Captain Dan took us all around Chincoteague and Assateague, including up into the shallow marshes where the smaller boat could get us wonderfully close to the wildlife and scenery. We saw bald eagles, the Chincoteague ponies, Assateague Lighthouse, and some absolutely beautiful parts of the islands that you just can't appreciate from the road. You can normally see dolphins, but they didn't make an appearance for us. What really made the trip special, though, was Captain Dan himself. He was incredibly knowledgeable, personable, and clearly loves the area. We must have asked him a billion questions about everything under the sun--wildlife, fisheries, the ponies, the islands, local history, the marshes, even county sewage issues -- and he happily answered every one of them in depth. It felt much more like spending a couple of hours exploring Chincoteague with a very knowledgeable local (he's 7th generation on Chincoteague!!) friend than taking a standard tourist boat ride. The two hours flew by, and we came away knowing that we had seen and learned so much more about Chincoteague and Assateague than we ever had before. We can't recommend Captain Dan highly enough. If you're visiting Chincoteague, put this tour on your must-do list!

Then we sped out to the ocean to see the dolphins! The ocean is chopping so hold on!! Again, he found the dolphins near the shore and gave us every angle to get a great picture! On the way back he spotted a young pelican and we stopped to check it out! Yes, you need to take this tour!

Ours tour was chock-a-block full of personal stories from our husband and wife Captain and tour guide duo extraordinaire. Our eye candy consisted of a sting ray enjoying a clam breakfast, flopping around in the shallow waters like a happy kid in the candy shop. It was topped by a crane slurping down an eel then a bald eagle. We spied a few more ponies then made our way around the other side of the island for a full grand tour. My kids went out jet skiing on a guided tour for an hour for about $125. It's for up to 2 people…read moreper jet ski. The driver must be age 18 with a driver's license. Your given a little tutorial before beginning. They left and everything was wonderful. They were having a great time. But when they got to the other side of the island the fear kicked in because the channel has choppy water. My kids aren't avid swimmers, so being out that far in rougher water got the best of them. They sent an employee to guide them back in. My kids were so happy to see land again. Besides the fact that were afraid they still had fun. You do have to understand if you choose to go back it's a 5-15 minute wait for help to arrive depending on where you are. Which could be a little nerve wrecking if your scared. They send a little boat to tow you back. They did have a few issues that day with the battery dying in a few jet skis. But they quickly resolved everything. If you aren't afraid and can swim, I recommend trying this!! Connor and Mike were awesome!!! Check them out!!

He not only got us so close to the ponies, he pointed out bald eagles, the different birds that were flying around. I was amazed at how he could recognize what horse was there by sight. From hundreds of meters away while in the middle of the bay. He also had some fantastic and funny stories about Chincoteague (wait for the Sugar Shack story) what is was like growing up in the area. You can tell he loves his home very much. The pontoons were brand new and stable and very comfortable. It was windy when we went out but I never felt nervous because the pontoon was so sturdy and stable. We got some great photos. And Captain Mike was awesome. I would go again.
