of the old blacksmith's shop has been maintained. Now contrast that image with the sleek, modern design of their bottles, a few uncluttered display shelves, and the elegant glassware they use for sampling. Very nicely done. SMELL - the store has the distinct aroma of a distillery (or a rowdy bar the morning after a big party). It's slightly unpleasant (it ain't exactly lavender), but the authenticity adds to the experience ... kinda like stepping into a rum runners hideaway. And as for TASTE - well, that's the very best part. We sampled molasses rum (it rivals the really good stuff), apple vodka (incredibly smooth with a wee hint of apple), and berry liqueurs - OH MY, the not-too-sweet cranberry liqueur is liquid heaven! We happily shelled out $50+ for two of our faves (rum and cranberry) and we were delighted to learn that Ironworks is also sold at the Saturday market in downtown Dartmouth (near the King's Wharf development), but we highly recommend you visit the Lunenburg facility. Your senses will thank you. Btw, the products are made with local ingredients and, in true Luneburg tradition, they're currently perfecting a Balsam Fir liqueur. Can't wait to give it a try. Had a great visit to Ironworks! Took the tour for $10, which is worth it to see the set up in the beautiful old building and to get a full tasting at the end. Our guide, Daniel, was great and had personal connections to the city so he could tell us a lot about the history of the iron shop that had been there before and the current set up. We walked out happy with the Bluenose rum and rhubarb liquor which both stood out to us! read more
