Captain Dan took us all around Chincoteague and Assateague, including up into the shallow marshes where the smaller boat could get us wonderfully close to the wildlife and scenery. We saw bald eagles, the Chincoteague ponies, Assateague Lighthouse, and some absolutely beautiful parts of the islands that you just can't appreciate from the road. You can normally see dolphins, but they didn't make an appearance for us. What really made the trip special, though, was Captain Dan himself. He was incredibly knowledgeable, personable, and clearly loves the area. We must have asked him a billion questions about everything under the sun--wildlife, fisheries, the ponies, the islands, local history, the marshes, even county sewage issues -- and he happily answered every one of them in depth. It felt much more like spending a couple of hours exploring Chincoteague with a very knowledgeable local (he's 7th generation on Chincoteague!!) friend than taking a standard tourist boat ride. The two hours flew by, and we came away knowing that we had seen and learned so much more about Chincoteague and Assateague than we ever had before. We can't recommend Captain Dan highly enough. If you're visiting Chincoteague, put this tour on your must-do list!

Great state park! Camping here is fun! The loops at the top of the park are more spacious and…read moresometimes more private. The ones in H loop are really squeezed in and have less space and no privacy. It's hard to book a site, and so frustrating to see empty sites that have been booked but not used. The bathrooms are some of the cleanest camping bathrooms I've ever seen. They're pretty well maintained. The horses do wander free, and you need to be careful with food on your site, as explained by the park rangers. But it's fun to see them and watch them. The camp hosts are good about cleaning and maintaining the area they're each in charge of. The beaches are nice and it's fun to go clamming out in the bay. A very quick drive will take you to Ocean City, to the boardwalk, to go karts, Walmart, Wawa, the movie theater, etc. Lots close by to do if you get caught there on a rainy day. Lovely place to visit.

Assateague is so cool!... Particularly on a breezy day when the flies can't takeoff…read more During a trip to Ocean City, we visited Assateague on the Maryland end. I was so eager to see the horses I heard about, but weary we might not see any. Maybe we were lucky, because we saw sooo many horses! On the road, in the parking lots, in marshes, wandering, grazing, standing on front of cars. So cute! Stop at the visitors center first. Very nice place, helpful information, exhibits, a touch tank, bathrooms, gift shop and then you'll be on your way. Admission per vehicle gets you access for a week. We loved spending a few hours here so much that we came back a second day. The beaches are clean and not crowded. Lots of dogs, so be warned if you're averse. The marsh trail was really cool. We saw several small fishies, pipefish, crabs, egrets, just really cool to look in the water throughout the trail and observe. Bayside beaches are hidden spots for isolated swims. I saw a family here and there just swimming completely alone. The forest trail was also a good one to walk. More interesting nature. We weren't too crazy about the dune trail. Although, it was interesting to see the old abandoned road in the middle of the dune. Horses here there and everywhere, almost. Overall, such a fun place to visit. Go for a few hours or spend the day. Remember, ensure it's breezy and you'll be almost completely fly free.

Apparently being inquisitive in Bob's marina can get you in hot water with the Mean Lady behind the counter. After inquiring about a 16' Carolina Skiff for rent the next day and asking apparently all the wrong questions the Mean Lady suddenly shot her head up and proclaimed "I'm not gonna rent you one of my boats! I know what you're a gonna do with it!" Hmm, for a second there, so did I. Now however, I was going to take the boat into the lower portions of Tom's Cove (Not allowed). Beach the boat and destroy the prop (Also, not allowed), Go clamming (Also, not allowed because duh! you're going to beach the boat and ruin the prop!!!) On top of that I was going to be like other customers who pulled knives out and demanded their (credit card held) $150.00 security deposit be returned. All this after selling me a very nice quality filet knife, discounted 10% for some reason and heavily wrapped in cast plastic, probably to prevent the all to often tourist from going ballistic on the Mean Lady. I'm sure Capt. Bob's Marina is a decent place and everybody has a bad day. I just happened to step in when somebody needed to be called out as a lying, destructive, attempted murderer.

They have anything and everything that you could want or need and always know where the fish are hitting. Yall gotta visit! Our nature obsessed kid wanted to go again as soon as they docked! If you're looking for a fun adventure (not pony watching) then this is the place for you!!!
