I am a military service related veteran and have a small and well trained service dog. While on a walk I decided to stop in this store planning to spend a couple of hundred dollars locally on souvenirs before leaving the island. So upon entering the store, I wasn't really greeted in a friendly manor. The woman at the counter immediately went into questioning the dogs presence. She implied that the store had so many expensive/ breakable items that she only would allow the dog if I would/ carry him around the store. For which I responded that while I could ... it would of course increase the chance of something being broken by an extra 50%. Honestly, I don't feel the name of the store Ragpickers is appropriate.I briefly saw the items for sale. Basically a souvenir shop. She basically implied that they were an expensive fine arts gallery of fragile pieces. Honestly, the interaction was just unwelcoming and unpleasant. To be fair, I did not immediately announce that it was a service dog but he does have tags. Decide to leave and shop elsewhere. When I had the opportunity, while leaving I did mention it was a service dog and they nearly begged me to come back in. But I just pleasantly declined and decided to move on with my Ocracoke journey. read more

Four stars for friendly and welcoming staff. Four stars for reasonable prices. Unfortunately COVID appears to have had an impact of their clothing inventory. The only T-shirts available were in small and kid sizes. This is not the norm, so we're hopeful this Ocracoke institution will rebound! read more

I LOVE this shop. I live on the island part time and every time I go in I find things I love. I've gotten many pretty, we'll made and very reasonably priced dish towels as gifts, unique candles as gifts, a few treasures for the house, and several of my favorite summer dresses. Sadly, the woman who owned the shop for years - a well liked member of the community - passed away last year. Her family is doing a wonderful job of running the shop in her memory. read more

Okay, so the lady that was working here on the day I checked in was the rudest person ever that I had experienced in a retail store. She ran us out of the store by violently screaming at us for what she said was not keeping our faces covered. I didn't see the mask violation that the store clerk was screaming at us about but this is clearly not the way to behave in public. She is glad that I wasn't in fear for my life or the life of the members of my group for the way she was violently screaming at us. I was prepared if the situation warranted to defend ourselves for the way she was coming at us and very forcefully screaming. read more

This place seems cheesier than what I remember- this goes back 40 years, since I have been coming here since I was a young teen. There were plenty of good gift options, but unless you want a rug, I think "Over the Moon" is a better pick. read more

Awesome store that was truly air-conditioned unlike the others that claimed to be but weren't. This store was filled with neat things that's bound to make you explore around longer than intended. In addition, this store is the most gay-friendly if not the only one in the Ocracoke area. The staff there were really friendly and helpful. Check out the cats hanging outside. Also, be sure to place a pushpin on the map outside to indicate where visitors are from. Cool idea! read more

At first impression we were delighted by the friendly greeting we received upon entering this artsy shop, even tho it was suggested we leave our coffees up front for them to "keep an eye on". Not one to fuss, I completely understand that no one (especially in a seasonal business) wants their goods dripped on by careless patrons. I put my drink on the counter, but when I asked to use a pen the girl behind the counter gave me a short "it's not like anyone is going to take it" comment to which I replied "just nice to make sure I grab the correct one on the way if more are brought in". We browsed for about 3 minutes, but being followed around as if we were going to steal something was too much. I collected my drink and we headed out the door / when my daughter said very nicely "thank you, have a nice day", again the young girl behind the counter had a very sarcastic and rude "thank you & have a nice day" reply, including the ever popular eye roll. We won't be back. The service everywhere was so positive, fun and pleasant, but this place was not. If you can't be nice to the tourists, maybe you're in the wrong business. read more

Was in the store to buy a father's day gift for my grandfather. The store owner and another customer were in a discussion about the intitlment of young people. How they dont work for what they have and how the just expect things. I work very hard for what I have. In fact I work hard enough to be on vacation and to be shopping at a store with my hard earned money. I spent no money here due to the disrespect of the shop workers. read more

We went into the Island Ragpicker two times during our week long camping trip to Ocracoke. The first time the store was busy, we browsed around for a while, spent about $75 and received friendly customer service. After perusing the other island shops during our week long camping trip, we decided to stop back in a second time to purchases a few other things I had seen. The people who later confirmed they were the owners were working this time and the store was empty except for one or two other people. Our experience was so uncomfortable and offensive, I will NEVER shop here again. In short, the owners had their pre-teen/teen daughter aggressively follow us around the store to make sure we weren't shoplifting. She stood about 2-3 feet away from us, refolding already perfectly arranged t-shirts to try to appear busy. She never once said hello, smiled, or more importantly...asked if we needed any help or assistance. She literally got in the way of us shopping and helping our children pick out t-shirts. If you make a child feel uncomfortable, you're not being very discreet. I was so taken aback when I realized that we were being blatantly treated like thieves that I went into another room to see what she would do and sure enough, this girl followed and just stood in the corner staring at me this time. I had wanted to pick out a pair of ear rings from the front counter also but felt so awkward and angry that we just decided to pay for the shirts and get out of there. After walking outside, my husband and I briefly discussed what had just happened and, being business owners ourselves, felt that we would want to know if one of our customers/clients had had such a miserable experience in our establishment. My husband asked the owner to step out onto the front porch to talk (out of respect for them, so that any customers in ear shot didn't overhear). We expressed our frustrations and although the owner apologized, she had the audacity to tell us that if we weren't really shoplifters, that we shouldn't have been so offended about being treated like ones. That's just not how customer service works! I often notice shop owners glancing around their shops to keep an eye on what's happening with patrons, but I've never witnessed or experienced anything like this in my life. Get a video surveillance system if you are that paranoid. A part of me wanted to chalk their behavior up to ignorance-based profiling but, honestly, we are 30 something year old, white, middle class, English speaking, working-professionals who were vacationing with our well-behaved 9 and 11 year old children. There was no reason for us to be treated that way. Island Ragpicker lost out on a bigger sale and many future ones. read more
