I was visiting a resident. It makes no sense to complain to the head of their social work department who seems like they don't care. The guests go around taking supplies. Little bugs flying aĺl over. The room window screens have holes and need to be replaced. If you give gratuity, they take care of your loved one. The portion of servings are for babies and not adults. Some workers are very nice while others are not. I could not believe this lady social worker who was called Martinez who was yelling and screaming at a resident. Isabella Nursing Home was truly a Godsend for my dad and our family. It all began with an incredible human being named Dolores Roque. She not only did her job to the fullest, but she also took the time to truly listen to me--a daughter living out of town, feeling helpless and desperate to get her father closer to family as his health was declining. Her compassion, patience, and dedication meant more to me than words can express. My overall experience with this facility was phenomenal. From the doctors, to the social workers, to the chaplain, and later Mike with hospice--every single person we encountered showed genuine care, professionalism, and heart. The entire team and staff are absolutely PHENOMENAL. Thank you for giving my father the dignity, attention, and care he deserved until his very last day. My son has been there for close to 20 years. Isbella CTR has been getting worse every year. His clothes get tagged with his name. But they won't take responsibility in replacing this loss / stolen clothes. The social worker / administrators never answers emails. They could get 2 or 3 emails still no reply. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL from the administrations and workers. Forget about phone calls you could leave several message. Phone calls go unanswered. The elevators could take 20 to 30 minutes to get into one. Very interesting on how they will turn this around. Very LOW leadership in this place. Staffing is always a BIG issue. read more

I stayed here for almost two weeks some years back. I was on disability at the time, and I had Medicare. My experience was not entirely pleasant, but it also had its good points: the nurses on duty at that time, the attention I received was slow at first, but my spouse was able to advocate for me. I was housed in a room on the rehab side that had 2 beds in it. I had a not-so-good neighbor at the time. She was so rude to the nurses on our watch. The downside of the experience was the leaking hot water faucet in the bathroom that was never addressed while I was there. It made the room hot and stinky. The other downside was the food. Today I went to visit a friend who is also staying there. I asked about the food and he said it was horrendous. I shook my head to myself in disbelief. It seems to me that because people are poor they are fed sub-fresh food, over cooked vegetables, and things that look outdated. I was hoping to hear that the food had improved, but no. I really wish they would feed everyone good food, fresh produce, things that are not soggy and overcooked. There is always room for improvement. read more

They murdered my grandmother and the nurse that killed her got away with it. My grandmother stayed here for a few months between 2019-2020, we would find mysterious bruises on her body--arms and legs; turns out her nurse was pinching her constantly to inflict pain when my grandmother was noncompliant. Filed a complaint. Nothing was done. The nurse "forgot" to put the safety rails on my grandmother's bed, and my grandmother fell off the bed and broke her hip. She was left there in pain, crying out for 20 to 30 minutes before any help was administered. The fractured hip caused her to fall ill and ultimately die from complications from pneumonia. On the death certificate the nursing home put the cause of death as pneumonia, which is a lie because it was complications due to hip fracture. I had to argue in order to get the proper cause of death listed on her death certificate. They attempted to cover up their responsibility in her death by blaming it on the illness instead of the cause of the illness. Like everyone else says, if you love your family, please please please don't send them here! read more

My mom has been living at Isabella for a couple of years. She has always received excellent care. The staff is responsive and any concerns I've had, have been addressed in a timely manner. Everyone treats mom with love and respect. I would recommend this place. read more

ISABELLA DESERVES A MINUS ZERO!!! If you care about your loved ones DON'T SEND THEM HERE! This place is a HORROR SHOW of neglect and abuse. They drug their patients into submission! Isabellas staff on the Dementia floors almost killed my mother twice and the higher ups simply do not care. Most recently she was being starved, literally... while I desperately searched for another nursing home to switch her to. My mother went from fully awake, walking and dancing to sleeping all the time. When my family and I insisted on knowing why my mother was sleeping so much, unable to wake, they insisted she was just tired... My mother is in an advanced stage of Dementia but was very active. Noever in need of a wheelchair or walker. Moving her out of Isabella was not a simple task because Dementia victims need routine. The stress of a new place can be dangerous even lethal to them. They need stability and she knew and recognized some of the people at Isabellas so we told ourselves we would be present all the time and help in her care taking. They complained about my mother being feisty then suddenly she was in a deep sleep with no explanation. They insisted they weren't drugging her but I am certain whatever was done to her was chemical. She tried to fight the sleep but wan't coming out of it. I insisted on reviewing her medication, no changes on paper. I asked about her eating/drinking, they insisted she was doing both... even though we weren't seeing it no matter what time we visited. When I inquired about taking her to the hospital I was told, time and again, it was not necessary, she was fine! After a week of not finding her awake, we took her to ER against the Isabella Nurse and Social worker advice. My mother was dying! Severely dehydrated and suffering from malnutrition again, Isabella had no answers. The doctors in ER insisted she had not been fed or hydrated for a long period of time. They assured me she would have died had I not taken her in to the ER but weren't sure she'd survive. She spent two weeks in the hospital in critical condition with no response. She was hydrated and given vitamins through IV. Unfortunately this was not my first near death due to ISABELLA'S negligence... My mother had at another time been given an overdose of a seizure medication called Dylantin. At that time I had also been told she was "just tired"! I rushed her to the ER where I was interrogated by doctors who thought I had been the one poisoning my mother! Their words! They were unaware she had been living at the isabella Nursing home. I complained to the higher ups profusely and for months. The nurse who administered the drug should have been fired! When I called her from the hospital she could not have cared less. Told me she was too busy to discuss my mother as she had other residents to tend to. She was allowed to continue to work at Isabellas. Their answer to our demands was to move the offending nurse to another floor. My family and I were able to prove negligence on her part and they responded by protecting her and making excuses. We told ourselves it was ONE bad apple in the bunch. We aligned ourselves with several of the Aides in the hopes of securing my mothers stay and continued to visit up to 6 days a week. The Aides are overworked, the place is understaffed and the floaters are young women who don't care and feel too young for such a huge responsibility of tending to the elderly and sick. My mom had very prominent and often specific bruising to grabbing, showing up throughout her body and Isabella staff would not report them to us often claiming they hadn't seen them even though my mother was bathed and changed daily. We, the family, would usually find the bruising upon our own inspections which we started to do at every visit complete with pictures. We complained constantly, held them to task, demanded answers and reported them to the Dept of Health and things would get better for a little while then worse! In fact my complaining may have led to this... We are super advocates, super active and beyond present on behalf of our mom. Residents with no family support or visitors have no chance of surviving this evil place. Visit during the late shift and you'll be hard pressed to find an employee (aide or nurse) on the floor. The residence are left soiled for long periods of time and roaming the hallways unattended. Also we have arrived at all hours of the night with no one even aware we had been there. Terrible place for a family member. If your patient has a trach run from this place. So under staffed . A floor has about 15 patients and maybe two nurses. On a Sunday there was no staff when i walked out the room to leave not even at the front desk of that floor. No monitors. The public bathroom on that floor was disgusting . There was a bag of Tubes left behind a dresser drawer. who knows how long those bags were there. The only person you saw continuously was the gentleman cleaning the hall way floor. You will see him more than the nurses. The check in for visitors is so long. Finding the elevators the hall ways are empty so you have to hope you find your way. Oh and you have to take a Rapid Covid Test. Oh and they just keep the fan directly on the patient with the windows open. Such an easy way to someone who cant move sick. The sheet are thin. This is not the place for your family. Please check on your family if they are at this location. read more

Close to the subway, decent though insufficient staffing unless you can afford private care (like everywhere else, care is expensive!), but it really helps that this is a non-profit. I can't imagine what cost-cutting measures for-profits take. Most of the workers are nice, at least those I interacted with. It helps to have a family member who visits often--patients need advocates. Areas are clean and the menu is quite decent and varied. read more

I have a cousin who is a long-term resident of this center. Although I have seen the negative ratings, she has always expressed feeling safe and well-cared for there. I was really worried about the Covid-19 outbreaks in nursing homes, but my cousin reassured me she was comfortable with their safety measures. My only personal experience with staff has been with Frank in the mail room. I have called him twice over the past year to follow up on mail I sent, my cousin did not receive. Each time, he has tracked down the item and found it. He called me back to let me know. I appreciate his patience, courtesy and professional attitude. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. My dad was there for two years due to falling twice and breaking both hips and other medical issues. As his health deteriorated, that is when I noticed how badly run this place is. When he really needed their care, I could see the neglect, indifference and apathy of this place. If you have three nurses on the floor, you are lucky to have one that is kind. The administrative staff are clueless and nurses are mean. We tried getting him to leave but because of his dementia he refused because he didn't like change and we didn't want to upset him. Patients roam around urinated and with vomit on their shirts and nobody bats an eye. They sit for hours by the elevators in their wheelchairs neglected. If your loved one needs help being fed, good luck. My dad lost thirty pounds in a matter of months. We were finally convinced by a doctor at Columbia to give him hospice services because it was too late to do anything for him at that point and when we did, my dad was gone in a matter of two weeks. Yet even after signing the Do not hospitalize paperwork, Isabella still sent my dad to an "appointment" and then the ER. I only knew because when I went to visit, he wasn't in his bed. Nobody called to tell us. They promised they would bring him back that evening, but he wasn't returned until 6 am the next morning. Even though the social worker called me and said he was on way back to Isabella at 7 pm. I would have gone to the hospital and sat with him. They also didn't call to say, you should come because he is not looking good today. We all work and relied on Isabella to take care of him. When we called during the day, they would say he is fine, he is talking and eating. The least they could have done was call and say come sit with him. He passed at 2:38 pm and they called me at 3 pm to notify me. At 4:30 pm, the social worker came into the room while we were all there grieving over his body and asked if we made arrangements that his body needed to be picked up that day. They dialed the Ortiz funeral home for me and put me on the phone. Ortiz told me they were on way out and that he can stay at Isabella that night since they have a cooling area. Isabella wanted him out. As we were leaving someone we have never dealt with stopped us to talk about my dad's account with Isabella and to tell us he didn't have any money in the account. My mom said, that is not true, she replied oh well, I wouldn't know about that. I couldn't understand why this woman was talking to us and what was the purpose of the conversation. So we left him there and made arrangements with another funeral home other than the Ortiz for his body to be picked up on Sunday morning (Riverdale Funeral Home are wonderful by the way). Isabella called me on Sunday around 4:30 pm that he needed to be picked up. I called the Riverdale funeral home furious and they assured me that my dad was picked up that morning and was in their care and that I didn't need to deal with Isabella anymore. I called Isabella back and said my dad is no longer there and she said "ohhh I am sorry, I was following up on an email I received last night." Why wouldn't you check before calling me! I am furious at myself for putting my dad in that horrible place and leaving him there. He was only 66 years old and was shuttled back and forth from Isabella to Columbia hospital 5 times in one month. He was like a ping pong ball that nobody cared about. He passed away on 5/17/2019 and I am still raw and sad and now angry on how these past two years played out. The cause of death was not even clear on the death certificate. They basically listed all his ailments. I feel it should say NEGLECT. Please DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE IN THIS PLACE!! DO YOUR RESEARCH! I feel bad for all those left behind at Isabella. read more

I do NOT recommend this place. If you love your family member please DO NOT! I repeat do not bring them to this place. They don't care for the patients. When a patient needs someone they take a very very long time to come. They don't feed these patients the way they should! They just put their trays in the room doing a half ass job! They don't wash and clean up the patients the way they should. We want our family members to be treated as if they was family members of the staff at this place. I've witness a patient waiting & waiting for someone to come to attend him. This place sucks! & we will go above and beyond to make this place pay for what they are putting my family through. Was with a friend who was visiting a relative at Isabella. Happened to walk into an art show there in Isabella. Pretty cool since it was all art created by the people who live there. Didn't realize it was a big place by what my friend said until I got there and saw for myself. Nice friendly people. they helped me to learn how to walk after a 4 month hospital stay. physical therapists great! nursing staff didnt know how to deal with infection or an ostomy bag, tgey were useless. tgey hardly ever came to check on me until the night i fell trying to get to the bathroom. dont recommend! read more

I have never written a Yelp review before. If it was at all possible, I would give zero stars. My father was in Isabella for two days and we had to move him out of the facility before they killed him. I have never witnessed such neglect in my life. The staff was ill informed and uncaring. The first night that my father was in the facility, he fell out of bed. This probably would not have been discovered until morning, if my mother had not called and asked the nurse to check on him. When I arrived the next morning and asked for a doctor to examine my father because he fell out of bed, the morning nursing staff looked puzzled and said, "he fell out of bed?" When I went into his room, he was almost completely naked and had dirty paper towels on his stomach, which no one was able to explain. My father was on a feeding tube and a trachea tube so it was necessary to keep him at a 30 degree angle in the bed. For some reason, they kept leaving him flat. I was in the corridor speaking to the doctor when I heard my father choking. I ran into the room. As I lifted the angle of the bed and removed the speaking valve from the trachea tube, he started projectile vomiting through the tube. The doctor who followed me into the room looked shocked and said, "I have never seen that before." After they finally, (because it took a very long time) cleaned him up, someone had broken the bed and left him with his legs bent at the knees at a 45 degree angle. While vomiting, he aspirated and got pneumonia. If you care for your relative, you should avoid this facility at all costs. read more

I was recently a patient at Isabella Geriatirc Center. I would say the care I received was excellent. The staff were dedicated and seemed to genuinely care about me. The PT/OT staff were trully wonderful, patient, engaging, encouraging. Is iIabella perfect? Of course not. some mistakes were made, but I got the sense staff were trying to continuoulsy improve. Now, I was only there a short while (3 weeks) so I can not speak to the nursing home aspect. I did meet a few long term residents at reecreational activites (which seemed frequent and vaied and which i enjoyed) and they did seem reasonably happy given they were in a situation no one really wants. But,we are all high functioning and motivated people. For people not in ths category, the experience might be very different. If I had any general criticism it would be this; there were a group of patients generally parked by the nurse's station. Now, I do believe their basic needs were attended to. But, I didn't really observe anyone spending much time trying to engage or improve their cognitive functioning. A more personal criticism would be the food. I am vegetatian, and they seemed a bit challenged by that! What was served was bland and repetitious, but I didn't really expect gourmet cuisine. My only other complaint is a real uxury one, the Wifi wasn't very good! I chose Isabella based on reviews like this. I'm going for a 2nd hip replacement in a week, and I feel no need to look for another facility. I'm glad I chose Isabella. They helped. I hope you find this info. help[ful. read more

Very good CNA program available at this facility. And not to mention the nurse instructor who is an extremely wonderful teacher and person. I highly recommend this place. I've came across many staff members who happen to be very pleasant, professional and friendly and so far I have no complaints. read more
