What size should I buy for two? What is the best one for simple steaming? Where is what I am looking for? What is the difference among these different tanks? A gentleman who was working here caught me and answered all these questions, and located a perfect size, super lively lobster suitable for steaming! He was knowledgeable about different cooking options, and as soon as he knows we are Japanese, he showed me different sashimi grade seafood and handling tips. We bought - A live lobster (1.5lb) about $30 - 6 sashimi grade shrimps $ less than 10 He was so kind to make sure all the shrimps are the same size. Sashimi was beautiful, fresh and naturally sweet, melt on the tongue. I deep-fried the shrimp head and tail as the gentleman suggested - crispy, thin! All oysters are the same price, at $3.50 each. My friend got a plate of malpeques and I got the lucky limes, which looked the biggest and fattest. When the shucker was taking my order I asked him to pick out some big ones for me and he kindly obliged - I was very happy with how plump my oysters were. My friend also got a free extra oyster because a couple were a bit on the smaller size. The staff are very busy but they were still very nice and accommodating. With my friend's larger order she got a free container of horseradish but normally all the oysters only come served with lemon and a squirt of hot sauce (no mignonette). Overall $3.50 is definitely more expensive than your typical buck a shuck but the quality is very good and you can taste (and see) the difference. If the ordering/lineup process was a little more smooth and they included more accoutrements for the oysters this place would be a 5/5 from me. To hell with industrialized canned, frozen and supermarket fish. At Hooked, they pride themselves in offering only fresh seafood that has been ethically sourced from sustainable stock. The level of detail is unlike most other places and makes for a unique experience. For example, you'll notice they note exactly where their products are from--"Halibut from Haida Gwaii, BC," as opposed to your usual supermarket variety "Product of Canada." Wonderful for those who really like to know where their food comes from. (Imagine if fashion stores took the same approach...) Hooked also prides itself on staffing its stores (they have a Kensington location as well) with chefs and folks with deep culinary experience. The folks here are patient, but always oozing with knowledge and advice to share. Tell them what you are planning to make or do and they'll suggest a fish from whatever is on offer and advice on how to make your meal. They don't make you feel intimidated at all. They'll probably even tell you a bedtime story about where their products come from. They'll often suggest and cut an appropriate amount for how many you'll be serving. Don't know how appropriate the amount really is, because we end up eating more than we should. Because that's how good their fish are. And their shrimp also. Those who think their dirt-cheap factory-farmed fed-with-crap shipped-frozen-en-masse Thai shrimp is good stuff don't even know what they are missing. Because, once you taste some big-ass wild-caught shrimp like that sold by Hooked, your tastebuds will be telling those tasteless supermarket shrimp to piss off. Because that's how good their shrimp are. I know they offer culinary classes and events here, as well as herbs, spices and sauces to go with your seafood. But most notably, you'll be reeled in by the degree of service you'll never get at most other seafood counters. Their stock will cost you an extra arm, but cheap food isn't cheap, and neither is good food. Quality is emphasized here much over low low prices. It was full when I walked in for a party of 2 and was greeted by a man who was very enthusiastic about the restaurant. We quickly learned afterwards that he was indeed the owner of the restaurant when he showed us his Oyster Boy tattoo - adorable! We got seated quickly after and ordered a drink and 6 oysters. The waitress forgot to put in my oyster order so when my partner was almost done with his beer, I still didn't have my oysters yet. Not a problem since we were waiting for a another location anyway. But boy, when the oyster came - it did not disappoint! The oysters were freshly shucked, came with the best sauces and was exactly what I needed for the night.
