NOT PET FRIENDLY AND RUDE- My husband & I have been going to kava bars for 8+ years, taking our service animal kitty, who is harness trained, to each one and have never had a problem. We had been to this location a month ago at night with our cat & were never told she wasn't allowed to be in this kava bar. Today, we returned with our cat & had been hanging out in there for about 20 minutes. She was sitting nicely in a corner while I was getting my SMALL kratom tea, when the manager said that the cat was not allowed to be in there, saying that she was not clean and would spread disease. I asked if dogs were allowed to be in here and he responded saying yes dogs are allowed in here but he just took a class on cats & stated that they spread disease and they're not allowed to be in here. We paid $12 for a SMALL drink, which was extremely overpriced and felt horrible by how this man talked to us. We left nicely and other guests looked at us and apologized saying they have never heard of someone saying that before. We will never be coming back to support this location as well as any of the other locations due to this horrible experience. read more

Great tea room in downtown Melbourne. The Kava is top notch, and the nitro teas are on point. Go see John at the bar. He's super friendly and a great bartender. The bar has a very intimate setting. Nice size lounge area inside and plenty of seating outside too. read more

Great local Kava Bar, I like to visit when in town. Very much enjoy the kavatenders and bar backs. They are so nice. Manager is not very personable. Stayed a several of times for open mic night on Tuesday, it seems the same people playing the same songs. Most patrons stay inside during this time so it gets crowded inside. Would have been nice to stay outside but the music was not the best. I have visited a few other kava bars in the area but Island Root by far is the best. read more

My cousin and I were visiting from out of town and looking for some nightlife. This place seemed very active for a Tuesday night at 10:00. When we came in it was a super chill vibe and kind of a mixed crowd. We sat down to order beers and by some stroke of luck, my cousin asks, "So, what's your specialty?" The bartender described Kava and explained what it is used for in a very helpful and friendly way. We ordered two and then he had us wait to drink them with a few others who had just ordered. It was fun but tasted... like a mud puddle! We then realized that we had happened upon a sober bar!!! They do not sell any alcohol. The Java made my tongue numb and I almost felt mildly stony. Overall a very cool experience and a great bar alternative for anyone sober/recovering or just wanting a break from drunk people. Went here to try Kava for the first time as I was traveling from out of town, did not want to drink and drive (tons of police in Melbourne!), and have always wanted to try Kava. The "bartender" here was very friendly and informative for my first Kava experience. He wanted to make sure I understood the history of the product and that he was serving me something suited to my tastes. It is a social drink that is a fun experience to share with others and they will always have some Kava with you so you don't drink alone. Kava Sutra is also a non-rushed establishment and I got the sense you are free to linger here as long as you want to savor the promised Kava induced relaxation. That said, this was my first time trying Kava and I didn't notice any obvious effect after drinking 3 "shells." My mouth got a little numb but that was short lived. If I had the time to stay longer, the bartender promised that they have stronger versions (with kava concentrate added) that would surely have an effect. I liked it and will go back, although I'm not sure I've really drank the "kool aid" yet on the promised effects of Kava. It's fun though and I enjoyed the newbie experience. read more

Nice vibes. Great atmosphere. The guys working here are very knowledgeable about this stuff. I stopped by on my way back to Fort Lauderdale. I grabbed a kratom tea (white label) that was supposed to help me relax, not to much lol, on the drive back. I like that there is free parking because I'm definitely not used to that (big city problems). This was actually my second time in 2 days visiting. Yeah, that good. The guys here seem pretty cool and if I lived in Melbourne this would probably be a spot I'd visit every few days. I recommend this place. Enjoy guys. read more

These guys are serving up some great Kava! I was on a business trip and stumbled upon this awesome bar. I'm Polynesian so I was curious to see what this Kava Bar had to offer. It was such a great experience! Growing up drinking Kava they're offer a great tasting variety crafted by their creative Kava-ologist Ben. His respect towards the ingredients and Kava show real craftsmanship. The Kava is imported from a variety of Polynesian islands so you're getting close to home for those of us who grew up drinking Kava from the islands. These guys have a genuine love and respect for Kava so that was great to see. Did I mention they serve combucha, coffee, kraftom (which I tried for the first time), and a few other things. Kratom is weak. Would not recommend if you are wanting to feel any effects. Would recommend speakeasy or blue lagoon.

Island Root Kava has a very relaxed vibe, and the bartenders are very friendly and knowledgeable. You aren't rushed at all; you can hang out as long as you like, even if you don't get that many drinks. I would recommend the kava over the kratam tea; I got the promised euphoric/relaxed feeling from the kava, but not the kratam tea. Probably not the place to hang out all day and only buy one drink that's just shy of ten dollars. There is policy to ask customers to leave and the bartenders will get in trouble if they let people stay without continuously purchasing their root juice, its better when paired with an energy drink but not something I crave unless I've been fasting, sub par music for my taste but probably the best place to get stood up at. Great place to chill during late night hours a freind said I should meet up with him here and I didn't regret it. Just start talking to people and you get a very warm welcome. Literally this lounge is unlike anything I ever seen before. It's a kava bar so for those who are tired of alcohol can come here to enjoy a bowl of kava juice. In case you are wondering what Kava is it's root from the Pacific used to make a natural tea which is used to consume to relax and sedate. For about $5 a bowl you can enjoy a non savory tasting drink that gives you a feel good vibe. They try to flavor the drink with fruit flavors but it just doesn't work but regardless drinking a kava is worth the effect. My father actually introduced me to this bar. The feeling is very relaxed and an "all are welcome" type of vibe. Wednesdays are Ladies Drink Free, which is fantastic for everyone. The staff is knowledgeable about Kava and have no problem adjusting the strength of the shot based on your experience. It can be a bit of a grainy type of taste (since you are drinking a smashed up root), but there are different varieties and flavored combinations (such as fruit punch). Been here a couple of times, fairly expensive however very relaxed atmosphere. Went tonight because I had a friend who needed something to relax them and went with my son, being as typically we sit outside. Went in and ordered and not once did anyone say one word to me about him being there, hell they even offered him candy, had they said something, we'd have left and been ok with it. We even sat there talking to the owner. STILL NOTHING SAID! However nothing was said until we went outside and friend and boyfriend had gone back in to reorder and they were told that children couldn't be in the establishment as they treat it like a regular bar, even though no alcoholic beverages are sold there. They were also told by the server that she didn't want to embarrass us by telling us we couldn't be there with my son. Also she said that people come there to get away from their kids, well this is a sad fact as they are only young once and they probably should enjoy them while they are still young. Just my opinion. I've worked retail and have been an actual bartender, and when people are bringing things or people in that are not allowed, you tell them up front and give them the option to leave. I feel the way this was taken care of was very unprofessional and probably will never return to this establishment due to the fact the server couldn't even have told me, the mother and the driver, as I have left and respected the fact that they were upfront with us. Prior to this experience, I'd have given them 4 stars, only because it is fairly expensive, 3 drinks and a Coke $32 and the fact they allow people to steal the chairs from the other tables outside and even though the table is empty, there are no chairs to go with it. THIS IS NOT A CHILD FRIENDLY PLACE, so do not bring your child with you, being a single mother I don't have much of a choice but to bring him. read more
