I, however, insisted on trying it out first. Luckily, I did. The gym was tiny, dank, and dirty. The atmosphere was uncomfortable, with men walking around grunting and even farting--definitely not my scene. My husband, on the other hand, decided to stick with it due to its proximity to our home. He figured the low cost and convenience made it worthwhile, so he developed a routine and stuck with it. Then the hurricane hit, and the gym was closed for over a month. My husband lost his routine, and I didn't want him going back because we never saw any professional remediation company address potential hurricane damage. Despite our concerns, when we tried to cancel his membership, the nightmare got worse. We called the 34th Street location (where we signed up) to cancel, only to be told they couldn't process it because the 34th location had "never closed." That's despite the fact that Pasadena--the gym he actually used --had been flooded. We were forced to sign up at 34th only because the Pasadena location was never open for signups, but their records clearly showed his usage at Pasadena. In the end, they refused to cancel his membership and scammed him out of over $500 for a service he couldn't even use.

So I travel a lot and spend time in different towns as I work remotely and it allows me to be mobile. Usually, I would just get a national plan from 24hour fitness but there are no 24hour fitness locations in the area. So I went with a friend of mine as a guest. I think the machines are well maintained, most of them work just fine, have clear signs if they are being worked on, and even in busy times, I had no problem getting on a machine to work out. My 3/5 stars has nothing to do with that. What happened was that I was standing behind someone waiting to sign in a guest. as a business analyst I know that this is a great opportunity to upsell the membership and that is just good business, but the way the Esporta Fitness employee went about it was off-putting. I was standing behind someone else and the employee said, "want to become a member? The customer said, " I don't do that". As a respecter of upselling there is a right way and wrong way to go about the next statement. The employee did the wrong thing. He said, "you have something against fitness?" Nope, wrong question. What you're supposed to say is, "we have great trial periods and make it really easy to cancel anytime, our monthly fees are low and if you come more than X number of days that more than pays for the membership, yadayadayada". I was standing in fear that I was going to be inundated with a similar upsale tactic and that I was going to lose my s*&t. So he didn't say that to me, what he said was, "can you believe that guy? All I'm trying to do is tell him about our membership and he gives me attitude!" Nope, wrong statement. If this reflects Esporta Fitness I will be looking for alternatives to my short terms fitness solutions. If this is a one-off, consider this my complaint about the employee to the establishment. There's plenty of parking in the front and the back and at night they have a cleaner who comes and refreshes the bathroom and mops the floor. Even still, the gym is pretty filthy though if you look at different areas, you can see where dust has collected, dirt, and sweat. I really wish they had more regular cleaning and actual wipes instead of paper towel towels with a cleaning solution on it to wipe the machines when finished. The space is small so they have to do what they can with the space but the equipment is placed relatively close. I also wish it were permitted for members to use the personal training area when sessions are not ongoing because that equipment appears to largely be unused. Planet Fitness unlike other gyms also does not have a sauna, but they do have tanning and Hydro massage chairs. The goodie bags that they sell are extremely outdated so I would like to see them improve that as well, but I will not be purchasing it regardless. Now that I have stopped personal training at my other gym, I may end up canceling both planet fitness and the other gym and just joining a gym with all of my favorite amenities plus being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For all these reasons, I would rank this planet fitness three out of five stars. The thing that would bring planet fitness to a higher ranking cleanliness, other offers or amenities and maybe a reorganization of the equipment.
