Terry is a good guy and cares about what he does. This is a family run business and I had a very nice time I had chatting with the owner's wife, and son (and dog) while waiting for my battery to be installed. I was going to get towed into Ft Myers since AAA doesn't offer their highly publicized battery service on Sanibel (they should publicize that part)! But Terry jumped my SUV and said he had a battery in stock so that was that faster option for about the same price and saved me time and energy going 40 min each way into Ft. Myers. They are friendly & well priced, especially being on the island and not in town. When they are determining the problem, you can walk to Jerry's and eat/shop and they will call you with the issue to see if you want it fixed. Call ahead before just stopping by to see how busy they are. I did not have an emergency but every time I have had a smaller issue it has been resolved. read more

Make sure to call ahead and schedule an appointment. I suspect Island garage is on island time. I took my car to them and they did some troubleshooting for a shake in my front end. They could have told me it was anything but they were very honest with me. They did the least amount of work possible to get the problem adequately solved until I got the car back to Ohio. (Checked and rebalanced some badly imbalanced front tires) Terry was very friendly and knowledgeable and had some good tips on how to troubleshoot this problem in the future. If you're not in a huge hurry this is the place to go for your on island, gotta get it done before I go home needs. read more

We encountered this gas station via AAA, as we were in need of roadside assistance. We requested a jack as we had a flat tire and they said there were three cars ahead of us. When I called back an hour and a half later, mysteriously they said there were six cars now ahead of us, and they couldn't change a tire but could only tow us to their station. ( where believe it or not they SELL tires) quite the scam. Island garage never had any intention of assisting us, just ripping us off, like everyone else. Just read the other reviews. To end this review on a great note, the Captiva Fire Department drove by, and a group of their firefighters laid underneath our precariously jacked up SUV, wrestled with our wheel, got us to their garage, and fixed our tire so we can make it home safely. Very fast, efficient, and relatively cheap for the island. The guys were very kind and the gift shop in front gives out free chocolate! My car battery died while I was on vacation in sanibel and we went here because it was the only garage on the island. The guy was very nice, although not too talkative which i can see people mistaking for being short or rude, and even ordered a battery from off island when he didn't have one. I called for a dead battery while on vacation. I asked them to bring a battery in case mine was totally dead. They didn't. Showed up and gave me 5 minutes to charge my battery in a large SUV off of the driver' sold tiny pick up truck. It didn't take a charge after 5 mins. He wanted to leave. I asked for 5 more mins and he grudgingly agreed but it still didn't work. He offered to bring back a battery but said it would cost an additional $55 trip fee. Nice. I refused. I'd rather call another location and spend pay them a trip fee than pay these guys double for nothing. I called the BP station and they came and used a charger together with a jumper cable hooked to their car and got me started in 30 seconds. read more

Got stranded on Sanibel when our truck died. As a AAA member, I called roadside assistance which usually provides fast, efficient service. They told me Island Garage would be there within 45 minutes to tow is back to Cape Coral. After several more calls to AAA to inquire why the tow truck hadn't arrived yet, they finally showed up over 2 hours later. The driver said he was late due to a miscommunication. Pretty poor customer service, especially when we were going to be paying the tow company over $100 for the tow since we lived more than 5 miles from where our vehicle broke down. read more

I live on the Sanibel Island. Removed a tire from my sedan and drove it to the garage in my Cadillac SRX. Entered the garage to speak to the only man there. He admonished me to go back out and enter through the front door, only then he would talk with me. I left the tire with him for repair and collected it that afternoon. He told me that he had patched it from the inside rather than use a plug, making it sound important as though I have no experience with that sort of thing. I knew what was coming . . . $45.00 to repair a flat; and, he didn't blink an eye. He wouldn't even load the repaired tire into the rear of the SRX - he appeared to think that he's too good for that . . . this is a garage merchant for heaven's sake! Last time I had a flat repaired was during a motor trip - $12.00. You might argue, "Well, the garage is on Sanibel Island." My response would be, "The repair is the same all over; they do it no differently on Sanibel Island." His is the only garage on the Island and he behaves accordingly. He behaves as though he couldn't care less about return business. In other words, he'll do the work if he wants to, at his convenience and at an arbitrary price depending upon how he sizes you up. Caveat emptor! I suggest that you use this garage only as a last resort. read more

Take your vehicle to Chevron down the street if you're needing maintenance or repairs. We made the mistake of stopping by Island one afternoon to drop off a tire for repair. The mechanic on duty wouldn't respond to us, despite being about 5 feet away from us in the office. Was kind of bizarre. The other guy on duty, don't know if he was a mechanic or not, stepped in to relay our questions the couple of feet to the nimrod. Turns out he would NOT look at the nail in our tire today, even though the tire was off the vehicle and sitting in our trunk, he MIGHT be able to get to it the following morning about 1030. Guys at Chevron said they get a lot of complaints about Island, fixed the tire in about 5 minutes, and got a big tip. read more

This place is terrible. I took my car to Island Garage on Tuesday as I was having issues with the battery they told me there was nothing wrong with the battery. I went out that night and and low and behold my car died. I called AAA and they sent out Island Garage I told them I had taken the car there that day and after they jumped started me they told me that it would be fine after driving it would charge it. When I went out to go to work on Wednesday the car battery had died again. I called AAA and again they sent out Island Garage said they would be there in 1 hour, I requested a tow to another shop; Island Garage told me they would bring me out a battery no need to tow it to another shop. I told them that yesterday they told me it was not the battery and no I did not want them to bring a battery out. Well that was not right thing to say because after over 5 calls to AAA and being told each time the "the driver is in the vicinity" I am still waiting for Island Garage to tow my car over 7 HOURS LATER. read more

They were very short and rude with me. I dropped my car off and they said they would try to get to it. It was only a oil change. After 7 hours I went to go pick up my car and the never reset the service light. I went back in and asked them to turn it off they said to bring it back another time. I don't have time to do that and then they looked at me like I was asking for a lot. Even though the price was good bad customer service will not bring me back. read more

Very kind and helpful. Towed our van there with AAA and then found that the solution wasn't something that could be replaced. They could have given us a different story and put in a part that wasn't needed but they told us how to deal with the problem if it ever happens again and sent us on our way without a charge. read more

On a vacation to Sanibel Island in January 2014, we had a flat tire on our rental car, which was parked at our hotel. We called Island Garage for help. They said they would be over in an hour. They arrived in about 30 minutes, replaced the flat with our spare, and took the flat tire back to their garage to see if it could be repaired. They were busy that day but gave us a specified time to come to the garage the next day. They were able to repair the tire, on time and for a very reasonable price. They were friendly and helpful throughout and we were able to continue to enjoy our vacation. I cannot say enough about the service they provided. read more

I have been using Island Garage for a couple of years, since I moved to Sanibel. I use them regularly for servicing and the odd mechanical problem. It is a funky, old-fashioned sort of place, and there is no slickness about it, but they have always done good work for me at a fair price and are nice about giving sane advice as well. They are generally very accommodating about letting me leave the car before they open or pick it up after they close. read more
