The Clerk of the Courts assesses filing fees based on the amount the Plaintiff is suing for. The…read moreClerk of the Courts does not include court filing fees, cost of summons, process service fees or attorney fees in determining the amount to be assessed. The cost for filing a suit under $500.00 is $80.00. The cost for filing a suit over $500.00 is $174.00. I filed a small claims case with the Leon County Clerk of the Courts. Paragraph 11 in the complaint states "Defendant owes Plaintiffs $407.60 ($707.60 less $300.00 security deposit not returned), plus $75.00 collection fees and $150.00 small claims court related costs." The paragraph further states "The costs are shown below as follows ..." and shows 8 lines of detail listing my claim and including 3 lines showing court related costs, which are not to be considered in calculating the cost of the filing fee. The total of our claim, upon which a filing fee would be assessed, was $482.60. After filing our case, the Leon County Clerk of the Court sent a letter assessing an additional $94.00 claiming the case was over $500.00, which it was not. I contacted the Leon County Clerk of Court on several occasions attempting to discuss the incorrect assessment. Basically, I was told this is how we see it, you owe the additional $94.00. I sent a letter to the Clerk requesting an explanation such as laws, rules of court, etc., as to how in their opinion I should have properly presented the amount that I was claiming in the complaint which I filed. Additionally, I included a number of suggestions that would help non-attorney individuals have easier access to the Leon County Clerk of Court and the court system based on my experience. Access for the non-attorney individual is a major component of the small claims process. Judges typically work with individuals differently than they would attorneys, as the small claims court is more of a "people's court" for individuals to present their claim. I received a very short response thanking me for the suggestions, but absolutely no mention of the $94.00 that the Leon County Clerk had demanded I pay. I think it is fair to say they have chosen not to discuss it because there probably aren't any laws, rules of court, or other legal areas that say how the claimed amount should be presented in a case. I paid the $94.00, under protest, rather than be sent to collections; however, the Leon County Clerk of the Court still has not reimbursed me $94.00 for their over assessment of the amount of the claim for calculating the filing fee. The case has been resolved; and it is a matter of court record that the case was settled for less than $500.00, thereby reinforcing my claim that this case was not over $500.00. In summary, I believe I was ripped off by the Leon County Clerk of Courts; thus, I am publishing this complaint in the hope that other individuals will be provided better consideration rather than having their complaint aired on the web or elsewhere.

After living in Florida off and on for about 40 years I finally came home to New York. I don't even care to go visit these days. I do miss my friends and relatives though. Florida does have great Parks, Sports and recreational activities of all kinds. The most beautiful golf courses in the United States as far as I'm concerned. My parents retired here well over thirty years ago and that's when I started visiting. I've lived here now for 8 years. For both business and pleasure, I've covered the state from Key West to Tallahassee. I've hit the beaches on both coasts, the panhandle, and many of the central cities and towns and of course many of Orlando's theme parks. Overall, I think I'm well qualified to comment on the state. It's a great place to live but it's critical to understand that the state is EXTREMELY diverse in almost every way! Much more so than many other states. As there of thousands of web sites to help research, here are 5 locations that will illustrate Florida's diversity. * Tampa/Saint Petersburg * Saint Augustine * Pensacola * Lake Placid * Key West They are all widely diverse and I could have picked dozens of other locations. Whenever folks talk about Florida there are always at least two elephants in the room- 1. Hurricanes 2. Heat & Humidity Hurricanes need to be respected, no question! This is especially true if you move to South Florida's coast. They are hurricane magnets! Things get much better if you live inland as everyone knows hurricanes begin to dissipate as soon as they hit land. I live in the dead center of the state and my condo is 34 years old. In all that time, after being inundated by many, mostly dissipating hurricanes, my condo has NEVER received any damage! This is one of the many reasons Disney built in Central Florida! Yes, it's hot and humid but let's remember that many winter months are flat out glorious. If you have the $, you can live on the coast and the ocean breezes will mitigate both. If you live inland, in the summer, it's a lifestyle change. Going outside at 3 or 4 in the afternoon can be a trial! Florida has countless attractions both manmade and natural. Thousands of folks relocate here every year and that should tell you something. When I look at every facet of my life, I'm delighted to live here and have no intention of leaving! Four stars!

This is a small but powerful memorial. At first glance, I thought that it was a 9/11 memorial. It…read morehonors the men and women that served in the Vietnam War and was dedicated in Nov 1985. The memorial consists of a 28 feet tall, 15 feet wide American flag that is suspended between twin tall granite towers. The towers have the names of Florida's Vietnam solders that were KIA or MIA, engraved in them. The memorial also includes a small marble pedestal designating the memorial, with an inscription that reads: "Florida's Vietnam Memorial in honor of the 386,000 Floridians who served during the Vietnam Conflict. 1964-1975 among whom 1,669 succumbed and 83 are missing in action. Their names are engraved on this memorial as a token of everlasting gratitude to these patriots for their supreme sacrifice". That marker is very weather and is very difficult to read as you can see in the pictures,You will find a few benches to sit on in the memorial's plaza and it is normal to see flowers placed on the memorial. In front of the memorial is a smaller metal memorial that represents the POW/MIA braclet. It has an accompanying granite pillar that has an engraving that explains the significance of the bracelet. Parking here is kind of tough. There is metered parking and commercial garages/lots within a reasonable walking distance. I like this memorial it is simple, but effective, while paying the proper respects to the city's Vietnam Veterans. Anyway, as with most memorials that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 10 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. The State House is right across the street and there of tons of memorials and parks to check out in the immediate area.

It was dedicated in 2001 and has a life like bronze statue of an elderly veteran man with a cane and small American flag in his hand. The sculpture is the work of local artist, W Stanley "Sandy" Proctor. The man in the sculpture appears to be in his military uniform and is sitting on a bench. The bench has the inscription "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his country". The backdrop of the memorial is three flag poles waving the Leon County flag, the American Flag, and the Florida State flag, respectively. There are a few benches around the Memorial's plaza to sit, relax, and reflect and if you look closely, you will see the names of WWII veterans on brick pavers that encircles the the memorial. If you plan on driving to see the memorial, there is metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance. South Florida is not the Same anymore…read more When I saw Marqus post this I was thinking....I love South Florida soooo much, but its changed in so many ways that makes me hate it at the same time, I hate the crooked politics, the shady deals concocted with these power hungry people. I hate the multi language pamphlets and the discrimination of being the only English speaking person when I walk into store in Margate FL USA to order a raw palomilla steak to cook at home. The look of the butcher was one of laughter and disgust that I couldn't speak Spanish. Needless to say I haven't been back. Lets not even bring Miami in the conversation because that's a whole other story. Where are all the friendly people? Waving at my neighbors and getting a wave back is an anomaly. Even in public people look so pissed off. When I smile and say good morning they look at me like I have a penis growing out of my head. Occasionally, I'll get a friendly response, but it don't happen much. Crime, homeless beggars on the every street corner, on every exit of I-95, is a bitch. Do I give them a buck, do I look straight forward, do I pray I get a green light, do I roll my window up. Is a common theme played out as I travel around South Florida. Shootings, kidnappings, drugs, pedophiles, locked front doors, bars on homes, locked and loaded handguns, AR-15 at the ready, and state of the art surveillance equipment is the norm in South Florida. What's crazy is we all have become numb with craziness that its become normal. Well it ain't normal folks. What makes South Florida A-OK is the weather, the fact that I'm a native here, the outdoor activities , the diversity, and the great Cuisine. I love the town I grew up in Oakland Park. It's now seeing a rebirth with the Funky Budda opening up and a Culinary Arts district in the works. My present home town, Coral Springs is an oasis compared to most cities, with its beautiful parks, A rated public schools, great recreation and arts programs. With Parkland next door you can't beat the one two punch that these cities deliver when it comes to a good hometown vibe. But as they say. Happiness and Good schools come at a price and it ain't cheap. As I was driving home from beautiful No Name Key this weekend, I got into the City Limits of Coral Springs, I looked over at my wife and said, Damn Its good to be home. Is any hometown area 5 stars? No. I think if you ask someone who lives in New York City they would say the same thing. Unless you came to South Florida on vacation then it would be hard not to give it 5 stars. But I live here and I see all its flaws but I still love/hate the place. With that said, I don't plan on moving anytime soon.

I mean really, we live in it, we have two Yelp communities with it, it has local and regional flavor to it and while most of us live in it, no one has mentioned what it is that we live in. South Florida or as some refer to it, "SoFlo," is a vernacular not an official definition of an area of the United States entirely unique. Since it isn't officially defined, I'll define it as being Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, being more generally defined by its location in and near the Florida peninsula and the tropical climate even though there exist a host of arguments as to whether or not Broward is in fact tropical. Then also, with out a doubt, there a state of mind different than that of the rest of Florida. Let me begin with it how South Florida was created. It's my theory that South Florida as we know it today was created by God. In creating it he took the earth, tilted it, and everything loose fell into South Florida. The proof of my theory is evident by the huge diversity of population. We have massive numbers of migrants from the north, immigrants from all over the Caribbean, South America and even from Europe, Russia and Thailand just to name a few. No other area of the world that I know of has such diversity. The fact that even my official voting ballot in Broward County is written in three different languages and that we conduct studies using 27 different languages in our Broward County school system clearly stands out as concrete proof of what I have to say. An even better example which is known to all Yelpers are our diversity in restaurants and cafes. Like where else can you go to a Chinese Restaurant, then go next door for a French pastry or dessert and then on to a Cuban café for a cup of Cuban Coffee. Just a mere reading of the Yelp restaurant reviews of the area covers a much bigger diversity in ethnic foods than any other area covered by Yelp, a wonderful thing for a foodie and so often taken for granted by those of us who live here in what is our paradise. The other thing is that South Florida is only tied to the rest of the State of Florida by certain political and economic ties. Other than that, South Florida and South Floridians have little if anything in common with the remainder of that state be it political (South Florida is liberal the remainder of the state conservative), religious cultural and ethnic diversity and of course what concernsus as Yelpers the most, is the diversity in food and restaurants.
