The owner, Jamie, is an incredible, loving, knowledgeable, dedicated, and creative teacher who truly loves the kids lucky enough to attend her program. I credit this program for my daughter's love of learning, artistic abilities, early knowledge of being able to read and write the alphabet, and love of nature (Jamie has a lovely backyard and vegetable garden for the kids to play and learn in). Highly recommend!

The kids will learn numbers, letters, and Chinese words throughout the day. They also have a backyard for outdoor activities. Every so often they also have field trip to the close by park and library. At the end of the year, the kids will perform variety of dance recital to show the dances and songs they learned here. The director here Jamie has a degree in Children's early education, and she is very sensitive on each child's learning ability and would modify her class based on a child's needs. With her help, my son passed his Chinese test when submitting application for Public school and essentially got into CIS at De Avlia. Whether is a draw of luck or not, I still appreciate all the extra time Jamie put into guiding my son. The environment - this is a small child care (max. 12) but it's well equipped with everything. And since it's been running for many years, they run it like a well oiled machine. The downside is that it is on the ground floor. The pricing - affordable

They're gentle and fun and keep the kids engaged. They have a huge backyard with plenty of open space for the kids to play, as well as a large garden with a ton of different fruits and vegetables that the kids help plant and tend to. Our kids have come home many times with huge bounties of guavas, cherries, zucchinis, and more, which they devour. Speaking of which, our kids eat so much with them because they home cook each meal daily, and have plenty of snacks. Knowing their food is taken care of is such a huge relief from having to think about what the kids will eat everyday. The caregivers are very responsive and send sweet videos and photos of the kids throughout the day. In almost all of them the kids are having a blast and interacting well with all the other kids. The price is right, the food is good, and the care given by the caregivers is top notch. I'd give them a 10/5 if I could. Cannot recommend enough!

Not only have they loved and nurtured our baby boy but they have created a beautiful place for kiddos to learn, play and thrive. They have great hours for working parents and flexible drop off and pickups. They also offer meals: breakfast, lunch and snacks. They created a curriculum that allows the kids to learn the basics of English and Spanish. In addition, they have incorporated the neighborhood into the kids schedules with regular visits to the nearby parks & library. It's been so comforting knowing that our son was always loved and safe while we were working. He is so attached to both of them and we're not quite sure how we're going to make the transition to a new preschool. Last thing I'll mention is that the pricing is also very competitive for other options nearby/locally. We cannot recommend them enough for young families in the Portola, Bayview, Vis Valley, Excelsior or Bernal.

Yi-yi (Aunty), what my daughter calls Mary, made sure she was ready for preschool! We had a wonderful experience. My daughter always looked forward to going to Yi-yi's house. Mary is patient, kind and gentle with children. She was a great support for us and a valuable partner as our daughter achieved her developmental milestones - weaning, self-feeding, potty training. I was always so impressed whenever my son came home learning sign language as an infant, new songs, the alphabet, etc - the list is long! Rosalia has been taking good care of our son for 6 months (since February 2023), when he was 16…read moremonths old. We eased him in starting with mornings for a couple weeks, and eventually started him napping there. Schedule / cost: earliest drop off is 7:30am, latest drop off is 8:30, although there's some flexibility until 9am, but maximum time each day for a child can be there is 8.5hrs. Breakfast is at 9am, lunch is at 12, nap 1-3pm. Pickup by 4:30pm. The cost is very affordable, although I won't share exactly what I pay it's much less than other larger daycares in the area. The value is close to that of a nanny share since the group is small. Environment: the in-home care takes place in the front rooms of her little house where she lives. The vibe is older, a little worn, but fresh paint, new rug and very clean and tidy. Honestly I've never seen a speck of dirt, things are always in their places! For this reason I get a sense that she is very regimented, and there is a daily schedule that allows her to keep everything so neat, The kids sleep in the front room, at nap time (1-3pm) but it converts to play space at other times, the second room has the changing table and toy shelves, and the next room further back is the kitchen where they eat breakfast and lunch (we bring our lunch, I think she may have changed this before we started). I believe she also provides a snack in the afternoon but we usually pick up at 3:30pm. There is a narrow side yard with playhouse, a slide and ride-on cars, and a bathroom attached to the kitchen which I've used and it is perfectly clean always. Her bedroom and possibly additional living space is beyond the kitchen at the back of the house which I have never seen. She lives alone but her sister Marina visits from Columbia sometimes and was there to help when Aero was getting accustomed to his new environment. She was very kind and smily, always playing with him when I came to pick up. Sleep: She was willing to ease him into napping when we first started too since he was accustomed to only being assisted to sleep (stroller, car or co-sleeping). She started with rocking him while giving a bottle, then eventually stopped the rocking, and finally he would hold the bottle himself and put himself to sleep. After about a month or so of napping there he sleeps 1.75-2hrs unassisted at her house on a little cot next to the other kids. She plays quiet gentle music while the kids sleep. Art / music: art activities have so far been minimal, but since we do other art stuff at home, I am not concerned. I hear music on when I arrive sometimes and I noticed right away that he picked up some hand motions to some songs, so I get the sense that she sings with them sometimes. I am not sure how often. Kids: most toddlers seem to age out of her program between 2-3 years. Since we have only been there for 6 months, we started at 4 kids and now there are only 2 kids. I believe she is starting to reduce her numbers and told me she may only take one more kid when the oldest goes to preschool. Rosalia: she is a kind, loving, patient, older person. She speaks Spanish and English to the kids. She communicates primarily in person or a phone call and rarely texts. She does read my text messages but she doesn't use her phone much during the day while the kids are there. She is usually more available during the kids nap time, in the e mornings around 8am-8:15am or after 4/4:30pm. She is a mom of several grown children and has 9 grandchildren and many family members that live in the area.

For us, Rosalia Patarroyo (the proprietor of Candyhouse) is part of our extended family, because she helped us shape our child into the lovely sweet person he is today. Rosalia cared for our elder son when he was just 4 months old until after he turned 2, and we will be sending our 2nd son to her in the fall. In addition to a loving, caring, safe and clean environment, Rosalia teaches critical social skills like kindness, sharing, and eating together. The mix of older and younger kids creates a sense of community - the older kids learn to be kind and caring toward the little ones, and the younger kids learn basic skills from the older kids. Rosalia's home cooked meals guarantee your kid will become a flexible eater and appreciator of simple wholesome foods like veggies, rice and beans. Her prices are very reasonable. And it is easiest to call her to set up a time to speak in person. She is not a sales person, but rather a fantastic care giver. Remember that these two don't always go together, which is why she doesn't have a website and is pretty low-key on the business front. :-) There is a big group of parents whose kids went here who will also vouch for Rosalia - check out the Bernal Heights Parents group for more info, and contact me if you have questions.

What made it so special was Pyrena. She is honestly the best caregiver we've ever met -- caring, knowledgeable, and always learning something new. You can tell she loves what she does. She also trains the staff, so everyone there is kind, calm, and amazing with kids. From talking to other parents, I've realized how rare this is. There are very few daycares where caregivers treat your child like their own, and that's exactly how Pyrena treated ours. The bond they built made it really hard to leave. Nothing we've seen since even comes close. She also planned so many activities for every age -- sensory play, early learning, motor skills, group time, independent time. Our daughter grew so much socially, physically, and intellectually because of those daily routines. One thing I loved was how much time the kids spent outside. Our daughter has always been calmer and happier outdoors, and Pyrena understood that. The outdoor time alone made such a difference for her. And I have to mention the food. The meals and snacks were always fresh, healthy, and homemade. Pyrena cooked real food with fresh produce every day, including a lot of Chinese dishes. Because of that, our daughter eats everything now and isn't picky at all -- she actually loves Chinese food! It's a rare thing to feel completely at peace leaving your baby somewhere, but that's how we felt every single day. We're incredibly grateful for the start our daughter got here. If you're lucky enough to get a spot, take it.
